jipumarino··on Finding North America’s lost medieval city
You mean 1491, by Charles C. Mann? Good starting point for this subject.
jipumarino··on What caffeine does to your brain
Is it possible to approximate the amount of caffeine based on the beans weight I use for brewing? Before I take any further steps I'd like to know how close to the danger zone I am.
jipumarino··on Superheroes a 'cultural catastrophe', says comics guru Alan Moore (2014)
Do you really not consider that an act of violence?
jipumarino··on Mathematicians Are Hoarding a Type of Japanese Chalk
I taught with blackboard and chalk at a university and then at a high school for 9 years. I'm allergic and hated the chalk with a burning passion.
jipumarino··on How the THX Deep Note Creator Remade His Iconic Sound
I have one of the more obscure iPhone ringtones as my alarm. My wife was trying new ringtones yesterday and when she tried the one I have as alarm I literally shuddered.
jipumarino··on A cross-browser offline-enabled web compass
In my iPhone 5, it seems to point exactly in the opposite direction. The included Compass app works perfectly. I don't know if this matters or not, but I'm in South America.
jipumarino··on Swift Performance: Too Slow for Production
I haven't tried Swift yet, so I'm posting this just to know what other experiences people have.
jipumarino··on Ask HN: What small webapps do you know that have a large audience?
http://escaladenotas.cl

300K users per month, 600K in June and November, mainly Chilean teachers.

jipumarino··on Is Borges the 20th Century’s most important writer?
Portuguese writer José Saramago
jipumarino··on Moving Atom to React
It gets better every time I try again, but I'm still missing four things:

- Good project management. I tried the project-manager plugin, but it doesn't seem to remember my fuzzy finder options and reindexes everything every time.

- Good Vim emulation, like Vintageous in Sublime.

- Keyboard mapping override. I use cmd-j and cmd-k for switching tabs in Sublime. I cannot map this easily in Atom.

- Actually, I disabled tabs in Sublime and only use the side bar. I miss this in Atom too.

jipumarino··on Apple to Cease Development of Aperture and Transition Users to Photos for OS X
> Even GarageBand lost features, you could use plugins before.

Just to clarify, this is not the case: you can still use Audio Units as always.

jipumarino··on Reeder 2 for Mac Public Beta
I've been using ReadKit (http://readkitapp.com) for a while. It's very similar to Reeder, it supports a lot of services for syncing and works flawlessly. As a long time Reeder user in Mac and iPhone, I'll be giving it another chance, though.
jipumarino··on Why You Shouldn't Interrupt a Programmer
I got a 503 error and for a moment I thought it was very insightful.
jipumarino··on US-East AWS Connectivity Issues
I got into one of our machines that presented the connectivity issues from another one which was still reachable. It had no external (curl www.google.com) connectivity. Just two minutes ago it started resolving again.
jipumarino··on What did Edward Snowden get wrong? Everything
> I wish I could tell people the amazing things I witnessed during my 30 years in the CIA, that I've never seen people work harder or more selflessly, that for little money and long hours, people took it for granted that their flaws would be scrutinized and their successes ignored.

30 years? Then those flaws include helping overthrow a democratically elected government in my country, among many others. That's a kind of flaw that needs to be scrutinized and prevented at any cost.

jipumarino··on Project Cybersyn, a 1971-73 Chilean Experiment in Computer-Assisted Economy
As an aside, I can recommend the alternate history novel Synco, from author Jorge Baradit, based on the Cybersyn project. http://www.amazon.com/Synco-Jorge-Baradit/dp/9563040562
jipumarino··on New Arduino released: the 32bit Due
How does this compare to the Teensy 3.0?
jipumarino··on Live coding (music) with Emacs Live
Another similar project, SuperCollider: http://supercollider.sourceforge.net

And if you're on a Mac, Impromptu: http://impromptu.moso.com.au

jipumarino··on Prince of Persia source code released (Apple II assembly)
Jordan, regarding the PC version, 01/26/1990:

This is going to be the definitive version of Prince of Persia. With VGA and a sound card, on a fast machine, it'll blow the Apple away. (In contrast, none of the Karateka conversions was as good as the Apple original)

jipumarino··on Poll: What's Your Most Disliked Programming Language?
AppleScript
jipumarino··on Skype sign-in down
I can login now.
jipumarino··on Skype sign-in down
They seem to acknowledge that there is problem: http://twitter.com/Skype
jipumarino··on How I Indexed The Daily (HTTP proxying using Charles for Mac)
Depending on your specific requirements, I recommend HTTP Scoop (http://www.tuffcode.com/) for Mac OS X ($15). Not as feature packed, but it's been more than enough for my needs. It also does not require one to change the global network settings.
jipumarino··on [dead]
C# would be Mormonism - At first glance, it's the same as Java, but at a closer look you realize that it's controlled by a single corporation…

Oh, wait.

jipumarino··on The cheapest synthesizer you can ever build
Schematics. Now! ;)
jipumarino··on Science Misconceptions in Textbooks and Popular culture
I wish the site was just a little easier to navigate…
jipumarino··on The Facebook API: A Case Study in Not Caring About Developers
I'm utterly astonished that there is no way of getting a full list of fans of my own page. FQL? No. Graph API? No. REST API? No. Screen scraping? No! If you have more than 10000 fans, then not even the web displays them (page 100 = page 101 = page 102...)
