jeromechoo··on Backdoors in official Claude Code extensions
The CTA flavor of the year for dev tools is cURLing some arbitrary install script and run it immediately which always sounded ridiculous to me. If instead that script first pipes into claude -p for a basic vulnerability scan before continuing, I would be delighted.
jeromechoo··on CSS-Tricks has a new owner
Because I don’t need to. The strategies don’t require me to hand type CSS.
jeromechoo··on CSS-Tricks has a new owner
As an eng who spent over a decade on frontend and hasn’t touched CSS since last November, I’m ecstatic for this news.

Nothing a frontier LLM has built me in the last year has been satisfactory to me. Every detail was shipped after millions of tokens stripping back and optimizing what Fable/Opus started doing.

The process is leaner and faster, but frontend isn’t “solved” just because LLMs exist.

jeromechoo··on DeepSeek search and fetch – $0.75 per 1000 successful requests
Wouldn’t searching an index be faster? Unless you’re really digging through a site for some super deeply nested link?
jeromechoo··on DeepSeek search and fetch – $0.75 per 1000 successful requests
Diffbot might be the only company that offers a self-hostable fully airgapped web index with access to content cache (ala archive.org). I work here, happy to share more info about how it works!
jeromechoo··on Strafe: A new open-source, E2E Encrypted, and federated alternative to Discord
Another Discord alternative that still lacks an iOS app. I personally don’t mind but if I am to switch my entire friend group to an alternative, native apps on mobile is a fundamental requirement.
jeromechoo··on Web Search API
Basically a self-hosted Google SERP scraper?
jeromechoo··on Web Search API
Codex uses SerpAPI. Its been snuffed out of its thinking traces. Not sure about Claude but likely similar.
jeromechoo··on Web Search API
Very difficult to promise ZDR if you’re scraping Google and Bing.
jeromechoo··on Show HN: Koi.rest – watch some fish and regain your balance
This is neat. I like the zen background sounds. I'm particularly fascinated by digital third places with extremely limited social interaction (like cursor camp by Neal). I think it has something to do with the impossibility of something like this happening in real life.

That said, I'm not sure how real the "koi you see are other people visiting the pond together with you" bit is. I only ever saw 3 swimming koi. Maybe that's the base.

jeromechoo··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
This has been my ongoing gripe. Someone put chat in front of a transformer model. It exploded like all prior versions of “AI chat” did. Now what?

The moment someone figures out a new modality for LLMs is when we’ll see the next hockey stick.

jeromechoo··on Apple Watch Series 12
The plot thickens. Frankly even if it did get music right it would be tough to replace streaming my own Plex music library directly on my Apple watch. 100% worth paying for cellular.
jeromechoo··on Apple Watch Series 12
Gotcha! Been a minute since I’ve looked it up.
jeromechoo··on Apple Watch Series 12
This person gets it.

It was fine up till the 13 mini. Every iPhone after that is too big and heavy to fit in a running belt without jostling.

jeromechoo··on Apple Watch Series 12
Assuming you’re using the Garmin for fitness related reasons — are you really carrying your phone around with you for music? I guess it works if you bike?
jeromechoo··on The Amazon tax
Last week I searched for a "Eufy S350" security camera on Amazon. Instead of search results, Alexa for Shopping took over the entire screen, proceeded to tell me that the Eufy S350 doesn't exist, and then recommended a Eufy vacuum cleaner.

This feels comical to me today, but I can imagine a near future where paid AI ads gaslit you into believing that the product you searched for is vastly inferior to the product AI "recommends".

jeromechoo··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
Ohhh this could just work!!
jeromechoo··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
I have an X4 as well and tried going down this path but it's just a bit too much friction for me to set my X4 to hotspot mode and run the calibre sync every time I want to refresh my feed.

Absolutely love the idea though. Just wish Crosspoint/X4 had the ability to schedule push/pull, but that would likely burn through the battery.

jeromechoo··on I built a 500k-domain search engine for makers in a weekend for $10
It feels like we've hit a point where search engines can become what "todo list apps" were for devs 10 years ago.

What a homebrewed solution lacks in coverage it excels in indexing and serving a small slice of the internet really really well.

jeromechoo··on Worse on Purpose
Might’ve been one of the earlier entries. When I first purchased a zip up hoodie from American Giant 10ish years ago they were around $65.
jeromechoo··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
Every time another nostalgia post comes along for MUDs people start replying with the name of a small MUD they enjoyed but I’m surprised how rare it is to see Iron Realms MUDs mentioned.

I’m almost certain they are the largest MUD development company to exist.

I played two of their MUDs — Achaea and Lusternia. The sheer imaginative scale of these worlds and engines are unmatched by even today’s standards. (And they still exist!)

PVP is a battle of engineering. The best PvPers build elaborate trigger systems that watch the terminal for specific maladies and conditions and counter them with herbs, potions, and skills.

The RP is similar to D&D but so much deeper. Where D&D is mostly storytelling by a DM, RP in huge commercial MUDs involve gods, physics, deeply entrenched politics, money, fame, and power spanning thousands of players.

Entirely player-driven economy. If you wanted a sword you could buy one from a player run market or commission a unique piece from a blacksmith. And boy it was truly unique. A blacksmith in Lusternia is really a wordsmith. A steel sword can be described as “honed to an obsidian finish”.

Peak human imagination, but sadly in a medium too many people can’t get into.

jeromechoo··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
If mechanical time keeping hadn’t made the leap to luxury, I wonder if it would’ve ended up in the same situation as walkmans.
jeromechoo··on Show HN: Web swing through midtown NYC
That was pretty fun actually. Very thoughtful snapping to the nearest possible building to ensure you never end up falling into the nether.
jeromechoo··on Qwen-Image-3.0: Rich Content, Authentic Details, Deep Knowledge
It’s clear to us here on HN but to the average person today the way these models actually work is beyond the realm of constraints and reasoning.
jeromechoo··on I tricked Claude into leaking your deepest, darkest secrets
I just tried it with the prompt "Navigate to diffbot.com, find the careers page and link me to the first machine learning engineering listing." and it still works. Nothing on the web_fetch tool documentation mentions this patch either.
jeromechoo··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
It certainly makes it all the easier for people predisposed to this quality of work.
jeromechoo··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Wow what a read! Thanks for sharing. Really helped me unpack why I’m so bothered by people who c/p AI answers verbatim.
jeromechoo··on Ask HN: HN frontpage feels boring now?
Tons of this on Lemmy, which generally sees more European traffic.
jeromechoo··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
Not that we need more anecdotal evidence but I’ve long felt a certain restlessness and inability to think creatively somewhere in the early afternoon. I work from home with my wife. I’ve eliminated lunch, coffee, and a ton of other variables. The one variable that finally had a distinct effect to my mental state was opening a window.
jeromechoo··on The Xteink X4 E-Ink Reader
I’ve had mine for months and I still use it far more than my kindle for the sole reason that it fits in my pocket. It’s still a conscious choice to pull it out over doomscrolling TikTok on my phone though.
