joecool1029··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
The news is that the FCC approved the acquisition. It was already announced back in April that Amazon would be purchasing Globalstar. I don’t think anyone expected it to be held up by regulators.

Edit: proper link to it https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/us-agency-app...

joecool1029··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
The HDD connector usually unseats slightly and it stops working. Pop it open with a credit card and reseat it. A more dangerous way that sometimes gets it working again is to wait for it not to be spinning and give the edge a good smack against palm of your hand. This usually works to reset it the tiny bit it needs…
joecool1029··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
Required watching for more on the extreme Kushner family corruption, I see other comments going on about his father-in-law, why not learn how fucked up his father is as well: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U-xT3ilk51c
joecool1029··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
> e.g. Japanese culture in many circumstances requires a company to rush to apologize for the smallest perceived (not even actual) fault

For a something this big they'd probably have execs making a visit to a certain forest.

joecool1029··on PHP 8.2.35
Gentoo has it updated.
joecool1029··on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer
If you're on Gentoo, I've been keeping this maintained in their main tree. Had the patched version available for users since July 15th...

I also maintain a netbird ebuild in my overlay if you want a FOSS alternative to tailscale to put it behind.

joecool1029··on Feds got warrants to use fake cell towers to hunt down Don Lemon's producer
>The latter should provide complete protection from IMSI/IMEI sniffing by rogue base stations.

Only on SA and even there it is optional: https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/CSWP/NIST.CSWP.36A.pdf

joecool1029··on A Remote Employee Refused 160 Webcam Photos a Day. Her Employer Fired Her
No clue how to write this publication for a correction. Ridiculous.

The employer is in Clifton, NJ... not Clinton.

joecool1029··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Likely a major limiting factor behind doing another Curiosity is plutonium-238 being scarce (it’s too big to rely on solar). Production was only restarted a few years ago: https://science.nasa.gov/planetary-science/programs/radioiso...
joecool1029··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
To be fair it’s probably important to note he was never elected president…
joecool1029··on No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
Believe it or not at least 40 million tons of it ends up in the Amazon basin each year where it does have an effect on the plants there: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/1/1/014...

It goes elsewhere too, as expected.

joecool1029··on Eating Fruit Skins
>I think we can assume that apples and cherries are OK to eat. Apple pips are fine and why on earth would you want to crunch through a cherry stone.

Black cherries (prunus serotina) I ate a whole bunch of during late summer. Much smaller than the Prunus avium (sweet cherry) which ripens around early June here. Allegedly the fruit does contain the cyanide producing compounds but without the enzymes. The catch is if you chew the pits (or eat the leaves/stems) it is poisonous. Poisons a lot of horses and other livestock: https://horsedvm.com/poisonous/black-cherry-trees

joecool1029··on Getting 50 GB/S Back from the Apple Neural Engine
This only appeared to happen with Safari on my end. Edge and Firefox didn't appear to have the back button hijacked here. Maybe some browsers do block the behavior now? (or maybe ublock origin blocked it, I'm not sure)
joecool1029··on Will There Be a 7G?
ATT did a lot of this, android has a ‘feature’ they utilize to inflate the signal bar: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/...
joecool1029··on Trezor's email provider has been breached
I’ve complained upstream to them before about their (lack of) security processes making downstream distro package management more difficult: https://github.com/trezor/trezord-go/issues/293
joecool1029··on Peppermint oil reduces blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg in small study
I'm wondering if caffeine was accounted for in this. One thing I seem to recall is peppermint tea has some inhibition of CYP1A2. I notice it's missing from the wikipedia page now, so maybe this was a flawed study or something... figured I'd mention in case anyone else knows.

At least this study says the activity was reduced, not significantly though: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S02786...

joecool1029··on Adafruit USB Type C CC Resistor Fixer
There were some higher profile products that left this out like the original revisions of the raspberry pi 4.
joecool1029··on Telegram Removed from App Store
still appears if you are in their testflight beta… weird

EDIT: apparently restored to appstore according to various sources.

joecool1029··on Tell HN: Namecheap gave my account to an unverified third party
Been moving all my domains to them for a couple years now. Happy so far with them and they handle some of the harder tld’s to find a registrar for.
joecool1029··on Linux 7.1
It’s good. I packaged it in my gentoo overlay and have been using it for a couple months, none of the weird issues ntfs3 had.
joecool1029··on Bitwarden scrubs 'Always free' and 'Inclusion' values from its site
> vaultwarden is great, but password managers are security critical software that need consistent maintenance and constant updates.

You’re acting like this isn’t the case already with vaultwarden? (and it’s easier to host as well, making for easier updates) https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden/releases

joecool1029··on New Nginx Exploit
lighttpd still around too, on 1.4.82, not too much changed there.
joecool1029··on Kickstarter is forced to ban adult content by payment processors
To expand a little on this, Zelle and debit card transactions are covered under Regulation E: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/rules-policy/regulations/100... . So there’s a codified procedure for disputes, it’s just a little less consumer friendly.
joecool1029··on Tell NYT, Atlantic, USA Today to keep Wayback Machine
> Aren't you choosing to ignore something very specific specified in that article?

Of course not, did you ignore the lines right after? “As we have moved towards broader access it has not caused problems, which we take as a good sign. We are now looking to do this more broadly.”

The announcement is from 9 years ago. I already mentioned they ignored the robots.txt for my own blog.

joecool1029··on EFF to 4th Circuit: Electronic Device Searches at the Border Require a Warrant
> There's Supreme Court precedent establishing that this isn't the case.

This? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Martinez-Fuer... or is there newer now?

> ACLU itself had backed off it, last I checked

They did, the current page greatly narrows the scope of their border-zone guidance to the SCOTUS case I linked before: https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/border-zone

joecool1029··on Tell NYT, Atlantic, USA Today to keep Wayback Machine
Which they don’t respect. I’ve had it for my blog for years and they still added it to wayback machine, see my last comment for their official announcement of the ignore robots.txt policy, it is not new.
joecool1029··on Tell NYT, Atlantic, USA Today to keep Wayback Machine
No, archive.org does NOT respect robots.txt. You need to reach out to them directly and ask your site not be included: https://blog.archive.org/2017/04/17/robots-txt-meant-for-sea...
joecool1029··on Ted Turner has died
#4 largest private land owner in the US: https://landreport.com/land-report-100#top-100

Wonder what's going to be done with it now that he's dead.

joecool1029··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
Hard to believe it's over 10 years since they first started pulling crap like this by downloading a binary to listen for 'OK Google' (including on chromium builds): https://lwn.net/Articles/648392/
joecool1029··on California farmers to destroy 420k peach trees following Del Monte bankruptcy
Not sure that's citric acid doing that, it's probably bromelain, which can be used as a meat tenderizer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromelain
