Tech worker in Bay Area

john_w_t_b··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
Air pollution is reduced by misty light rain. The process is called wet deposition. Swarms of electric drones could mist cities with water every morning to reduce air pollution. The technology should be feasible and economically justified.

Here’s a link about wet deposition.

Here’s a recent example of misty rain at work in the Bay Area.

john_w_t_b··on Sales of electric cars up by 43% in 2020
How about Jeep 4XE, RAV4 Prime or Mitsubishi Outlander. PHEV options are expanding for all wheel drive.
john_w_t_b··on Working from Bed
I agree on the benefits of varied workspaces. I work in the backyard, while walking the dog, sitting in the living room or sitting at my desk. I have a low cost bike desk that lets me exercise while working also.

Since the pandemic, I started spending some afternoons working from my car at the beach. Find a beach where you can park overlooking the ocean while working on the laptop. For breaks, you can take walks on the beach. Large bodies of water are very soothing.

john_w_t_b··on Lack of Vitamin D is associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality
I’ve been taking vitamin D daily for the past year. I came across the study below recently that suggests that Coenzyme Q10 could also reduce hospitalization rates for COVID. This is another low cost over the counter nutritional supplement. It’s also called ubiquinone.

john_w_t_b··on As Hospital Prices Soar, a Single Stitch Tops $500
We need price caps for emergency care. Limiting prices to a small multiple of Medicare rates should solve the problem. Private providers can operate with price limits. Look at private electric utilities as an example. I'd like to see a price cap proposition at a future California election. I think it would pass.
john_w_t_b··on Why I Silence Calls Even When I'm Free
I think this is a side effect of the Internet. Smartphones give you unlimited information at your fingertips. With all the distractions online, it's easy to become detached from your friends and family. I have the same problem.

john_w_t_b··on “Why did you shoot me? I was reading a book”
Could this be related to the heavily armed citizenry? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_co...

Cops in UK don't carry guns.

john_w_t_b··on Ouya’s $99 Android-based video game console finally hits store shelves
Sold out on Amazon already. That's a nice start to their retail launch. I just ordered one from Best Buy.
john_w_t_b··on Facebook Releases Data, Including All National Security Requests
I think these are true numbers. I assume that everything I put on Facebook is prone to public dissemination anyhow. The whole point of site is to share your data.
john_w_t_b··on Poll: Will you be changing how you manage your data after the NSA scandal?
I have a shared hosting account for $5 per month. It's great for email, web hosting, personal files etc. plus I get to own my data and only share what I want.
john_w_t_b··on We Think We Know What Elon Musk's Hyperloop Is
I hope this is it. Suborbital hops between cities would be a spectacular ride. Minimal ground infrastructure needed also.
john_w_t_b··on Glass
Google glass seems like a solution looking for a problem. Impressive tech, but what is the use case that makes up for awkward controls and two hour battery life? You can strap your smart-phone to your wrist for $30 and get hands-free operation.

I am much more excited about self-driving cars. Maybe Google could transfer some of the tech to heads-up displays for drivers.

john_w_t_b··on Our Recurring Payment Pricing Was Rejected
This is a common arrangement for consultants in the ERP sector. It's a nice way to start a software business. Your customers provide you with seed capital, user requirements and a reference site. I've seen a couple of people start multi-million dollar businesses with this approach.
john_w_t_b··on Our Recurring Payment Pricing Was Rejected
Most software projects are capital expenditure ("capex"). Often the capex budget is set annually, and the investments are depreciated over subsequent years. Recurring monthly fees seem more like an expense than a capital investment. Hence, SaaS may not work with the budget allocated.
john_w_t_b··on Petition to the European Union ("Citizen initiative") for Basic Income
Basic income would increase consumer demand and boost the EU economies. The poor already receive welfare payments in Europe. Make those payments unconditional, and the unemployed will be more inclined to take part-time and casual work to boost their incomes.

The middle class and rich will receive the basic income also. To these groups, the money will be a bonus and effectively a partial refund of their income taxes. It may encourage more people to try starting a business as they have some income to sustain them during the development phase.

john_w_t_b··on PhD vs Startup
I dropped out of my CS PhD after two years. I regret not doing a startup instead.

I was working for a big tech firm in Silicon Valley in late 2000. I was looking for a career change so I applied to a few startups including Google. The Google recruiter called me repeatedly to come in for an interview, but I decided to quit the job search and pursue a PhD instead.

Studying for a PhD was fun, but I couldn't adjust to the lower income. I'd been working in industry for the previous five years so it was a 80% drop in income at least. Plus I got married and had a kid in those two years. That complicated things considerably.

john_w_t_b··on PhD vs Startup
Don't agree with this statement from the post.

"A PhD is safer. If you don’t do so well, you are going to get the title anyways. A Startup is riskier. If you don’t do very well (90% of the time), you can end broke."

Plenty of people drop out without finishing their PhD and generally they are broke afterwards. I'd say a startup is safer as you are closer to industry in case you need to find a job.

john_w_t_b··on It Is Not Flat Design. It's Just Proper Design
Interesting point. Windows 3.1 had a fairly flat design too.

http://toastytech.com/guis/win31default.png

Simplicity is more important than flat design. Can your interface be used by a five year old child or an eighty year old grandparent without instruction? Terminal does not pass that test.

john_w_t_b··on Yahoo looking to acquire Tumblr?
If you owned Yahoo stock, you might be more impressed. The price has risen nicely since Marissa joined.

Check out their weather app for mobile. It has high-resolution photos of your city in relevant weather.

john_w_t_b··on Ask HN: I'm lost. Please help
Yes, I think after 15 months you should have a serious discussion with them. It might take a few days to agree on a plan. Make it clear you need income to go forward. They're probably thinking the same thing as you anyhow.
john_w_t_b··on Poll: Do you use your real identity on HN?
Yes I did this too. Facebook logon is much more convenient when your real identity is not linked to it.
john_w_t_b··on My Medical Choice
They used false teeth.
john_w_t_b··on I Don't Want Your Fucking App
I read dozens of sites on mobile Safari that have wrapped text. There must be a solution. Example

john_w_t_b··on Tesla: a little bit Apple, a little bit Google, and about to be huge
Congrats on a nice gain. You could buy a Model S with your profits.

I bought a Chevy Volt last year. Have really enjoyed driving it so far. Electric cars have really taken off in the past year in Silicon Valley. I see multiple Tesla's, Leafs and Volts every time I take a drive now.

john_w_t_b··on Be cautious about using Chartio (or at least, don’t follow their directions)
This is a good approach. I work with ERP systems for large companies, and it's typical to separate the transactional database (OLTP) from the analytics database (OLAP). There's usually a replication process to copy transactions into the reporting system.
john_w_t_b··on Children of parents classified as “tiger” have worse grades, are more depressed
I think you are wrong. Smart people have high earnings regardless of Ivy League or state school.

john_w_t_b··on Software will not be patentable in New Zealand
This will set a good precedent for other developed countries. Let's hope Australia goes next, and maybe Scandinavia.
john_w_t_b··on Tailgating YC
I like this attitude:

Everything I have ever achieved in life has started with a panel rejecting me, YC was just another notch.

Think I will subscribe to her blog.

john_w_t_b··on Entrepreneurs in America: Who creates jobs?
The government should auction the H1B visas to the highest bidder. This would encourage high value immigration. They could set a price floor of $100k to discourage low wage employers. They should also set a minimum salary for H1B holders of $100k.

There is already a visa for investors creating jobs so that is covered.
