johnward··on PoweredByGPT: Find products built with OpenAI's GPT
Payment is either broken or a scam. Unsure. It gives what looks like a stripe error. Payment processor is on a Somalian domain and the contact page links to a Nigerian twitter account. Payment company claims to be Belgian. Both this site and the payment site domains have private whois info. Very suspect.
johnward··on I lost $209k of my own money trying to start a business
Betting on black probably has a higher success rate than the average startup though.
johnward··on AI will replace middle management before robots replace hourly workers
I worked for the Watson group. It was largely a marketing play which did land with some enterprises but is ultimately a failure because the tech was not there.
johnward··on Slack is down for some users
I love slack. Slack search is terrible for me, but maybe it's the quality of data it has to search through.
johnward··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2021)
Moveworks | Mountain View, CA | ONSITE or REMOTE (some positions)

johnward··on IBM has cut its blockchain team down to almost nothing – sources
I'm not sure that IBM leadership really understands what direction they want to go. They seem to pivot all-in on a tech sector and then abandon it a few years later. Rinse and repeat. It was AI/Watson, then a cloud platform, now its "hybrid cloud" because they can't compete with the established cloud providers. What will be the all-in bet next week? I also have to mention their strategy of trying to cut their way to prosperity.
johnward··on What Happened to XPath?
I do a bunch of of XML/XSLT work still. I use XPATH 1.0 basically everyday. It's also awesome for web scraping. Overall, it's a great tool that doesn't get a ton of exposure.
johnward··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
> Living somewhere expensive (within your country) seems like a lifestyle choice like any other.

Right. I'm really looking to be able to drive a Tesla and vacation several times a year on remote tropical islands. Should my company pay me more for that choice?

johnward··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
This is great news. I wish worker pay was more based on the value they provide versus where they decide to live. If you're making $200k in the valley and you decide to move to Ohio, why are you suddenly worth less to the company? If everyone goes remote you no longer have to live in a high cost of living area. If you choose to that's on you.
johnward··on Media buyer: Facebook updates have ‘wrecked the ad platform on the backend’
Really? I had some decent success on FB early but not now. I also made a killing when MySpace launched it's terrible ad service.
johnward··on Media buyer: Facebook updates have ‘wrecked the ad platform on the backend’
> hey also ban you by default, assuming,

I think I had my account banned the last 3 times I created a new ad. None were against their policies. My account go reinstated each time but still.

johnward··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
Not only will they save money on office space but many of these companies are requiring employees to take pay cuts if they move to a lower cost area. Like all the sudden your value to the company changes because you moved?
johnward··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
> But if you're single, staying cooped up alone at home can be a disaster.

During COVID I would say this is more of a problem but in my 8 years of remote work I don't really miss the office at all. In normal times you can get out if you want to head to a coffee shop or something. We do video calls which seems to help some of the team members feel better about the situation. Having a commute was absolutely the most stressful thing for me.

I do most of my socializing outside of working hours. Being alone and remote doesn't seem to effect me but I'm also super introverted. I understand this may effect extroverts differently.

johnward··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
> which is problematic for building teams and culture;

Why? I've been remote for about 8 years. I don't think I've had any problems building relationships. The only thing you miss from the office is the time spent screwing around with co-workers. I guess you could consider that "Team building".

johnward··on IBM is splitting itself into two public companies
I think that's what they attempted to do with Watson and Watson Health, but it didn't take off the way they were hoping. It seems like they were early in the "AI" space.
johnward··on IBM is splitting itself into two public companies
Their legal team is pretty good?
johnward··on IBM is splitting itself into two public companies
Speaking as a former IBMer. I understand IBM wanting to be a player in the cloud space but I'm not sure they ever will be. Like who seriously uses IBM Cloud? I know some big corps probably accidentally get IBM cloud credits with their large IBM contracts but does anyone actually choose IBM in this space?
johnward··on Roof blows off new Tesla Model Y
They don't. Tesla has stores that are company owned. Dealerships are a franchise system from what I understand.
johnward··on Leaving Mozilla
Man when I was at IBM I had to buy a Watson shirt.
johnward··on Leaving Mozilla

johnward··on U.S. House's antitrust report hints at break-up of big tech firms: lawmaker
I do wonder what breaking up large US tech corporations does to the competitiveness of the US on the world scale.
johnward··on Facebook sues two Chrome extension makers for scraping user data
For those that don't know, there was a public case about the legality of scraping involving HiQ and LinkedIn (https://www.forbes.com/sites/emmawoollacott/2019/09/10/linke...)

TL;DR; It was considered to be legal because HiQ were scraping public profiles.

This case may be a little bit different because these scrapers seem to target both public and private data.

Also see: https://medium.com/@tjwaterman99/web-scraping-is-now-legal-6... (which mentions a facebook example very similar to this)

johnward··on Employee works for both Google and Facebook from home
This was has been my experience with other firms like IBM. I remember it being stated in my employment agreement that I needed permission to work a second job. It even limited your open source exposure. Whether it could be legally enforced is a different matter.
johnward··on Manually verified job salaries/offers in Artificial Intelligence
I would have thought these companies paid a better base salary being in such a high cost area.

Also, do FAANGs typically grant more equity after the 4 year vesting period?

johnward··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
Yep analytics is experiencing issues for me.
johnward··on Mark in the Middle
I'm not sure where they get their data but this list is usually like %70 conservative media figures. https://twitter.com/FacebooksTop10
johnward··on How I learned to charge my customers
Usually more than double.
johnward··on How I learned to charge my customers
Some anecdotal stats from my experience being a consultant with both megacorps and smaller gov contractor. The hourly rate is about $200 an hour on average. This is for a senior, highly specialized, engineer type role. Megacorp paid me about $60 per hour where the smaller firms paid me closer to $80. Both as an employee with benefits. When I first joined a startup we would go as low as $120 per hour and pay $30 an hour too a junior/mid level consultant.

I'm sure someone super specialized and in a hot market could get up to $300 an hour if they are delivering value.

johnward··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
> Reddit was 5x cheaper than the next cheapest source

I applaud anyone that can monetize the reddit audience. I've dabbled in their ad platform and had no luck at all.
