jonplackett··on I Returned My iPhone Duo
I think this will be different - you already have to include screenshots specifically for iPhone duo. I can easily see Apple just rejecting iPhone apps that don’t support it properly.
jonplackett··on I Returned My iPhone Duo
Still waiting for my Duo so I have no authority really but…

Complaining about app support in the first week of release is silly. It will obviously get better very fast. Apple will force developers to make all new updates work well.

jonplackett··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
That sounds fun. What do you mean?
jonplackett··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
It literally all gets transferred with the backup.

I went from an m1 MacBook to m5 earlier this year. It was almost too smooth - I just felt like I had the same computer and not a new one. Which in a way was disappointing.

jonplackett··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
You haven’t tried upgrading recently. It is incredibly easy.
jonplackett··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I was expecting there to be more like a ‘studio mode’ where you can fold it over to make it a screen interface that has some kind of bigger iPad style Ui. Where you could also use a stylus.

Basically a product for the people currently carrying around a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro.

Just touch on a laptop screen makes no sense. I’ve never felt the need to do this.

jonplackett··on GPT-6.1 Terra
This makes a lot of sense.

It’s probably just unavoidable. Like when Apple release a new MacBook Air first and it is (in some ways) faster than the old MacBook Pro.

I think the planets thing is a bit confusing though. I hadn’t really thought about it being based on the size of the planet. I assumed it was based on how far away they were with terra therefore being the base one.

jonplackett··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
This is literally an ad for ModelCompare.

The link to ask yourself is a frikkin sign up link.

Downvote.

jonplackett··on Claude Duet
If only someone had invented a way to easily make great websites automatically? Ah well, I guess that’s just a pipe dream.
jonplackett··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
Xi gave a speech about it a while ago. The idea is that ai should increase productivity for the whole economy not just centralise it in 2 or 3 ai companies.

Of course screwing over America’s crown jewel companies is a helpful side effect.

jonplackett··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
Probably because it’s a discussion about DeepSeek and you didn’t include that in your comparison so it came off a bit big-lab-fan
jonplackett··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
What still is true for all fields of LLMs: if you can’t tell they do it suboptimally, you are just not that knowledgable in that area.

It still applies to all things LLms can do from law to code to art to ideas.

They can do it - and very acceptably - but only to the untrained eye.

jonplackett··on Dogs seem to agree with humans that 'bouba' is round and 'kiki' is spiky
I don’t really get why this is surprising.

If you just looked at the sound wave of these being spoken you’d see one is more skirt than the other.

Even the letter b is more sounded than the letter k

jonplackett··on GLP-1 may slow biological aging
You know what else slows aging? Eating properly and exercise.
jonplackett··on Krea 3 – An image model built for editing at scale
Today’s email:

“Your discount expired, here is one more at 40%”

It’s almost as if the expiration was just some kind of pressure marketing trick….

jonplackett··on Krea 3 – An image model built for editing at scale
I’ve now received several emails with ‘limited time buy now’ offers. With count down timers.

I really don’t get it. It’s like they’re run by Temu.

The few generations I did looked promising but their whole vibe is just sell sell and feels so cheap.

jonplackett··on Krea 3 – An image model built for editing at scale
2 images to try and then the only option after is a monthly subscription.

I don’t mind buying credits but I don’t want a subscription.

jonplackett··on Catch a Bird – I made it for my own sanity
This is lovely. And also quite clever in the mechanic - as well as being beautiful it makes abuse by ‘the internet’ which is always so inevitable with any open message posting, not very rewarding since it just comes and goes.
jonplackett··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
It would be funnier in a way if this is true and that all they do there now is ‘ask the model’ about all problems.
jonplackett··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
It’s the criminals that you don’t catch that you have to worry about.

The fact that even this incompetent dude most likely still made off with some secrets means I’m sure some better trained ones got/are continuing to get a few more.

jonplackett··on Apple HomeView
So it’s an iPad with no battery / smart home powered by what is still a terrible voice assistant.

Hard pass

jonplackett··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
It gets very attached to itself
jonplackett··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
It’s extremely ironic that the software that’s meant to end software is itself pretty terrible software.
jonplackett··on Talorys – A self-hosted personal AI agent on Cloudflare's free tier
Because the Cloudflare hosting is just a choice. You can change it easily.

The self hosted part is about the ai provider.

Again. This is obvious.

jonplackett··on Talorys – A self-hosted personal AI agent on Cloudflare's free tier
Yeah completely agree. Jeez someone made something cool.

It’s self hosted as in not by an ai provider. This is obvious.

Sure it’s set up to run on some infrastructure but just tweak it if you want to and stop complaining.

jonplackett··on Claude Haiku 5.5
About pelicans on bicycles.

And then just and recursive loop

jonplackett··on Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt in Rust and released it as OSS
What do you think comes next instead?
jonplackett··on Claude Haiku 5.5
Pelican on a tricycle?

Two pelicans on a tandem?

jonplackett··on Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt in Rust and released it as OSS
Are we getting to the point (in a few years maybe?) where software will have its Suno moment where there is no need to actually pre-create it on some occasions.

It’s just created when required and personalised to exactly that use case. Then either reused or just discarded.

That is a weird world if so.

Or maybe we all have our own personalised version of photoshop that Adobe allow you to modify and still keep paying them.

jonplackett··on Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt in Rust and released it as OSS
When they say ‘clean room’. What do they mean by that exactly?

It wouldn’t have access to the actual code anyway. Do they mean they just describe all the features? Not even screen shots?

I guess each model now knows all the menus and what photoshop does really well anyway from the computer use training.
