jojo14··on Bill Gates's Personal Easter Eggs in 8 Bit BASIC (2008)
I don't hate Micro-soft however I like the truth. Do you know the BASIC was open source ? Wikipedia is your friend.
jojo14··on Bill Gates's Personal Easter Eggs in 8 Bit BASIC (2008)
I wouldn't call that an easter egg. IMHO it's rather a backdoor. A covert method to gain access to information about the system. Indeed what is the benefit to the user? No need to feed the mythology about BG. He was not a developer. Period.
jojo14··on An Introduction to Modern CMake
Scons is very easy and readable yet very powerful. It is Python based and extensible.

jojo14··on I Like Makefiles
If you like Makefiles you should try Scons: https://scons.org/
jojo14··on xdg-override: change default application temporarily on Linux
Thank you for sharing :-) Your script is simple, yet effective. If you plan to modify it you might want to check shlex : https://docs.python.org/3/library/shlex.html#module-shlex
jojo14··on AMD Ryzen Master Utility for Overclocking Control
Where is the Linux version ?
jojo14··on Use the XDG Base Directory Specification
XDG specs are crap. Sure one single ~/.config folder is a very good idea. But I want it clearly visible such as ~/config. But I don't want an additional and confusing ~/.local.

Plus I don't want ~/Videos or ~/Pictures folders. I am not dumb. Let me organize my folders according to my needs and my will.

The first thing I do when I setup a user account is removing those useless XDG folders.

XDG pretend to remove folder clusterfuck then why do they add their crappy folders?

jojo14··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
I use Vim infrequently. I know it and if it was the only option I'd be efficient with it. I've even started with Vi as the only option. However I prefer Emacs because I feel way more efficient and comfortable with it. As a bonus main key bindings are consistent with Bash and others GNU tools. The course should introduce Emacs as well so that students can choose on their own. Whatever your preferred editor is IMHO it is up to an IDE to integrate with it.
jojo14··on Ruby 3.2’s YJIT is Production-Ready
If an AI were meant to write code it would be Python. That is english with very few syntactic sugar mainly parens and colons.

Unless the result wouldn't be meant to be read nor understood by anyone.

IMHO Python is the closest to pseudo-code specifications.

jojo14··on How many Linux commands can a 7 year old learn?
This is not quite surprising as I experienced a few times that kids understand pretty well a CLI rather than a GUI. As soon as they can read the concept of a REPL is rather straightforward for many so called computer "illiterates". Say something to the computer through writing it on the keyboard then wait for the processing of it and finally see the result displayed on the screen. Plus the history of commands is also very intuitive. Is it because it's all based on natural language faculties that we all possess as soon as we are born?
jojo14··on Apple Imagines Mac-Inside-a-Keyboard Device Evocative of 80s Home Computers
Make it more like a laptop whiteout a screen but with a full sized trackpad and I will buy it !
jojo14··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
"before the user perceives a delay": I agree with you.

For any UX/UI designer out there a delay is perceived when it is greater than 200ms. Those are milliseconds.

jojo14··on Flynt: Convert old Python string formatting to f-strings
I don't mean to be rude, but what is the point ?

AFAIK the % operator is not deprecated. In fact % formatting being syntactically near identical to C is a feature to me. I use format strings as well depending on context.

% formatting being older doesn't mean it's obsolete.

That said it is cool to design a script to transform your code and any time you spent in the developing of automation is time earned.

jojo14··on YouTube-dl is now part of GitHub/dmca.git
Isn't it more like the following?:

  git clone https://github.com/github/dmca.git
  git fetch origin pull/8142/head
  git checkout FETCH_HEAD
jojo14··on Python for Kids: A Comprehensive Python Development Tutorial for Kids
I remember how as a little boy I was instantly hooked on my father's Dragon32 and its BASIC interpreter.

