jol··on Create JavaScript, CSS Interactions With Zero Lines of Code
Works fine on FF on Ubuntu 28.
jol··on How the Best CEOs Get the Most Out of Every Day
That is actually very important, there is just too many people that cannot communicate efficiently over email, it wastes not only their time, it wastes everyone's time. (I agree that "be xxx ninja" is not nice language, but still...
jol··on E-mail didn't really evolve since Gmail. Why is it so hard to innovate?
for me: what is that "a lot more"? I just want to learn something new (btw, labels/tags are not really new, just redesigned imap folders)
jol··on How pCell works and why its a bigger deal than anyone realizes
Sorry to rain on your parade, but don't you like idea that computing device is independent from others and does not require network connectivity 100% of time when you want something done?
jol··on Why we love Mozilla Persona
If Identity Provider goes down, it is a SPOF for the account, but the same is with FB/Twitter login
jol··on Why we love Mozilla Persona
technically - yes, it frees me from being part of (google/fb/twitter... whatever network is trendy now) and still sign in, practically,at the present moment, no - only geeks know about it

Edit/update: if compromised, you loose all linked accounts, however, with google/fb/.... it is the same, but this is less leaky to 3rd party, if this comes as default login, then we would have only a dozen of logins (persona/email, + important accounts, e.g. banking something similar... ), not ~100 of them, thus resetting 100 passwords is just 1 action

jol··on How my “impractical” humanities degree prepared me for a career in programming
I agree with that, this requires certain mindset and skill, however I have seen some dismissing attitude from HR "specialists" and alike while real world seems to be quite different
jol··on How my “impractical” humanities degree prepared me for a career in programming
I have very good economics/management degree from cool school in my country/country group, however, it makes me much better person in IT than persons with good education in the field, why? Because I care and understand much more about processes and people behind code written than average IT guy, also - I'm much more inclined to do my "homework" (research) and make solution for process not try fitting some idea in process thus making it awkward
jol··on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 pass 10% market share, Windows XP falls below 30%
because of network effects that will kick in when Linux finally reaches market share that has to be respected (I expect that to be somewhere close to 10 %), this is much more important. And now when Steam came to linux, that can be kickstarted, thus never say never :)
jol··on Google Acquires Boston Dynamics
I'm so glad to see that, that I am not the only person with such dual reaction - This is sooo awsomme tech! & ok, were it is going might not be so cool at the end...
jol··on How MySQL memory table saved the day
>"That table would entirely fit in InnoDB Buffer Pool " I would like to see how it fits in the pool on 2GB linode (mentioned in the article), also, I like that people try to think before saying "big data" and grabbing some NoSQL that is not very good fit in some places or gigantic mapreduce in 67 servers.
jol··on Ask HN: Why are hackers today so insecure?
With power comes responsibility, you should choose what to hack and why :)
jol··on The average top 1,000 web page has grown 150% in three years
you are right about first, but >- at least as reliable as your infrastructure this doesn't mean that Google CDN is down the same times that your server is, thus it adds downtime (or time when something is broken in the site), i.e. if your server doesn't work, nothing works, if your server works but CDN doesn't, again something is broken and if this time doesn't overlap, it is just additional risk, even if tiny one. Also, what happens when Google decides to charge for use of the CDN?
jol··on The average top 1,000 web page has grown 150% in three years
well, that would not work well with backwards compatibility, also it adds extra protocol to implement to browser vendors (extra bugs, here they come :)
jol··on The average top 1,000 web page has grown 150% in three years
I don't think that CSS sprites should be bigger, given that css is improving, I don't know about the sample analysed, but usually the editorial and user-contributed content images (as well as ads) take much more bandwidth than style related images, unless the site has exotic design. aside: kranken.io is nice
jol··on The average top 1,000 web page has grown 150% in three years
I haven't seen one, but that would be very beneficial, it would not only make everything faster, but also avoid the privacy concerns and remove the additional point of failure that external CDN creates.
jol··on The average top 1,000 web page has grown 150% in three years
ok, but the article says that there is more images (btw, other media too), i.e. images make 50% of web page now and image size growth contibutes ~400KB out of ~900KB, images tend to change, given that top 1000 pages are dynamic, thus, no cache will help. Also I find it interesting that stylesheets are growing, given that css3 are more powerful now and IE6 is likely to be retired for most of these sites. What is interesting is what makes this "other" part? is it just webfonts or some media (also very cross-site cache friendly)?
jol··on The Enfield Thunderbolt: An electric car before its time
This is almost exactly what I thought - and just say me that EVs are not possible/practical, this was made in 70s, now think about the things that are possible now that was not even possible then for car producers.
jol··on What is wrong with this message?
Exactly, G+ Twitter, FB are content exchanges with value added in form of comments and discovery in my opinion, not content creation places. P.s. Google returns 404 on his G+ profile, is it correct http code? Shouldn't it be something from 5 while case is being resolved at least?
jol··on Martini: Classy web development in Go
This one was good, I don't know if there is sound as I watched it silently, but it was perfect even without it.

