joeblau··on Show HN: Petal, open-source CoScreen/ScreenHero finally free
Thanks for making this. We used co-screen so much that when you shut down, we had to build our own.
joeblau··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
We used this in 2011 at the startup I worked for. 20 positive and 20 negative words was good enough to sell Twitter "sentiment analysis" to companies like Apple, Bentley, etc...
joeblau··on Meat and mental health: Meat eaters suffer less depression, anxiety
I’m just here for the confirmation bias, but seriously as others have noted this study was funded by an organization that benefits from this headline being true.
joeblau··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
Is there a non-Facebook link to this please?
joeblau··on Apple, US developers agree to App Store updates
I've been an iOS developer since 2009 and after reading this, it felt like Prime Day; A bunch of stuff, but nothing I wanted.
joeblau··on Employee shortages: Where have all the workers gone?
Just a side note. I’m actually working on building a remote team and when I went to your profile, the link in there was dead. How do people casually browsing your profile discover what you’ve worked on and learn more about you?
joeblau··on Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees
You're a true 10x developer.
joeblau··on Sorry everybody, I failed with you
I sold the site to Toptal 2 years ago, but trust me I had donate buttons, crypto donate buttons, I messaged multiple big tech firms that used my project to ask for sponsorships, I ran ads using carbon. I tried a lot of things over the 7 years of running it and lots of the avenues failed or didn't generate enough revenue.

Now I understand that the project was not that valuable but it would have been nice if I could have run it as a lifestyle business.

joeblau··on Sorry everybody, I failed with you
I’ve seen few OSS burn out posts lately. I created gitignore.io and I’m thankful it wasn’t that successful because even the 5 hours a month I put in didn’t yield much financial compensation.

There should really be a more transparent way that projects like this, canihazip, gitignore, redis, and a bunch of other projects can be sustainably run.

joeblau··on Bitcoin is failing at becoming the future of money
Look at this batch of function handlers[1]. Why does it have functions named "Deal Hand" "Fold" "Call" "Leave Table" etc... ?

This thing was clearly a poker game that was co-opted by a ton of narrative changes into what it is now. I'm not saying that the co-opting and narrative changes are bad because I think the underlying function of trestles digital uniqueness is brilliant, but looking at the code tells a different story than what a lot of people would have you believe.

joeblau··on Bitcoin is failing at becoming the future of money
Go to the git repo on GitHub, check out the code, go to the first commit, and see how many times the word “Poker” is in the code base.

Bitcoin was simply designed to be an in game currency for a poker game, but the narrative has been co-opted by so many people that it’s become something else.

joeblau··on A URL Lengthener
I don’t know why but just seeing this title made spontaneously start laughing.
joeblau··on Show HN: Tokenlaunch – Find the best new tokens in Crypto
Op here. Our goal is to build the product hunt for Crypto. Our platform helps small cap tokens gain visibility both inside and outside of the crypto community.

joeblau··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
Random diamond story! As a freshman in college, I took a geology class and our teacher asked all of the women in our class to raise their hand if they would rather have natural or human-made diamonds. Most of the women (over 80%) raised their hands for natural. The reasons they gave all seemed to tie back to branding and natural diamonds being “real.”

Then our teacher gave another analogy. He asked if people would rather have natural ice or human-made ice in their water. He broke down that the human-made ice could be frozen in a freezer to a custom size/shape, be a lot cleaner, consistent in how you make it, and chemically no different than H20 than naturally occurring frozen water. As you looked around the lecture hall, you started to see people’s brains unlock. He went on to explain cost efficiencies, ethics, challenges with conflict diamonds, and how you could make a perfect diamond at a fraction of the coast.

After a 30 minute lecture, he asked the question again. Surprisingly, the majority of the women still wanted natural diamonds although the number was less than the original amount that raised their hand. That was the point where I realized the strength of diamonds product branding.

joeblau··on Google promised its contact tracing app was completely private, but it wasn’t
On iOS, none of that is even possible with physical access. Nothing that you’re saying sounds hard for a malicious actor to pull off. The interesting thing is that you’re getting is a historical log without the need to install anything.

joeblau··on Ask HN: I feel my career is at a dead end. Any advice on what could I do?
I, thankfully, ran into this problem when I was 28 and I'll just let you know my journey. The thing that I realized about my career is that the _people_ I was working with where "dead end people." They basically followed what society was telling them to do. If Google/Facebook/Redhat engineers invented some tech (today Google/Amazon/Microsoft), our team was just re-implementing it 5-10 years later. When I realized it was the people I had a decision to make — Try and change the people I work with or move myself to an area where people were still excited about the future.

I moved to Silicon Valley and have never looked back.

I've been programming since I was in high school (started on TI-81 in 1996), I'll be 40 this year and I still LOVE LOVE programming. BUT the only reason I do love it is because I've reached a level of mastery where I pretty much get to choose what projects I work on and the _people_ I work with. Steve Jobs said something back in the 90's that Ive heard other say about the variance in skills of developers vs other jobs[1].

You're burned out because you're working with low quality people and it's way easier to move yourself to an ecosystem where people are more excited about the future than it is to change your peers. (P. T. Barnum also says something similar to this in Art Of Money Getting, published in 1880 [2])

Also, contrarian advice — almost every one of my friends has switched to a manager track. I'm currently in the process of building my own company and most of them can't provide any value at this early stage. They don't read anything on how to become effective managers, they aren't socializing in any communities, they aren't attending any conferences on people management, not reading any books as life long learners, they say things like "I'm technical" and "I know enough to be dangerous", but they can't materially contribute to helping me build my product outside of testing and light UI feedback.

So my two things would be:

  1. Move to a better environment (Doesn't have to be SV but some place where there is a community passionate about things you are).
  2. If you're going to eject out of coding, eject to an owner, not to an employee.

joeblau··on Figma to React
You may be losing some conversions on your figma page because of a typo in the url to your site which includes a period after your .app TLD.
joeblau··on Figma to React
Is there a working example of a website that is using this?
joeblau··on Justice at Spotify
I was just listening to a podcast and the CEO was talking about how he wants 1 million artists to be able to live off Spotify[1]. I always find it interesting how far the company implementation of the vision diverges from what the founder says the vision is. This was also something that I saw with Uber. A question i have is what leads to this disconnect?

joeblau··on GitHub Deceased User Policy
Pretty much. I’ve always heard people say that they want places like Twitter and IG to keep accounts open for memories, but what you described is exactly it; a centralized memorial.
joeblau··on GitHub Deceased User Policy
Is there a standard internet graveyard? For example, some place where all of your social media, blog posts, code and platform data can live under one ID after you pass away?

joeblau··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
The funny thing is that there is 117x more Bitcoin on Layer 2 ETH in WBTC[1] than in the lighting network[2].

$5,793,513,475.00 // WBTC (Bitcoin on Ethereum)
     $49,173,964.59 // Lightning
