A Navy fact sheet on what it calls 'non-lethal optical distractors' reads:

Non-lethal optical distracters are visible laser devices that have reversible optical effects on human targets. These types of non-blinding laser devices use highly directional optical energy to support several non-lethal capabilities, including:

jngreenlee··on FDA grants emergency use authorization for 5-13 minute Covid-19 test
I would like this, especially for tests (I understand being more restrictive for treatment but still disagree with the winner take all corpratism that results under current regime)
jngreenlee··on FDA grants emergency use authorization for 5-13 minute Covid-19 test
I think you reacted too strongly, IMO. I only said some. People and their doctors are the MOST concerned with their lives...not you, not politicians, and not FDA staffers.

If I want to treat my (illegal war) PTSD, depression or anxiety with novel treatments like 2CB, LSD, or MDMA, that is my choice. It immoral to restrict my supply with the barrel of a gun.

jngreenlee··on FDA grants emergency use authorization for 5-13 minute Covid-19 test
I personally hope this shows (some) irrelevance of FDA bureaucracy...if they weren't need in the worst of times, why are they needed in the best of times?

Let entrepreneurs, doctors, and patients decide their individual risk level. I would rather have more options than less.

Edit: as an alternative to any knee jerk critism (I said "some"), why can't states handle this and the best emerge? I'm a big proponent of localism.

Also libertarian minded....have you considered that in a natural state, businesses this large would be very hard to maintain? The fundamental business structure we have today is based around a government-sanctioned "personhood".

If you could strip this away, there would be no corporate veil, and you could sue the person who failed to act (or whom acted wrongly) and did you wrong. Think of bankers at Wells Fargo creating false accounts in customer names...hire investigator or do your own, sue, discover, repeat...there would be MUCH MORE downside to bad behavior, even if the upside is there.

I think personally that organizations like GORE would exist, and who knows what else might emerge...more co-ops?

Of course this does require 3rd-party alternate court systems (maybe like cert issuers, but held to the same liability standard above?)...our current system cannot handle this, so it may be largely academic thoughts.

jngreenlee··on Illinois governor signs law capping insulin costs at $100 per month
Wouldn't it be much more meaningful for the Sate of Illinois to say they will buy a State-managed insulin supply, for which they will guarantee access by State residents at $x/Month?

Easy to make something unallowed on paper. Much harder, and more meaningful, with Skin in the Game, to actually go out and do what they may think their rules will accomplish.

jngreenlee··on U.S. Opposed Breast-Feeding Resolution at World Health Assembly (2018)
Wait, why is this old article even a thing? It's a resolution being drafted by technocrats far away from "real people".

While everyone else here is debating corporate influence, what about the epistemology of the issue itself...why does an inter-governmental organization need such a resolution, and "who the fork cares"?

People across the globe know breast feeding works, and they don't learn that from the UN or any other government. They learn it from their tribe, family, friends, internet, books. It's also intuitively best...AKA its been around for millions of years and we all know that.

People should be upset that time and money was spent on this....someone tell me if I missed some vital thing like "non-compliant governments will be replaced by IMF officials", or "North Korea to ban boobs"?

OMG yes...I flyed United occasionally when SW doesn't makes sense for the route. I was even status matched to "Premier Platinum" for a while. I was amazed that 1. I didn't get upgrades due to the remaining levels above me, and 2. Just how long boarding is and how many special groups. Can't see the business value there.
jngreenlee··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
Not at current load ratios. Most flights are full. Good business environment and MAXes out of service are causing this. Your best bet might be the stranded 2-seat exit row on -800s.

But better to assume you'll have a middle seater. If you stay calm it will be okay.

jngreenlee··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
>act as greedily as possible so it takes longer than it needs to

These two things aren't connected (greed and time blocking alsie). the greedy answer is to get comfortable and settled in your bubble, fast.

I am a SW FF, most of the other people on my planes are, and we get it...we move and seat quickly to allow others in. I'm guessing far better average plane etiquette than most other US airline's FFs (though all FFs are likely above average).

Yes a Department of the Navy, but it's by far the "Men's Department". (Said in an old school way that's not really appropriate these days)
