(I'm a fan of the product. The world needs more Twitter filtering.)
Hedge funds charge high fees, but a subset of them provide a product you can't get anywhere else: returns orthogonal to other investments. Sophisticated investors pay happily for it. What's being stolen?
And the project was for the Bitly API Contest, so I figured I'd just look at bitly links and leave it at that.
One thing I'd like to add to the site is automatic categorization of links, like on Google News. If anyone has suggestions on how to accomplish that, please comment.
I'm also struggling with intermittent 502 proxy errors on the server where Apache has problems proxying to news.arc on localhost.
I use a custom filtering script and a long list of regexes I've accumulated over time, expressions like this:
\b#?NFL|NBA|NHL|World Cup|Yankees|Jets|Pats|Redskins|49ers|Steelers|Ravens|Packers|Reds|Phillies|Patriots|\ Seahawks)\b
Another filter that comes in handy is not('http://). Some Twitterers out there share good links, and that's all.
The site is still building critical mass, but most of the current users are experienced quants & HF traders. (Disclaimer: I launched the site)
It's fascinating how an Occam's Razor-type force pervades successful web design.
It seems unlikely that anyone would get utility out of risk itself, independently of the reward. But many people, given the choice of two scenarios with equal risk/reward ratios, tend to choose the scenario with the higher risk numerator. "Bet big or go home".
