jordanb··on Space company is betting its future on a propellant available everywhere
I think hydrogen it a pretty poor coolant anyway. They could presumably use a mixed fuel or use an inert gas like argon for cooling.

If they wanted to be "fuel rich" they could just release some excess oxygen as process waste.

So that's not why this is a dumb idea

The reason this is a dumb idea is because eloctrolysis is the hardest and least efficient way to get hydrogen.

And also because hydrogen is a really hard gas to store and handle, which is why every hydrogen effort going back to the Bush administration has failed.

jordanb··on Sam Altman: All the RAM Should Belong to Me, So I Can Charge People to Use It
No we understand his point.

His point is the highest and best use of the chips is to be full of model weights predicting the next word 24/7 instead of maybe being in a laptop that's off or underutilized sometimes.

It just so happens that the highest and best use is also what makes him the most money.

Nevermind the fact that there was no RAM shortage before he and his buddies decided to hyperscale their word guessers.

It'd be a bit like if an almond farmer came to a town with plenty of water, used up all the water growing almonds, and then tried to argue that growing food for everyone is a higher and better use than townfolk taking baths or watering their vegetable gardens.

It's not just ideologically bankrupt utilitarianism, it's ideologically bankrupt self serving utilitarianism.

jordanb··on Landline phones will switch off across Britland in 100 days, no extensions
"Best effort" is below rigorous QoS specifications though. Saying "99.999% of calls must complete" with a rigorous definition of completion is different than saying "best effort".
jordanb··on Landline phones will switch off across Britland in 100 days, no extensions
An interesting component of the switching off of POTS is that the quality of service requirements are different. POTS is regulated to require the phone company to maintain a certain legal quality of service with negative consequences for failing to do so.

Meanwhile, cell phone and VOIP services are "best effort."

The phone company put a pretty huge amount of effort into maintaining QoS (Lily Tomlin jokes aside) because there were consequences for not doing so. It makes sense that they would prefer to shed that responsibility.

jordanb··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth (2008)
Google lied when they said the pulled it from GNIS because they made the change manually at Trump's direction. They got caught lying because GNIS hadn't updated yet.
jordanb··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth (2008)
Google claimed that they pull from USGS and they had no control of the name.

But the USGS database (GNIS) did not update when Google (and Apple) changed the name. Google's claim that they pulled from GNIS was untrue

> techno-liberal/libertarian STEM side.

John Perry Barlow-esque techno libertarianism is dead.

Modern network state authoritarianism is unrecognizable from the perspective of old-style technolibertarians.

If you had told those people the modern silicon valley was working to build a Panopticon and sell it to the TLAs they would not have believed you!

jordanb··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
Why would it imply that it's inaccurate?

It being an ad does not imply that it's a lie.

In fact historically lieing in an ad could get you lawsuits or FTC complaints. I know creatives at agencies who would have to go through legal review to ensure every factual claim they made was true.

jordanb··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth (2008)
Google lied and claimed the change came from the USGS when the USGS metadata hadn't changed.

There exists no mechanism in the US for the president to force a private company to change the name of anything.

They did this to curry favor with the regime. It is naked sycophancy that shows exactly where the leadership of this company stands.

jordanb··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth (2008)
Tech companies spent decades trying to sell themselves as an enlightened class of nobel philosopher kings.

This going all the way back to John Perry Barlow and a utopia in cyberspace to escape the right wing world of Reagan and Thatcher. But it reached its zenith around the "Arab Spring" with the idea that through connecting people the tech companies were giving voice to the voiceless and creating a new world of participatory democracy.

Many of us developed an interest in technology substantially because of the promise they were selling

Yet then, the moment they received the tiniest bit of pushback they all threw in fully and enthusiastically with Trump and are now even facilitating the Right Wing Internationale as we see with the Zuck trying to silence Lula supporters in Brazil.

It's basically the mother of all rug pulls and yeah, people are a little sore

I honestly think that the whole Memphis/Colossus debacle is what lead to the datacenter backlash. Before then I'd just hear rumblings from people complaining about bitcoin miners, but data centers in general were not seen as an odious land use.

Then Elon goes to Memphis, buys a warehouse and fires up 30 jet turbines in the parking lot, and you start getting reports about the incessant noise and being able to smell it from 5 miles away.

It seems like there's a fundamental problem with realizing other people have agency and if you fuck them hard enough they will fight back.

jordanb··on Lula supporters protest against Meta to denounce its 'electoral interference'

jordanb··on CFPB Opens Debanking Investigation into Nine Large National Banks
Right so instead of enforcing the ECOA the CFPB will be used by this gangster president to go after institutions that wouldn't do business with his criminal associates

Yet another example if the collapsing rule of law in the American klepostate

jordanb··on CFPB Opens Debanking Investigation into Nine Large National Banks
Again "debanking" describes a lot of the ECOA violations the CFPB was previously investigating.
jordanb··on CFPB Opens Debanking Investigation into Nine Large National Banks
We'll see who Trump's CFPB actually stands up for. My guess is that it's not going to be "ordinary people payed in crypto" and entirely Jan 6ers, crypto scammers and criminals who paid the president bribes.

This is a good bet especially because his CFPB has already made an administrative rule change indicating that they will not be enforcing the ECOA anymore.

jordanb··on CFPB Opens Debanking Investigation into Nine Large National Banks
They did not "ignore debanking." CFPB was responsible for investigating violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which it did vigorously until its rules were rewritten in 2026 to essentially gut the law by agency rulemaking edict.

The whining about "debanking" was in reference to crypto companies that were being tied to illegal transactions, and Jan 6 insurrectionists.

As is typical for this administration, the hard day-in-day-out work of the CFPB has been gutted so regular Americans no longer have protection against predatory financial firms, and instead the agency is being used for a witch hunt against people who were following the actual laws of this country in ways that hurt this president or his friends

jordanb··on Dam removals are bringing fish back across the northeastern United States
There are far less dangerous dam designes. Again if you read the article or watch the video the weir creates a hydraulic "trap" downstream of it from which escape is essentially impossible.
jordanb··on Dam removals are bringing fish back across the northeastern United States
Many of these weirs are extremely dangerous to swimmers. When I was young there was an incident on a nearby weir (obsolete lowhead dam) where one person got trapped and drowned and then four people who jumped in to rescue him also drowned.

jordanb··on Tesla Roadster
> They shut down model x and s production to retool those Fremont lines for Optimus robots.

Another narrative that also fits the facts is that demand for their cars is so bad that they had to idle the X and S lines at that factory and they used Optimus as an excuse.

If demand was booming they'd set up a new facility to manufacture Optimus rather than dismantling a car factory

jordanb··on Tesla Roadster
This was a "the cybertruck will be a boat" style claim.

Clearly some time between 2018 and now he decided he'd have to actually have it done and ordered his people to make a stunt car with thrusters.
