johmue··on Show HN: OpenNutrition – A free, public nutrition database
Let me type more than a letter maybe? On safari I get results after typing a single letter but I would like to spell out the entire word. Probably a bug

johmue··on We are sorry to inform you that you are in a cult
whatever you are thinking about while reading this is probably the cult you are in
johmue··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
yeah, hardly a rant. Hardly any serious problems. Homebrew IS the package manager for apple, get a window-snapping tool and/or learn to use alt-click on the green "maximise window button". Keep enjoying. Done.
johmue··on Ask HN: I realise data science is not for me and feel depressed
Few things you learn are ever truly wasted. Especially DS knowledge when you are switching to software engineering. I know data science and machine learning are all the rage right now, I work in a data science unit and assist the really smart phds around me and build the platforms they are working on. Be happy that you found out know and not later. Software engineering is amazing. You can do infinite things and your actually building stuff. Sorry that you don't feel good about it right now but building things is so much fun and so rewarding, you are going to be okay!
johmue··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
maybe just don't buy devices where the screen folds. it is unholy and obviously leads to punishment by the spirits
johmue··on Viagra Is Linked to Almost 70% Lower Risk of Alzheimer's
It's the third option: I guess we all know it's not the viagra, but I would suggest it's also not the sex but rather what is associated with a lifestyle that includes the potential for sex: a lifestyle with connection, a partner and possibly friends. A bigger social group is pretty tightly related to better health outcomes
johmue··on Is Microsoft Stealing People’s Bookmarks?
the big companies need to go away don't they?
johmue··on Pieces of Shit
doesn't matter if it's true
johmue··on People are realizing that degrowth is bad
how tiring to argue over this. "Degrowthing" is a means to an end. I don't think many people have a problem with "growth" itself just because they somehow religiously hate anything that growth. It's just that as is we are not exactly making things better and if we do more (without adjusting what we do) then that certainly can't suddenly be better for our planet. If we want to do less damage we have to reduce the damage that we are doing. Certainly selling increasing amounts of "stuff" is not making things better. I you can somehow make it so that any flavour of growth can be done while reducing the impact, great, go ahead.

In short: It's not that I hate cars, I like cars, I like driving. But in order to not break the world we live in we need to make fewer cars and drive them less. If you can suddenly make a car that does significantly less damage or negative damage then PLEASE make it, I will buy it. Growth Yay!

johmue··on The CentOS Project Just Committed Suicide
well as it says in the article "[with CentOS] you basically get a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux with same packages and same updates." - I assume that don't sit well with IBM, the owner of Red Hat the owner of CentOS.
johmue··on Found hidden safe, should we crack?
at this point I am so invested in it that I can already not sleepy over it!
johmue··on Show HN: Tree of Reddit Sex Life
no it's not
johmue··on US refuses to ground Boeing 737 Max
max crash aircraft - what a headline
johmue··on YouTube Unleashed a Conspiracy Theory Boom. Can It Be Contained?
and Youtube is a breeding and feeding ground for those conspiracies. More and more extreme content creates emotional reactions, clicks and binds attention therefore it is recommended frequently to optimise the only metric that matters for youtube: the time you spent on their platform - no matter what.
johmue··on Users don’t need a password
i always like solutions that start with "just make an app". Especially if the problem is about convenience.
johmue··on A bot that tweets anonymous Wikipedia edits from IP addresses in the US Congress
Amazing idea!
johmue··on Travis-Pls: Travis Builds That Don't Timeout
so your flipping off the company that is testing opensource projects for free because your build process is wonky?
johmue··on [dead]
no time or reason to become a dictator? It took Hitler 5 months. I would also question how mature the US democracy is. Just because it's old, doesn't not mean it has been overhauled often enough to be bulletproof. But more importantly, this is not about Trump, because he might not have these anti democratic views as part of his systematic worldview, but someone else close behind him with growing power does: Bannon. That man has a dark plan and he hasn't kept it secret.
johmue··on How fear of nuclear power is hurting the environment
> Costs

The politicians are not "drafting rules to require more safety" just for fun. Not regulating nuclear energy makes it cheaper but seems rather unsafe. (because humans, you know)