Im hooked, likely to start learning go soon. P.s. Big respect for being able to make the video below 3 min.

jol··on 'Killer robots' ban must be part of Geneva talks, says campaign group
> Requiring a human to be in the loop in all circumstances is impractical At least theoretically someone made the decision to kill and could be accountable, in case of killer robot with AI that decided to kill mistakenly who is responsible?
jol··on If Gmail were built with Drupal
there is a difference between an web-app and web-site, drupal is a CMS, it is meant to build web-sites. Or am I wrong about what drupal is? This is the same as tons of people that use wordpress as the best CMS, wordpress is good fit for many of those cases, but not all
jol··on Samsung, Nokia say they don’t know how to track a powered-down phone
how about Faraday cage for your phone?
jol··on Nonplussed
I don't know but I have a feeling that the hippies are leaving Google, thus the quality goes down. That is why I never comment on youtube - I cannot do it anonymously, if its cat video. But the problems started on other products too. And my sample size of people that start to dislike google services have increased recently by fair share of average Joe type users that now find them much harder to use than before
jol··on First sign that humanity is slowing its carbon surge
If we are talking about changing something I the way people in the whole world acts, it takes a lot of time, the talks started long long ago, finally we see some result of this. There is a lot of "greener" technologies developed now and in past 2-3 years that soon will become mainstream, thus making us all closer to the goal
jol··on Google Apps drop support for IE9
I think the thing is that there is forgotten and hated windows vista, that can update only to IE9, thus leaving it as smallest common denominator after XP end of life.
jol··on After traffic stop, man forced to have x-ray, enema, anal probes and colonoscopy
What about persons outside US? the thing is that wile this does not directly influence, there are at least discussion about ethics of this and whether this really right action, thus at least (all else held constant) decreasing pool of IT professionals that are willing to support this with their labor. As side note, this surveillance should not be just noted and forgotten.

Most of comments are not much political. (i.e. I see them as discussion of ethics/morales, not as person/party x agenda pushing/discussion)

jol··on After traffic stop, man forced to have x-ray, enema, anal probes and colonoscopy
>Just like the NSA, stop bringing up stuff everyone knows. Google reader shutdown, ok, many geeks used it, there is alternatives.. blablabla.

But are you saying that NSA spying on everyone should be just another minor fact, I don't get it. Doesn't it seem wrong to you that someone is listening to ALL your digital communications/actions?

jol··on In Latvia, young people discover new passions in bad economic times
The thing is that some form of genocide was carried out during soviet times, thus suppressing development of the nations intelligence, with many from the best and brightest being deported/surpressed etc. Westerners usually does not understand that what ended in the West after WWII did not end in the Baltic states, it continued, just in a bit "softer" form. Yes, it was not war, but it was not actual peace either.
jol··on Web Framework Benchmarks Round 7
Actually I was quite surprised that multiple queries benchmark showed more than 1 entry for PHP in top 10. take-away: if you don't do much sophisticated data processing then PHP is ok choice. gets ready to run
