jezzamon··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
Red and blue is so obvious for girls and boys, so I really wonder what made someone deviate from that??
jezzamon··on Digital minimalism
You are right but I would use a different tone for what you're describing. E.g. I've seen a lot more antisemitism and full-blown racism on Twitter than I did in the past.
jezzamon··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth (2008)
Disclaimer: work for Google

This article is not as pure as it might seem but I think this is also a post-hoc reasoning to explain what decision they went with for the "Persian Gulf" / "Arabian Gulf" decision, and Google then proceeded to change their stance on that in the following years:

"Google had previously put both Persian Gulf and Arabian Gulf on its Google Maps. After May 2012, it removed both names from the body of water stating that it does not name every place in the world and that it did not want to take a political stance. Iranians complained about the change and started a Twitter campaign asking "Where's the Persian Gulf?".[66] Since 2016, Google Maps has displayed both Persian Gulf and Arabian Gulf on the body of water and shows "either Arabian or Persian Gulf to local users, depending on geolocation and language settings."[67] Google Earth shows both names, unless viewed through a server from a Gulf Coast Arab country, in which case it labels it simply "Arabian Gulf"." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Gulf_naming_dispute#:~...

Evidently Google in bending the knee with the America naming but I think they also haven't exactly taken a purely principled stance in the past either

jezzamon··on How accurately calibrated is Jev?
Jev should ideally respond in a non-random way, it should just list out the probabilities.

I suppose trying to interface with the model like this is like asking an LLM how many times the letter E appears in a word - just not the correct way to ask that given its model

jezzamon··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Yeah I think you're right.
jezzamon··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Discussed a lot here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49893653

Seems to be more reasonable than this title suggests?

Some comments: "So they have introduced a major change and said any older Chromebooks bought going forward will only get 8. So its not a retrospective reduction for existing customers." (Edit: actually I think this comment is wrong, if you bought a Chromebook 1 year ago, you'd only get 9 years of ChromeOS updates)

"From my understanding of the article, it sounds like ChromeOS support is getting pared back for those devices, but the devices themselves should still be supported, albeit via a (planned but not yet in existence) migration path to GooglebookOS."

You have to accept the best offer you get, if there's someone that you would like, you only match with them if all their better options are exhausted.

Perhaps it's more of an acquired taste, but there are definitely modern games that intentionally try to replicate that old style of 3D graphics. There are even things like animations on YouTube that aim for it as a stylistic choice.

I'm guessing young folk have more nostalgia for this type of thing

jezzamon··on Claude, change the "Add to Cart" button to blue
Funny game.

Do people really prompt AI like this? Multiple times the choice was either to yell at the agent, or ask it why it did something, neither of which are very fruitful lines to go down if you know what you're doing

jezzamon··on Google Antigravity introduces Boost deep reasoning (/boost)
It's because they did a very bad rollout with 2.0 which totally removed the editor, which frustrated a lot of people, so then they added all these ways to install the version with the editor again to try to fix that.

Their attention is definitely focused on the non IDE tool

jezzamon··on Google Antigravity introduces Boost deep reasoning (/boost)
Not sure if it solves your problem, but there's a command line tool for Antigravity
jezzamon··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
The lack of barrier to entry is the problem. That barrier is highly desirable in this context (for better or worse)
jezzamon··on Australia Bans Generative A.I. From Official Music Charts
This has to be a generally popular action... Surprised there's some people against it on hacker news but we are a slanted set of the population.
jezzamon··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
FWIW you should clarify: do you mean mentally unstable people on streets, or do you mean any form of homelessness (living in cars, surfing on friends couch, etc). Because that second category is much larger and includes a lot of sincere people who are basically just priced out of the area that grew up in
jezzamon··on 4 in 10 travellers visit tourist sites to capture social media content
The article's headline has a bit of a slant:

"Nearly four in ten respondents, 39%, admit they have visited a tourist site mainly to take a photo or video."

... That doesn't mean that it's just for social media

jezzamon··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
A lot of people, especially left leaning and young people, are very against any AI use and especially for AI pictures or video. For them it's very cringe-worthy. So that would all need to change somehow.

Remember that a lot of the people driving opinions on stuff are the artists that would be displaced by this technology.

Also... Actors aren't hired based on acting skill. AI can't replace the notoriety part of why studios hire actors.

jezzamon··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
You ideally need a directed graph where descendants can have multiple parents (which JJ supports). If you can't, then the linear tree is just as good I think.

Say you do change A, add a protocol buffer API definition, then implement the server logic (B) and the front end code (C) so that both depend on A but not each other. That can be in a tree. But now you want to add an integration test (D) that depends on B and C. The tree doesn't help you there, and you were better off making it a linear chain by arbitrarily picking one of B or C to be dependant on the other so that you have a code state with all of A,B and C applied to create D on top of.

jezzamon··on Datacentres drive up big tech's carbon emissions to a third of those of France
I think most ways of obtaining carbon neutrality are a little bit BS, that's why.

An alternative is what Google is theoretically aiming for: being carbon-free. But they've already started using language describing it as a moonshot or idealistic goal so seems likely they'll abandon that

jezzamon··on Solving Wordle using information theory
I thought this was old news? I remember people making videos about using information theory to solve Wordle back when it was particularly hyped. (After writing this I checked, there's even a 3 blue 1 brown video on this)

My favourite along those lines was solving wordle in 1 guess using the distribution of coloured squares on social media https://www.kaggle.com/code/benhamner/wordle-1-6

jezzamon··on Anti-social: It's fads, not friends, which now dominate social media feeds
We used to call them social networking sites, now they're social media sites.

But I think the problem is that people don't contribute very much too them, so if none of your friends are sharing things that interest you then the media part has to come in as a fallback
