joepestro··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2013)
beRecruited.com - Fulltime, on-site (San Francisco)

We're the nation's largest online college athletics recruiting platform, and we're hiring. Our team has smart, fun full-stack engineers (including 3 YC founders), and we're growing quickly.

Ruby on Rails or iOS developer? Get in touch with me:

joepestro··on Turntable.fm Hits 140,000 Users in Its First Month
Here's another one called Turntable.fm Extended (has a few other features, like notifications):

joepestro··on Engineers Recruit Engineers With Hackruiter (YC S10)
The hints on the bottom bar are a nice touch. I kept refreshing the page to see them all. Also found out about the keyboard shortcuts that way! (Hint: Press ?)
joepestro··on Asteroids JavaScript Bookmarklet to blow up any web site
Same here! Except instead of blowing up the page, you shoot at links to follow them. Also, fog that is revealed as you move around, minimap, etc. Maybe this can spark some more ideas?

joepestro··on Instant Suggestions x15 (for Chrome)
Whoops! I hacked this together this weekend, there might be a few bugs. Thanks for letting me know though.
joepestro··on Instant Suggestions x15 (for Chrome)
You're right. Updated.
joepestro··on Vanity - an Experiment Driven Development framework for Rails
This is a rails gem, so you get all the benefits of integration with the web framework. As far as I know, GWO does A/B testing between hardcoded URLs, so the logic is then split between GWO (to redirect to the correct page) and your app (to serve the correct content for that page).
joepestro··on Dustin Curtis's new web app
Check out http://www.pinglater.com for calling yourself on a certain date, too :)

Note: I developed this iPhone app

joepestro··on Facebook adds @mentions to status updates.
Agree. Tweetdeck does this.
joepestro··on Rails Rumble finalists announced - Vote for the best 48-hour micro-app
Yep. We had an awesome designer working with our team. He mocked all the pages up after discussing our ideas, then cut then up perfectly for html/css (button sprites, background images, etc).

Wouldn't have been nearly as good without him.

joepestro··on Listia (YC S09) Is An Awesome Way To Give And Get Free Stuff
I think you need to list an item to get the 500 credits.
joepestro··on Your World of Text, my current side project. Requires FF3+ or Safari 4, I think.
Isn't working in FF3.5, but works fine for me in Safari 4.
joepestro··on JamLegend’s ‘Guitar Hero For The Web’ Lets You Play Any Song You’d Like
I've played with JamLegend before. It's really well done, and this feature seems to be one that is the natural next step for what people want from a music-oriented game. Nice work!
joepestro··on Apture and Kiw.is = URL shortening with a twist – Blog – Apture.com
Thanks! Apture is actually really powerful and adds a lot to content (even automatically). I played with it at http://www.apture.com/create/ before implementing it into Kiwis.
joepestro··on See what apps were built in a day
Just tried out doubleblind.at. It's neat! I've also seen quizzes that work under this principle where you attempt to guess what picture/status update is associated with a choice of 4 friends. I like your thumbs up/thumbs down approach and then seeing the final results.
joepestro··on See what apps were built in a day
This was really fun. I think the time constraint of 1 day allows you to focus on what really matters and how you can be really efficient with productivity.

Constraints are interesting. Twitter = 140 characters, One Day App = 24 hours. What seems like a hindrance turns out to be what makes them popular and engaging. We can show what we can accomplish in 1 day, and it makes the apps featured here that much more impressive.

I know we learned a lot about what can be optimized and where the time sinks really are when making apps that appear to be simple at first glance. There was a pretty lengthy discussion on HN over the past weeks about the perceived ease of building a site like Stack Overflow. Participating in an event like this shows you first hand all the edge cases and details that get in your way when building an app over the course of a weekend (or in this case, 24 hours). There are always things that come up that you don't think of in the planning stages. For me, I always remind myself to use less theory and more action. It's an easy trap to fall into, endlessly planning and trying to figure out everything in your mind. But in my experience it's often better to work through a problem rather than guess at how I would work through it. Sounds like a simple distinction, but it often makes a big difference.