A screen plus keyboard plus an instant-on Micropython board setup would be very appealing to children.

jojo14··on Mtime Comparison Considered Harmful (2018)
Try scons then: https://scons.org/
jojo14··on Firefox 81.0
Firefox is my browser of choice and I gladly appreciate much of the improvement the devs put in it. However under Linux an improvement would be to get rid of Pulseaudio and to directly interface with ALSA. The benefit would be that installing FF wouldn't require unwanted dependencies and audio quality would be improved.
jojo14··on Pi-hole 5.0
Dear Pi-hole devs & maintainers: thank you very much !
jojo14··on Writing a Book with Pandoc, Make, and Vim
Nice article. I'm all for it ! I use Pandoc and Makefile as well. Except I use Emacs and Inkscape for SVG graphics. IMHO this is the way to produce documents in the 21st century.
jojo14··on Heineken WOBO: A Beer Bottle That Doubles as a Brick
From design point of view this is cool. However it is just a lame PR story. First glass is one of the rare materials that is nearly 100% recyclable it would be a shame to sore it as construction material. Second beer vendors way prefer aluminum which is way toxic for the environment but also remarkably recyclable. The best materials are those not produced furthermore those not littered. Why Heineken just don't fund garbage collector in such areas ? Why not an incentive when people return used bottles or others wastes ?
jojo14··on A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Asynchronous Programming
I for one have always thought that keeping things synchronous based on select() is a better intellectual discipline and less error prone. Only in few cases you are forced to use asynchronous programming. However that's not why I comment here.

I just want to inform that "yield from" and "@coroutine" are now deprecated. So the article needs a bit of an update:

Note: Support for generator-based coroutines is deprecated and is scheduled for removal in Python 3.10.

jojo14··on Bill Gates in Byte Magazine: The Future of Software Design (1983)
"Really forward-thinking"? All of what Bill Gates "envisioned" in this 1983 article was already done or about to be done at that time. Gates is well known for being bad at prediction and for having no vision to imagine the future. It certainly is not the reason why Microsoft kind of "succeeded". No need to rewrite history.
jojo14··on This isn't your father's Microsoft
I'm kind of puzzled by this fanboism about "a new MS happening now". The new propaganda is along: "Hey! reset everything you know about MS. The new MS is shiny!". Why would anybody support MS without being a shareholder or without having any financial interest. Given their proven track record it would be pretty obvious to be cautious about MS. IMHO MS have all the reasons to be doomed. They are way behind technically in key CS areas: HPC, Mobile, embedded, etc. Their flagship OS is FUBAR due to 2 decades of accumulated bloat. Anyway we might envision a future for MS as a profitable business: Embrace 21st century standards, port their SW on *nix(es) and make profit on their core competencies: that is developing boring non innovative SW for big companies.
jojo14··on This isn't your father's Microsoft
To be fair BASIC was not much of a deal. The interpreter is just a REPL. Very basic at it, hence the name. The BASIC was not invented by MS: they replicated it. The real operating system part was done by computer manufacturers. For instance it was Dragon Data that brought the "kind of" OS routines in the Dragon32. Floppy disk managment, I/O, etc. MS just brought the REPL and ... bugs.
jojo14··on VW’s $50B Bet on an Electric Hatchback
This is vaporware. VW are stuck. They are not able to innovate. VW EVs are always tomorrow, whereas actual manufacturers do deliver EVs now : Nissan and Renault besides Tesla.
jojo14··on Git rebase in depth
I agree with you, yet I don't understand why you were downvoted. I think git-rebase proponents haven't really ever worked in a professional environment particularly with several co-workers. I as a project manager would not trust a "rebaser" and I would question the time he spent to rewrite the git history. It is granted Merge and rebase need the same amount of reading the code and merging the differences. However with git-rebase there is the added cost of beautifying the history. Which means at least 2 drawbacks : one is the cost the other is more about memory. About cost, what is the point of rewriting the history when you have a (great) tool to janitor it. Then the git history automatically reflects the project history. If the git history is rewritten how would people remember the order of commits in case bugs occur. When did the bug happen ? Who should correct it ? IMHO those questions are more fundamental than a straight line of bullets in gitk.
