johntiger1··on Character.ai files for bankruptcy, agrees to sell some assets for $20M
I wonder if this will be the first in a string of many..
johntiger1··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Yeah i'm no fan of Elon but starlink is actually quite useful. It solves a real problem - I need network access anywhere on the globe, for any reason, at any time. they can easily charge what they wish for that (military, air travel, desert tourists etc.)
johntiger1··on Shall we play a game? My AI nuclear simulation
LLMs are creatures of statistics and probability - hard to enforce hard boundaries with them
johntiger1··on Anthropic raises $30B in Series G funding at $380B post-money valuation
Google's only focus isn't on Gemini. Anthropic is do-or-die
johntiger1··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
https://bobalearn.org/

Site where you can read and generate graded Chinese stories, in order to learn Chinese. What's a graded story? It's one written with the vocab of a {X} year old. Words are often repeated, so that you can learn from the left-and-right context. I normally pay for book versions of these, so I thought, why not make one that's online and free?

johntiger1··on Google has eliminated 35% of managers overseeing small teams in past year
Yeah principal EM is confusing here. Wouldn't EM I report to EM II? At Meta it's typically M1 -> M2
johntiger1··on Using AI to secure AI
who watches the watch man?
johntiger1··on Open models by OpenAI
Wow, this will eat Meta's lunch
johntiger1··on Las Vegas is embracing a simple climate solution: More trees
Yeah there was no need for an ad hominem there
johntiger1··on Ask HN: If you've used GPT-4-Turbo and Claude Opus, which do you prefer?
There are definitely some shills all over HN now... But even aside from that, the sheer novelty aspect (+less robotic ethical alignment) of it is enough for many
johntiger1··on New York State Department of Labor Warn Filing – April 1 Google Layoff [pdf]
Looks like 225 will be affected starting in April? Or has this already occurred?
johntiger1··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
That sounds terrible; I often look away to the side when I am thinking..
johntiger1··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
Can't her husband just stand in front of her, behind the laptop webcam? There's often ridiculously simple real-world workarounds these complex device security process
johntiger1··on Meta outage
Ironically, Meta employees are also affected by this
johntiger1··on Effects of Cuff Size on the Accuracy of Blood Pressure Readings
Yep, in medical school that's one of the first things we learn. In theory it is also best to measure in both arms (as well as one leg if you suspect a certain diagnosis)
johntiger1··on More Americans can now get insulin for $35
Incredible that a drug discovered >100 years ago can still be used to price gouge Americans... Thankfully now there seems to be some semblance of rationality?
johntiger1··on Ask HN: What are you using to accept payment for a simple SaaS?
Why not Square? Seems to be cheaper. Is the developer experience that much better with Stripe?
johntiger1··on Astronomers detect almost 100 new extremely metal-poor galaxies
Honestly I considered this interpretation for far too long - "extremely-metal" but poor. Now what that means I don't know, but I thought it might have related to something an astronomer could tell me
johntiger1··on Can a transformer represent a Kalman filter?
You also have the AISTATS paper prep page at the very bottom :)
johntiger1··on [dead]
I think it's suspiciously low-engagement. But that might just reflect the HN population
johntiger1··on Ask HN: Are you, your spouse or your children gifted?
Yes, according to some standardized test. But in practice, I don't consider myself particularly quick or intelligent (in comparison to some of my peers, who admittedly would not represent the baseline population).
johntiger1··on Canada's surging cost of living fuels reverse immigration
For your education:

What area were you in? Could it be that it was a rough area? My experience in the GTA is that there definitely are better/worse schools, but there's less elitism in that doctors/CEOs/lawyers will still send their kids to good public schools and private schools are not especially known for academic eliteness (in fact, the most elite academic schools in the GTA are all public, with the exception of 1)

johntiger1··on 23andMe changes terms of service to prevent lawsuits after data breach
Does it apply retroactively to people who already signed up?
johntiger1··on Almost 100k Google employees are about to get a hard-fought $20
Congrats! looks like you hit the jackpot
johntiger1··on Cristiano Ronaldo faces $1B lawsuit over Binance ads
Probably targeted US customers
johntiger1··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
In Twitter's case, what is the hypergrowth story here? I don't see any revolutions coming from Twitter's business model that haven't already occurred in the past decade. Whereas for something like space flight or FSD or novel therapeutics I can see the large potential upside
johntiger1··on Sam Altman's sister, Annie Altman, claims Sam has severely abused her
Does she not receive notifications from Twitter? Thus proving there is no shadowbanning?
johntiger1··on US surgeons perform first whole eye transplant
Usually, candidates considered for heart transplants don't have a great alternative - i.e. healthy enough to survive the surgery but without the surgery these candidates would have deteriorated regardless
johntiger1··on US surgeons perform first whole eye transplant
This is such a ludicrous theory that is sadly repeated often. It is extremely unlikely that your set of organs will be compatible with someone they know who needs organs. Even then, a nurse or allied health professional is much more likely to make a medical error which kills you. You'd be surprised at how thin the line between life and death is, especially for people on death's door.
johntiger1··on US surgeons perform first whole eye transplant
To each their own. From a purely objective standpoint, I hope you or a loved one don't need a liver transplant one day (and consent to receiving one).