I hope this becomes a recurring event! It was fun to see what we can accomplish in one day.

joepestro··on Ask HN: What website project are you working on?
Just finished building an iPhone app that is awaiting Apple's approval now: http://www.pinglater.com/

We're doing a 1 day web app event this weekend, so I'll be able to share more about everyone's apps soon!

joepestro··on Facebook: Share Photos and Videos Anywhere You Have Email
Poster here. This "unimpressive feature" is at the heart of YC backed Posterous. Thought it would be interesting to see the comparison.

And if you want to talk about site guidelines, your comment is against them:

"Please don't submit comments complaining that a submission is inappropriate for the site. If you think something is spam or offtopic, flag it by going to its page and clicking on the "flag" link. (Not all users will see this; there is a karma threshold.) If you flag something, please don't also comment that you did."

joepestro··on [dead]
Leafy Chat looks really neat. The design is a significant improvement over mibbit.
joepestro··on Magic Wars (YC W09) Turns Your iPhone Into A Virtual Wand
For your website you'll want to pick something that users will be able to display and have installed by default.

HN primarily uses Verdana. Google primarily uses Arial. 37signals uses a combo of Helvetica (generic sans-serif if not present) and Georgia.

joepestro··on Review my startup: ShopTalk
Looks cool, but while we're on the subject - what makes this better than the established players like Campfire (http://campfirenow.com/)?
joepestro··on How to find new startup ideas? The answer is in the question.
Great post. I think you highlight the real value of the HN community. High quality discussion makes listening for ideas easier as there is more signal with less noise to wade through.

There are few other places on the web where you can listen for quality ideas, discuss problems, and get feedback at a really fast (and efficient) rate.

joepestro··on IPhone Web Development with Ruby on Rails
I assume you need access to iPhone hardware features (microphone, etc). Unfortunately, you can't do that through mobilesafari.

Check out the iPhone SDK for more info: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/

joepestro··on How to Create a Firefox Plugin (hacker-friendly javascript framework)
Wow, I'm glad not everyone shares your mindset.

CSS grids aren't that difficult, but I find http://960.gs/ really useful. Having a nice, packaged example of best practices comes in handy.

If this saves me 5 minutes each time I want to create a quick firefox extension, it provides value. Thanks for sharing, trevelyan!

joepestro··on How to Create a Firefox Plugin (hacker-friendly javascript framework)
Jetpack is an additional extension install for users.

This framework looks like it builds native extensions without an extension needing to be preinstalled - at least until jetpack is shipped with ff.

joepestro··on Starting Up, One Year Later: Chasing Dragons
I'm looking forward to this series.

So, am I reading this right? TicketStumbler has become a maintenance project for a summer intern?

joepestro··on Ask HN: Please review Utilium.com – a web app for sharing learning materials
1. Awesome visual design

2. I really like the screenshots and large sign up button. They're all the same screenshot, though, so I can't get a better idea of what is inside.

3. I'm not the target audience since I'm not a professor. I wish there was a video or more screenshots so that I could see all your work before I need to create an account.

Small CSS issue: I'm on FF3, looks like a vertical spacing issue with your search go button (id is global_search-submit).

joepestro··on Triangular buttons key to touchscreen typing success
This could be made into an iPhone app for email/sms.

It wouldn't replace the native keyboard on the iPhone, but would allow users to compose their message using this triangular keyboard and forward the text to the appropriate application.

joepestro··on Ask HN: No-names, tell your story on how you got PR coverage
For sure, and we agree.

We're not looking to convert on this audience (HN/techcrunch/digg/reddit etc) - we just launched and we think feedback like this from really smart people is super useful. We're still gathering information before we feel like we can present an easy-to-use package for consumers.

It's harder on price comparison forums to ask our customers what they want and get a conversation started when they're looking to discuss the best deals on digital cameras. We tell them about the product, and hope they try it out. If they don't reach out to submit feedback, it doesn't help us as much in improving.
