jorge-d··on Jira Is Turing-Complete
Definitely, that's the issue with legacy tools and just plugging AI agents on top of existing API capabilities that were designed for human in the first place. Retrofitting agent-safety onto APIs that predate agents is harder than it looks (guardrails, permissions scopes etc.)

Disclosure: I'm CTO of an ITSM product in this space (Siit), so I think about this a lot.

jorge-d··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
This is wrong on so many levels. The German economy profits _a lot_ from the membership. You can't just look at the monetary in/out flows to/from EU accounts but to the system as a whole.
jorge-d··on Kafka is Fast – I'll use Postgres
Definitely, this is also one of the direction Rails is heading[1]: provide a basis setup most of the people can use out of the box. And if needed you can always plug in more "mature" solutions afterwards.

jorge-d··on Electromechanical reshaping, an alternative to laser eye surgery
From my experience it was hell of a whole week, specially the first 5 days. And every kind of light was aggressive for me. My eyesight took ~3 weeks to be able to read properly on screen without zooming 400%. I didn't freak out because my doctor told me that the healing process really depended on everyone's body. 2 years later I have absolutely not regrets from doing that surgery despite probably still always reminding myself as one of the worst week of my life during recovery.
jorge-d··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
I've been using nextdns.io (which seem to have founded this initiative) for a few years and it works pretty well for that
jorge-d··on The many ways tarrifs will hit electronics
You can get VAT refunded if you're only passing through [0]

jorge-d··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
It's even worse, they literally got their formula from a llm model (probably Grok?) => https://bsky.app/profile/dansinker.com/post/3llunnyfeoj2v

"To calculate reciprocal tariffs, import and export data from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2024. Parameter values for ε and φ were selected. The price elasticity of import demand, ε, was set at 4.

Recent evidence suggests the elasticity is near 2 in the long run (Boehm et al., 2023), but estimates of the elasticity vary. To be conservative, studies that find higher elasticities near 3-4 were drawn on. The elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs, φ, is 0.25."[0]

jorge-d··on Formaldehyde Causes More Cancer Than Any Other Toxic Air Pollutant
I was curious so I checked what is the state of the regulations in the EU and I found this: https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/news/chemicals-eu...

So yeah it's starting to be phased-out little by little but there is definitely the same exposure in here.

jorge-d··on Show HN: We built PriceLevel to find out what companies pay for SaaS
Love your "About Us" page
jorge-d··on GitHub is down
=> Nobody can never be trusted
jorge-d··on EU opens proceedings against X over efforts to combat information manipulation
It's also funny how every thread related to UE regulation turns into the UE being depicted a "no-free speech" / "corrupt" / "undemocratic" etc.

Yeah we're living in an absolute hellhole here in the UE, damn those institutions for trying to protect the general population against megacorps / missinformation. (/s)

It honestly feel more like the comment section on Youtube or Facebook sometimes around here.

jorge-d··on Mistral "Mixtral" 8x7B 32k model [magnet]
Well so far their business model seems to be mostly centered about raising money[1]. I do hope they succeed in becoming a succesful contender against OpenAI.

jorge-d··on New Requirements to Travel to Europe
If you can pay your plane ticket online I'm sure you can do so with the ETIAS as well.
jorge-d··on 54% of Portugal’s electricity is now generated by renewable energy
It's a nice looking map, I'm personally a big fan of https://app.electricitymaps.com/

I'm sure you could use the same datapoint to cover more zones (cf their Github repo https://github.com/electricitymaps/electricitymaps-contrib/b...)

jorge-d··on Disclosure of Pirates’ Identities “Compatible with EU Privacy Laws”
Ha yes the EU, that famous authoritarian regime !
jorge-d··on Why Sam Altman wants to scan two billion eyes
A few years ago most people would have said the same about fingerprint reading or face scanning, and yet we're living in a world where it is completely standard now
jorge-d··on Heroku Login and Deployment Down
Same issue here, I don't know what Salesforce is doing but it's the second issue in a week.
jorge-d··on Tell HN: Heroku crashes for new deploys
Yeah I also managed to run the web process without any issue:

```
heroku run bash -a myapp
$ bundle exec puma -C config/puma.rb
[All fine]
```

It's definitely coming from their router. Opened a ticket 1h ago without reply so far, and it makes you wonder why they even bother to have a status page.

jorge-d··on Tell HN: Heroku crashes for new deploys
Same here, both Staging and Production are completely down. Yet their statuspage shows no error at all.
jorge-d··on Mike Perham, Creator of Sidekiq: From Employment to Independence
Well Sidekiq is free to use. It's only the pro version that he charges and the free version code is open source.

I don't see the problem in having that kind of business model, it still allows the community to thrive and offers entreprises a way to have premium support.

Plus it allows him to invest more time in maintaining the free version.

jorge-d··on macOS CLI tool to configure multi-display resolutions and arrangements
+1 been using Spectacle for years and it work perfectly.

However I just saw that the project is no longer maintained as of... two days ago ! I guess I'll have to find an alternative down the road.

jorge-d··on Gasoline made of carbon sucked from the air (2018)
The reason it's not mainstream is most probably that the energy ratio between production and the output is terrible.

Also, technically, all hydrocarbons are made from Carbon sucked from the air.

jorge-d··on Ruby 3.2.0 is from another dimension
Are those projects of yours using Rails ?
jorge-d··on An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole
Worth mentioning that the free plan is well enough, been on it for the past 2 years on all my devices and never reached the paid quota!
jorge-d··on Paris mulls e-scooter ban in global test for micromobility industry
e-scooters in paris used to be an absolute mess: scooters everywhere on the sidewalk, people driving very fast etc. But IMHO it seriously improved in the past years, now if you drive a scooter on some specific zone you're pretty limited (something like 5-10km/h depending on the zone) AND you need to park at specific location. I hope that then don't ban it, because they're a life saver when it's late at night and metro is off.
jorge-d··on The plague of emoji insertion in French docs
On a mac keyboard you can just long-press?
jorge-d··on iPhone 14: Cheapest Country to Buy in 37 Countries
Yes it's two year warranty[0].

Although keep in mind that AFAIK this applies to consumers and if you buy with your business it might not apply -- learned this the hard way when my charger broke after 18 months.

jorge-d··on Snowden: US asked British spy agency to stop Guardian publishing revelations
I opened your link and saw that bio about the author:

"Fred Fleitz served in 2018 as a Deputy Assistant to President Donald Trump and Chief of Staff to National Security Adviser John Bolton."

That surely seems like a very objective person.

jorge-d··on Royal Caribbean to use SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet onboard their fleet
Or maybe we should replace all the trees by Oceans, because they're a much more efficient carbon sink !
jorge-d··on Google cracks down on VPN based adblockers
I did the same and I must say it has been a breeze to use. I even configured my own list for my family member's devices and am still not reaching the free-tier quota. I even unplugged my PiHole because this was much simpler.
