joewadcan··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
Not true at all. Exits and switching lanes all require confirmation from the drivers in other cars, not in Teslas on FSD
joewadcan··on Ask HN: I want to create IMDB for open source projects
This.

Just because something should exist, doesn't mean it can be created today. The effort to build and attract open source projects is a monumental task. Unless you're offering something BIG - there's alot of inertia to overcome.

I'd focus on building on top of the GitHub API to create those features you want. Not only will you focus your time on the unique stuff, GitHub can help with distribution and discovery.

joewadcan··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
When you say "we need" do you mean... "you want to see" ? The highest selling vehicles are trucks and so the company that makes the best selling car wants in. Seems logical and good for the industry
joewadcan··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Exactly ! The social stuff requires a network effect... hilarious that the makers of Facebook bet their chips on the same bet as their existing products. Apple knows it doesn't need groups of people to use this together, just enough early adopters to help pay for (and more importantly help guide) the user research and material advancement.
joewadcan··on Ford to spend $1.3B to transform Canada factory into EV manufacturing hub
I'd bet that Ford is the only legacy American brand that will make it to 2033. And it's because of their heavy investment to manufacture more and not just assemble - great to see it happen
joewadcan··on Ford to spend $1.3B to transform Canada factory into EV manufacturing hub
Better towing, lower maintenance... seems like ICE vehicles are going to need the government subsidy if anyone will even want them
joewadcan··on Tesla Model 2 will have 53kWh LFP battery pack
Less efficient inverters, worse aerodynamics, weaker motors, heavier interiors, and probably worse software (that one is an educated guess).

joewadcan··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
Recall = Over the Air Update.

Not nothing, but not as big as CNBC is making it out to be.

joewadcan··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
In 2017 it was relatively empty... but the company filled it very quickly as it grew from 200 to 2000 people. So much so they leased out the building next door and tore down some walls to deal with capacity. Sad to hear it's being shut down that office is truly incredible.
joewadcan··on Tell HN: Coinbase keeps photos of your ID indefinitely
Worrying yes, but i think it's required. KYC laws in the US mandate a 5 year retention AFTER the account is closed:

https://bsaaml.ffiec.gov/manual/Appendices/17 > A bank must retain the identifying information about a customer for a period of five years after the date the account is closed, or in the case of credit card accounts, five years after the account becomes closed or dormant.

joewadcan··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Energy products. Megapacks are sold out for 12 months in advance right now and the queue is getting bigger.
joewadcan··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Markets are irrational in the short term for sure, but very good allocators of capital long term.

re: Twitter Price is just the last transaction to clear and the buyers can make that transaction for a million reasons, some of them betting that intrinsically the price doesn't reflect their value of the company. Seems fine to me. Wrong in the short term now looking back, but a million other things may have happened differently (TikTok could have been banned, Musk could have taken over differently, Macro trends could have reversed...etc)

joewadcan··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Same. but not for the reason of mining rights. They definitely have long term contracts for their own production secured but are a long ways from cornering that market.

I think the energy side of their business is about to grow tremendously and they'll reduce profit margin and continue growing crazy fast on the auto side.

joewadcan··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
"Shutting down factories" is the not the same as slowing production. Tesla is expanding their production since they are wildly profitable.
joewadcan··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
I'd bet against that. Tesla is flush with cash, zero debt, and growing revenue annually more that most Fortune 100 companies. They are very profitable without any subsidies and still have a 28% profit margin on the cars they sell
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
They are reliable enough to use for FSD: https://youtu.be/hx7BXih7zx8 so i think it's reliable enough for park assist, summon etc. Yeah you're def right about the moisture sealing... it's been hit or miss on production tolerances
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
Yeah i think that's probably gonna happen here too, hence their "at this time" language.
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
Because if the hardware isn't available they can't deliver the car and recognize the revenue. They can wait, but if they're gonna remove it anyway it lets them make more cars with less costs in shorter time. Seems logical if it is indeed parity.
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
Agreed. "Parity" doesn't mean in all cases, it means in the majority of cases and this seems like a edge case (where 2 car lengths isn't good enough).
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
They specifically call that out in the doc.

"At this time, we do not plan to remove the functionality of ultrasonic sensors in our existing fleet."

joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
FSD is just the software component, so it doesn't change anything. FSD is still optional
joewadcan··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
Tesla cameras have sizeable overlap, so if one is obstructed it tries to extract the information from the others. If it can't then it tells you to clean the cameras. It's not perfect but it's better for them (Tesla) and hopefully better long term for all Tesla owners
joewadcan··on Ask HN: Why is everything a SaaS product?
People have already mentioned all the technical aspects, or blamed capitalism... but I really think it's just the best fit for the benefits that software delivers. It provides lower barriers to try for consumers and higher long term rewards for the company that builds the software. You can certainly find companies that have a flat rate or fixed price, but the incentive to build those projects from the beginning is usually outcompeted by the incentive to build a subscription product.
joewadcan··on Helium
This was pretty disappointing. To see FreedomFi not own up to the fact that 4g vs 5g is misleading... with their excuse that everyone else is doing it.
joewadcan··on Helium
I think you're misreading. HNT was the original token and was a new chain. Data credits are just how the outside world burns those credits at a fixed price, so that they don't need to know about crypto. Not a token.

And Nova Labs doesn't get any of that onboarding money. That is burned by the network.
