joefarish··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
I don't have the grouped boxes but I use a sieve filter on my ISPs mailserver to automatically create folders based on prefix@mydomain.example

Here is my script:

require ["fileinto","imap4flags","variables","regex","mailbox"];

## A catch all filter designed to automatically organise emails sent to a catch-all address into a folder based on the receiving address e.g amazon@example.com --> INBOX.Amazon ## If the folder doesn't exist it is automatically created

if exists "X-Delivered-To" { if header :regex "X-Delivered-To" "([^@]+)" { set :upperfirst "prefix" "${1}"; fileinto :create "INBOX.${prefix}"; stop; } }

joefarish··on Ask HN: My competitor wants to buy us out, recommend a lawyer?
In what jurisdiction are you and they domiciled?
joefarish··on Ask HN: Have you been fired because of AI?
Do you mean fired or let go / made redundant?
joefarish··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
This is a very good way of putting it.
joefarish··on A proposed amendment to ban under 16s in the UK from common online services
Another well written article from Neil about some terribly written legislation.

His personal blog is also pretty good - https://neilzone.co.uk/

joefarish··on Unreal Tournament 2004 is back
Facing Worlds was absolutely peak.
joefarish··on Show HN: A Minimal Monthly Task Planner (printable, offline, no signup)

joefarish··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
We've all done it. I'm curious though, I wonder what would be the best way to prevent a user from doing this.
joefarish··on Oxford loses top 3 university ranking in the UK
I'm not saying it's wrong but people are reacting to this as if the Times university guide is some objective truth.

Regarding the potential lowering of standards for widening participation purposes, this doesn't change the fact that the entry standards for Oxford and Cambridge are still higher than LSE and St. Andrews.

joefarish··on Ask HN: What is the worst communications tool you've ever used?
100% agree on this. It was terrible pre-pandemic and as much as people complain about Zoom / Teams etc Webex continues to be atrocious.
joefarish··on Meta AI App built with Llama 4
There are plenty of people who are aware of the "trade-off" of using their products but are still happy to do so. Just because they've come to a different conclusion to you doesn't mean they are in some way "wrong" to do that.
joefarish··on Tell HN: OpenAI added heavy censorship on GPT4o image generation yesterday
This is where you ask ChatGPT to describe the Studio Ghibli art style and then use that to create a prompt. It's an annoying extra step but it can get good results.
joefarish··on Ask HN: What browser do y'all use?
Safari purely because of the integration with Apple Passwords / Mail / iMessage
joefarish··on Apple's new AI leaves out more than 90% of current iPhone users
Some very cynical comments on this thread. Maybe, just maybe the older hardware isn't really capable of running these features properly and it's not some evil conspiracy to "force" users into upgrading?
joefarish··on Ask HN: How to Deal with Revenge Bedtime Procrastination?
Quite a bit of good advice here but I'd strongly recommended a "no screens in your bedroom" rule and make sure you have a good book to read.
joefarish··on Ask HN: What will you be working on over xmas?
What does agilend do?
joefarish··on Ask HN: What upcoming technologies do you find most promising and intriguing?
Locally run LLMs, specifically being able to run them on your Phone.
joefarish··on Raspberry Pi 5
I think they answer your question in the PSU section “Raspberry Pi 5 consumes significantly less power, and runs significantly cooler, than Raspberry Pi 4 when running an identical workload.”
joefarish··on Reddit's CEO: Third-Party Apps Add 'No Value.' How He Lost the Thread
Reddit's ask isn't unreasonable in principal however the inflated API pricing and the short lead-time are just ridiculous.
joefarish··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
I'm sure part of that is the pound tanking against the dollar!
joefarish··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
If anyone is interested in getting started with DE shaving, there is a really good wiki on /r/wicked_edge with a beginners kit guide https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/wiki/de_kit
joefarish··on Ask HN: What hyper-focused industry newsletters do you enjoy?
I use https://kill-the-newsletter.com/ to get an RSS feed :-)
joefarish··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had done/known in your 30s?
Great list, I think that in particular sleep schedule is so important. Really helps with making good choices regarding diet and exercise as well.
joefarish··on Securely Yours, Love Password Managers (2021)
I'm a big fan of Enpass [1]. It's user friendly enough for the not so technical members of my family to use it and importantly (for me) sync is achieved via encrypted files stored on Google Drive (other services such as Dropbox are also supported).

joefarish··on Advice on accessing BBC News
I can think of a few occasions where they have reported on some less than truthful statements from government ministers without adding any commentary. This has certainly led to allegations of bias but do you have some examples of where their news output is “flat-out propaganda”?
joefarish··on Ask HN: Can you relax without a screen?
That sounds interesting. Is it going to be about the psychology behind why people play those games? Is there a way for people to stay up to date with progress on the book / when it might be released?
joefarish··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
There is another active thread on the same topic - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29703564
joefarish··on My Favorite Software Subreddits

joefarish··on Uranium Glass
I thought this might have been an article on turning nuclear waste into glass (vitrification). Might be of interest to some people especially given current questions/challenges regarding reclassifying nuclear as "renewable":

joefarish··on Ask HN: Share your side project
I think this is a great idea. A few thoughts on the site:

1. Initially I was entering the hashtags with the # included e.g "#formula1" and I couldn't understand why it wasn't working. Perhaps you could just automatically remove/ignore the # symbol if someone types it in?

2. It would be great if you could provide links to some pre-canned searches for recent events. For example: a recent F1 race (f1calendar.com) , football game (https://footballcal.com/) or popular TV show.

2.a) Related to the above it would be great to be able to link directly to a particular hashtag & time period e.g https://www.hashtagreplay.com/?t=1627822800&h=f1

3. Would you be able to add the ability to "pause" or "rewind" a hashtag? Sometimes I'll be watching a show (normally live sport) and the TV feed or stream will be on a slight delay. I'd love to be able to pause the twitter feed so that I can get the two in sync.

4. Perhaps a "premium" feature could be the ability to replay tweets from a twitter list/collection. For example, replay the tweets from Formula 1 journalists during a race.
