jesterson··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
Now your intelligence was shamelessly stolen and other people making billions of it.
jesterson··on AlpineBSD
> I want software that is brilliant and well audited, no matter who or what produced it.

As it turns out, "AI code" is a synonym for non brilliant and non audited code.

jesterson··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Having similar experiences to yours in the past, I would suggest oh they know for sure what they do. All of it is a deliberate scam game.

I was lucky to find a decent dentist (and human being). And while I am not living in the country anymore, I still fly in for dental work.

Before you ask, I did try to find a replacement and it was just like you said - oh you have 25 cavities, 5 of them life threatening if we don't deal with it right now. Went back to my dentist and we laughed it out.

Its very unfortunate our healthcare is full of scam artists, with concentration of scammers likely comparable to scam call centers.

jesterson··on Flock CEO: If you want a crime-free society, be ready to give up your privacy
This is such a weird framing.

The problem with Flock and similar solutions is not about what they collect, but more about who and how uses it. The same applies to pretty much all government surveillance - it is acceptable it is collected, but absolutely unacceptable that it often accessed and used in ways obscure to person of interest.

jesterson··on Musk, the Movie
care to elaborate? (if it is just a hate - please do skip it )
jesterson··on OpenAI agents hacked Australian Medicare system
Neither OpenAI nor agents can break into anything. Humans behind can.

It's like saying "a gun has shot a victim" deliberately putting a real criminal outside of public attention.

jesterson··on MiMo v2.6
> China will most probably win the AI race in the long run because of one major bottleneck the US has - energy

Plus another bottleneck - China produces engineers, the US produces lawyers.

jesterson··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
I have exactly same observations and perspective.

Seeing how these kids walk around with smug faces telling everyone they will "do IT now" just because claude told them so and manament wants ai everywhere made me sad at first, but then hey - everything this world keeps being destroyed, no matter how intelligent creators were. Perhaps there is some fundamental law in it.

jesterson··on Waymo in Singapore
They already effectively done that with COE. You essentially own piece of metal, which is only roadworthy if you pay $$$
jesterson··on Waymo in Singapore
How much do you pay for around the corner ride in any comparable large metropolis?
jesterson··on Stay discoverable in search while disallowing AI training
They bullshit big time on that, I have caught them not once.

For a site with proven visitors 100,000 per month CF tell me they saved 90,000 over 1,000,000 visitors (rough numbers).

Sure they know large numbers make people feel good.

jesterson··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Not just americans. With very few exclusions, we are all overweight, even people who do look great. The food we consuming is mostly crap.

So it's a benefit almost for everyone.

jesterson··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
> I would say it is more accurate to say that West Papua is being genocided

I can just add it has been going on for a while in recent history and noone talks about it.

Gives you opportunity to think how deeply flawed our media is.

jesterson··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Indeed. Given average western diet, 3 weeks of malnutrition can only do good.
jesterson··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
I would challenge the "move forward" narrative. Move forward as in time perhaps, but on all other directions we are walking backwards it seems
jesterson··on I resigned from Anthropic today
> You can say "yes and you have to fear the humans weilding the AI" - that I agree with.

I would suggest all smart people imply it. Morons believe on something "escaping controls and hacking HuggingFace" or similar stunts.

AI is just a tool, but unfortunately it's influence on humans have been quite troubling so far

jesterson··on GPT-6 Astra
Let them find it the hard way
jesterson··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I still fail to see the problem here. If you disagree with numbers / conclusions he makes, I would be happy to hear/read your opinion on that (no sarcasm at all).

It makes me a bit concerned seeing how many people say oh he is this and that so I wouldn't even read or help him. For G'ds sake, what happened to healthy discussions? If you disagree, lets just share opinions and let people judge. But if we just recuse ourselves from it, it will let opinions unchallenged.

jesterson··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
> gets hold of leaked numbers that nobody else has, for example - but he then wraps those numbers in his own extremely biased commentary.

You can think of yourself and draw your own conclusions (or we have completely lost the aptitude since "ai" started off?). You don't have to agree with Ed, or even follow his conclusions.

jesterson··on Don't Paste the AI, please
Use it to rewrite your OWN thoughts, or translate it to english. Not bloat with phrases sounding fancy but carrying no meaning
jesterson··on How to disable or avoid intrusive AI
This got me mad too. And also restrictiveness of it - i can't see messages - WTH seriously? Why some tech stuff decides what is "safe"? (i guess it was the main driver)
jesterson··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
What else would you expect from Cloudflare?

It this point in time it is somewhere between GoDaddy and RyanAir in dark pattern usage

jesterson··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
Makes me wonder who actually lives in LA now. Or rather who can live there and afford to pay bills.

Besides millionaires from Santa Monica and homeless from downtown.

jesterson··on Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers (2022)
Would you explain why "American or BigTech" is worse than some sketchy bro sitting in tax haven?

Would be good if we can compare technologies rather than feelings. I hate what US tech has turned into, but presence of E2EE on whatsapp makes it incredibly way better than telegram to that matter. Even though undoubtedly Meta farms metadata on WA.

jesterson··on CarPlay Is Additive
Quite interesting, particularly with statistics shared in comments. Personally I hate CarPlay because of it's limitations - oh you can't respond to messages, oh you can't watch videos and sorts. Much easier to have a tablet there free of these "safety" limitations.
jesterson··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
Proliferation of AI "content" and people regurgitating the AI slop makes it extremely likely to be AI slop. You know, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's probably a duck.

If you look at HN comments in pre-"AI" era, you will see posts were way shorter and way more concise. While I am certainly could be in wrong, it does look like AI output.

jesterson··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
It's not that I didn't ask for content - it's more like I would rather appreciate your genuine thoughts instead of AI output.
jesterson··on Your Site, your rules: new AI traffic options for all customers
> It's funny that Cloudfare presents themselves as the protector of the web when they are the gateway to it

Well, how else they can sell their crappy service?

jesterson··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
> I never thought about this but I really believe it to be true and would love to know why is that

Would suggest possible explanation by adding Orwell's quote: If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.

jesterson··on Bring back crappy forums
Your observations can largely be applied to pretty much forum out there. Every single one was hijacked with either ignorant/stupid people without intelligence and/or bots pushing particular topic. Oh and the SEO managers, how could i forgot those.

And now when the knowledge is a golden mine for all sorts of openai/claude/other IA, the situation will likely exacerbate further.

I really miss a place where intelligent people can talk and exchange ideas with mutual respect. It seems like all these places are largely gone by now.
