jmalkin··on Notre-Dame came closer to collapsing than people knew
Yeah this is gorgeous

I wonder how much it costs them compared to a regular article

jmalkin··on Highlights from Facebook’s Libra Senate hearing
Is it unusual or unheard of for a senate hearing to be held into an unreleased product?
jmalkin··on How to Find Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb
Whoops hugged the site to death
jmalkin··on Slack Wants to Replace Email. Is That What We Want?
For me, Slack is good because it adds fun to the workplace, especially in one too big to chat to all these far flung people

You get to know people you work with before you even met them in person

And you swap gifs and jokes. It just helps built a positive culture I think

jmalkin··on Facebook Cryptocurrency Plan Faces Opposition in France
An article I read claimed exactly that, saying that the real money sitting in a bank would also be used for generating interest to pay back initial investors

Can't find the source but it was reliable, Techcrunch or the New York Times I think

jmalkin··on [dead]
That's a lot of editorializing in the title there.
jmalkin··on People care more about privacy than they think
Yeah this is not the same at all.

That one phone exchange operator couldn't make hundreds of billions of dollars by selling access to the information for advertising for example.

When I think about the privacy I value, it's more like I don't want to be manipulated and have a soulless corporation benefiting from my private life.

Small town gossip and eavesdropping is human and harmless, but I'd be pissed off at phone lady too.

Maybe the townsfolk weren't because they knew her and she was harmless or not creepy or something.

jmalkin··on People care more about privacy than they think
I hope privacy becomes a core thing people care about, as much as having a right to free speech.

It already is a bit but it isn't quite mainstream enough.

It's more like a nerds concern, but it should be everyone's.

Maybe because free speech is guaranteed by the Constitution but not privacy.

jmalkin··on The CIA Spied on People Through Their Smart TVs, Leaked Documents Reveal (2017)
I've gotten nothing out of my Smart TV that I couldn't have gotten from a Chromecast, or preferably, a laptop hooked up to a TV.

And I've lost a lot. My TV is slow. When I try to control the volume, sometimes I have to wait multiple seconds.

And things stop working all the time and require a reboot.

I hate the damn thing. It even comes with bloatware for some reason, games I'll never play that it insists on updating forever.

And with the privacy concerns on top of all that, I wish I had a dumb TV.

My shit cube TV from the 90s was better!

jmalkin··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
Concerned about his this will impact their sales. We are easily seduced by pretty screens, and overestimate our driving ability with gadgets on hand
jmalkin··on Magic mushrooms should be decriminalised
I believe it's Portugal that has very successfully triaged decriminalisation of many or all drugs
jmalkin··on The difference a dad can make
Lovely story. My parents' approach to learning and what was acceptable and not had a very big effect on my choices in life
jmalkin··on Gimp 2.10.12
I think UX issues, without data backing them up, are just opinions for the most part. I don't feel very comfortable putting them in a bug tracker.

I wonder if they have UX trained people doing research and so on.

jmalkin··on Facebook’s New Cryptocurrency Gets Big Backers
Facebook's equivalent of Google pay on the sense of data gathering?
jmalkin··on Game Builder: Create 3D games with friends, no experience required
Looks amazing!!

I wonder how well it will cope with non-basic games, as in non-platformers, non-shooters.

I've noticed that many frameworks are great for basic tutorial project usage but don't do well once you start on a real project

jmalkin··on How to Design for the Web in 2019
Is it ironic that this is on medium, which is a great example of how not to design for the web?
jmalkin··on How to Design for the Web in 2019
Apps do a huge amount of tracking too, and they have their own dark patterns, like making things really addicting

What's more is apps exist in their walled gardens far more than websites, even if the web has been getting worse in that regard

jmalkin··on Gimp 2.10.12
Have not tried Paint Shop Pro since the 00's!! Maybe I'll try it again
jmalkin··on Gimp 2.10.12
This wasn't the place to list all my specific complaints, so I didn't
jmalkin··on Gimp 2.10.12
I love gimp, love that it's free, but I really wish they paid a little more attention to the usability

There's all these minor issues that get on your nerves

If it was just a bit more user friendly, I would not need Photoshop
