jonas_b··on AI assisted search-based research works now
A common google searching thing I counter have is something like this:

I need to get from A to B via C via public transport in a big metropolis.

Now C could be one of say 5 different locations of a bank branch, electronics retailer, blood test lab or whatever, so there's multiple ways of going about this.

I would like a chatbot solution that compares all the different options and lays them out ranked by time from A to B. Is this doable today?

jonas_b··on Practical SQL for Data Analysis
Question, if I have a CSV file that I'd like to do some quick SQL queries on before moving the results into Pandas. What would be good resource to do this? Preferably compatible with the rest of the Python-dataframe ecosystem and as simple as pd.read_csv()

Congratulations guys. I met two of you when you visited our agency and told your story. Very impressive, and for those of you reading, these guys were still in high-school when we met them, maybe still are? Stoked that you got into YC!!

- The guy presenting this might be wrong. - He may be an asshole and/or have resentful intentions with making this presentations.

However, none of the people who disagree with him in this article engage with any of these things. They're just angry that he's saying this at all! Their upset emotions seems to be the only case against what he's saying.

jonas_b··on The Slave Ship That Ran from Kerala to New Orleans
As someone who lived in Kochi for six months in 2004 when I was 19, I find this really interesting.

Do you live there now?

I remember we were going to leave Kochi and go for a trip to Munnar (the hills where all the spices grow and tea estates are), but on that day the labor unions had declared 'hartal', which was somekind of statewide halt which meant that if you were driving on the road that day, it was open season for people to throw rocks at your car.

Our guide just wiggled his head, smiled and said that we'd be fine :) And we were. Saw no signs of rock-thowers by the road. But instead our chauffeur drove like a maniac up those hills in that old Ambassador, and I didn't have any medical insurance at that time. That's when I learned the art of praying :D

jonas_b··on Intestinal bacteria may influence our moods
No expert on the topic, though it really interests me. Have been drinking EM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_microorganism) every day for the past 6 months which has improved my digestion a lot.

Thought this comment on the NPR article was really insightful:

There's so much more to developing a healthy microbiome than just eating yogurt and drinking kombucha, as many people like to claim. It starts at birth. As you travel through the birth canal, you come into contact with many different and important microorganisms through contact with your mother's vaginal fluids and even fecal matter. If you're born via C section, you're starting out at a disadvantage. Then breastfeeding is the next step. Mother's milk is where you get your next dose of a very broad spectrum of microorganisms. Then throughout life, as you come in contact with other people, you eat dirt, you hang around farm animals, etc, these are all mother nature's way of helping you develop that microbiome, which is essentially the core of your immune system. Eating is important too, and one of the biggest problems with our modern food system is that everything is pasteurized, cooked all the way through, sterilized, irradiated, etc. All of the healthy microorganisms that used to exist are being killed.

So the point here is that people need to rethink many of their lifestyle choices if they want to heal their guts. Every time you take an antibiotic, you likely suffer much collateral damage because you may be permanently killing beneficial species that you may never be exposed to again. They don't exist in yogurt or kombucha. Either that, or consider fecal bacteriotherapy (fecal transplants) since it seems to be one of the the most promising new approaches to healing microbiomes. ~Julie Latham

jonas_b··on Why I Don’t Do CrossFit
FWIW. Here in Oslo, everyone has to do a weekend-intro just to become a member. And instructors are here are really thorough. Other than getting a personal trainer, I don't see how you could get more attention/correction than going to entry-level workout at my gym.
jonas_b··on Ask HN: What's your greatest epiphany?
I work in customer service for a sub-unit of a large telco. When people run into annying issues, I am kind of at liberty to issue a refund if I want to, sort of to please the customer and make them stay with us.

However most people don't ask for it. So only the ones who take the time to ask for it and write two sentences of why they should receive one get it.

jonas_b··on BMW shows off 'drifting' self-drive cars
Anybody know if self-driving cars can distinguish between safe and unsafe object; say a big stuffed animal, and a rock in the middle of the road. Would they make big maneuvers to avoid both?

I would guess that he refers to moving somewhere to get a good internet connection. Fiber has become increasingly available the past 2-3yrs. This article says that, as of 2011, 49% of Swedish household could sign up for internet speeds of least 100mb/s [1].

jonas_b··on Get To The Point First
I was a volunteer last summer at place which arranged a number of festivals, and together with a professional sysadmin I helped maintain their booking system, internet cafe, random stuff etc.

The atmosphere was pretty relaxed to start off with, but the sysadmin I worked with suggested that we would take it to the next level: Every morning we would walk around the office and give everyone sitting by a computer a five minute massage. During this time we bonded with them physically, asked them about their day and if there was anything we could help them with. The "results" were amazing. I have never become friends with so many people so quickly, and have never had customers so polite. Like the time when I accidentally erased all emails from the IMAP server, they just smiled and said: Don't worry, they'll just have to mail us again.

I guess my point is that I agree with the OP, but if you have made a strong emotional connection, the words you chose are less important. They will love you anyway.

jonas_b··on Docverse bought by Google
One would have thought that MS would have been the obvious acquirer. Congrats on Google though. I have used GDocs for all my school papers recently and use Office 2007 only just before hand in to get the proper formatting of the document. I think with this acquisition, they will get even closer to eating Microsoft's office suite cake.

An idea on content micro-payments that just came into my head:

Let's say that you are a user that wants to contribute $10/mo for all the good blogs and content that you consumer online. You go to paymentstartup.com which puts a cookie in your browser. All content providers that wants money from paymentstartup.com users will add a tracker to their website that will report to paymentstartup.com whenever somebody has visited their blog ir whatever. Then, by the end of the month, you might have visited 50 blogs so paymentstartup.com splits your contribution among these sites using some smart algorithm.

What do you think?
