jonnypotty··on Jimi Hendrix was a systems engineer
Why is that pic labelled with the wrong names? Pretty sure that isn't Mitch and Noel.
jonnypotty··on Everything – Locate files and folders by name instantly

jonnypotty··on Writing a basic Linux device driver when you know nothing about Linux drivers
Thanks for this. Good read and also kinda inspiring.
jonnypotty··on Preparing for when the machine stops
The problem comes when no one knows how to grow a potato any more, not when most people don't.
jonnypotty··on Delphi Is 30
The IDE is much nicer these days
jonnypotty··on The muscular imagination of Iain M. Banks: a future you might want
The way I interpret the philosophy of the minds is a bit different.

Some seem to conform to your analysis here, but many seem deeply compassionate toward the human condition. I always felt like part of what banks was saying was that, no matter the level of intelligence, humanity and morality had some deep truths that were hard to totally trancend. And that a humam perspective could be useful and maybe even insightful even in the face of vast unimaginable intelligence. Or maybe that wisdom was accessible to lower life forms than the minds.

jonnypotty··on You should make a new programming language
All depends on what you value, really.
jonnypotty··on Delphi 11 Community Edition
A large proportion of the UKs independent bookshops run on a delphi developed system.
jonnypotty··on The Windows desktop is dying
I'd rather kill myself than pay Microsoft $41 a month for windows 11 - let alone windows 12, whatever amazing pile of shit that turns out to be - especially when it CANT respond in less than 100ms to anything. My god. At least it means someone will have to do something better.
jonnypotty··on 62 People own the same as half the world, reveals Oxfam Davos report (2016)
The person writing this article is almost definitely part of the 1%. Who cares what gender the 62 richest people in the world are; these people cannot be the victims of inequality. What evidence is presented here that says "if rich people earnt less then poor people would earn more" which is the obvious inference. It is intuitive but is it true? If rich people pay more tax this doesn't get given to poor people as wages, so how does the tax question relate to the poverty issue? I agree that more tax revenue is good as it pays for better public services but there isn't any talk of 'wealth' provided by public services being part of the discussion.
jonnypotty··on Ask HN: Does anyone else think SQL needs help?
I wish programming was easier sometimes too.
jonnypotty··on Photos Always Pointing at the Pointer (2012)
Why do I find this so funny? Good work. Thanks.
jonnypotty··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
You can't just guess at which 25 percent of your employees not to pay.
jonnypotty··on The saddest “just ship it” story (2020)
Shit man. That sucks.
jonnypotty··on The Onion has been permanently banned from Twitter
Corporate comedy minimising the importance of censorship is always the funniest.
jonnypotty··on Ceephax Acid Crew
And people covered in shit falling backwards out of toilets as I remember. Not gonna forget that in a hurry.
jonnypotty··on Ceephax Acid Crew
People on hn talking about bangface. Things I didn't see coming.
jonnypotty··on Who keeps an eye on clipboard access?
I used to support a terminal services/citrix environment and we had repeated instances of people trying to copy and paste data and getting other peoples data. Never got anywhere investigating and boss refused to go to Microsoft. I'd forgotten about it till I read this.
jonnypotty··on Calc.exe is now open source; there’s surprising depth in its ancient code (2019)
Oh, haha, well at least you're consistent.
jonnypotty··on Calc.exe is now open source; there’s surprising depth in its ancient code (2019)
Code is a way to define a series of logical steps that can be performed using binary logic. This hasn't changed in 70 years.

Expecting code from the past to be "worse" is like expecting math from the past to be worse.

jonnypotty··on Calc.exe is now open source; there’s surprising depth in its ancient code (2019)
Came here to say exactly this. There is so much arrogance in our industry, why would code from the past be worse?
jonnypotty··on New details on military UFO sightings
Why do you think the idea of aliens is supernatural?
jonnypotty··on New details on military UFO sightings
I didn't mean it to come across like that. I just think the disinformation has worked. Power told us that the "UFO phenomenon" is a ridiculous conspiracy, humans have little to no defence against something like this and virtually everyone bought it. I'm just desperate for serious science to look at it, that's all. I'm not scoffing at anyone - I understand why this is so difficult to take seriously.
jonnypotty··on New details on military UFO sightings
The most likely explanation (not saying I'm right) most likely as far as I can see is aliens, by a mile. Have you seen what these objects do? How they move. Verified by multiple sources and electronic equipment. Ima stick my neck out and say "wow that looks like aliens!" becuase it does and I don't really care if I turn out to be wrong. Something real, amazing, and not understood is going on. I simply don't understand why everyone hasn't got their jaw on the floor.
jonnypotty··on New details on military UFO sightings
Please scientists, investigate and stop laughing at UFOs cos one day history is going to laugh at you.
jonnypotty··on CUPID – the back story
So becuase our industry is so unprofessional that you can literally point to loads of it and say "that has cost humanity billions", this entire argument is stupid and actually there is no problem at all?

Not sure that's the right attitude.

jonnypotty··on CUPID – the back story
I think it's saying simple, dogmatic rules aren't a good idea and don't reduce complexity. Trusting a dev to not write functions that are unreasonably complex IS a good rule if you spend the time to check and review code.

Fitting your code around a load of "best practices" will basically always increase complexity because you've expanded the list of requirements the code has to conform to.

jonnypotty··on Calling for public input on our approach to world leaders
Oh sod off twitter, don't pretend you care what the public think.
jonnypotty··on NFTP, the World’s First Non-Fungible Toilet Paper
