jorgem··on Show HN: INT64 - Code snippet library/manager with simple modern UI
I've been looking for something like this. What did you write it in?
jorgem··on Why I closed my Coinbase account after 10 days
Why is that?
jorgem··on Ask HN: How to price yourself?
>> I expect that to be $30/hr by the end of the year Why?
jorgem··on Unpatchable Malware That Infects USBs
Can't some of this be patched at the USB driver level in the OS? A storage device shouldn't be acting like a keyboard, etc.
jorgem··on Would anyone be interested in a capable (and free) apprentice?
No, no, no. Don't work for free. Apprentices don't work for free in any other industry. Why should you work for free?

Go out and get a job that trains you to be "production ready." You will get to to work on bigger projects, "code, refactor", and do "grunt work". Plus you will get paid.

Nothing wrong with seeking an apprenticeship. I just don't understand why you would think that "free" is a good idea.

jorgem··on Millennials Don’t Like Either Party, Democrats the Better of Two Bad Options
Luckily, none of these people vote.
jorgem··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
I call in an NPD: No people day. Need one after being with people all week.
jorgem··on Rodin Bike Wheels
The title did get changed. I think the reason it was titled "after 3d printing" was because you can make a prototype with 3d printing, but what do you do when you want to go to production?
jorgem··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
ugh. that's so horrible.
jorgem··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
Someone should market bitcoin to women. From a cursory review of that list of names, women don't seem to be signing up. Missing half the market...
jorgem··on “This presentation can’t be opened because it’s too old”
I don't think that's the same thing. If Microsoft came out with a newer version of silverlight, you'd expect it to keep reading the old files.

The fact they canceled silverlight and won't make a new version, doesn't have much to do with backwards compatibility.

jorgem··on 37signals changes name to Basecamp and changes entire company focus to Basecamp
Did they dump all the other products?
jorgem··on Netflix Kills Discussions
What if discussion were somehow linked to your netflix history?

So you see only filtered comments written by people who had seen the same (or less) episodes than you (at the time the comment is written).

That would be cool.

jorgem··on We Are Giving Ourselves Cancer

jorgem··on PayPal Denies Providing Payment Information to Twitter Username Hacker
I think that the lawyers suing for class action status use one (or a few people) as their "examples" of people harmed by the complaint. Those people may make some money... You may just need to get into your class action suits much earlier...

Sounds like a lot of other scams.

jorgem··on A 33-Year-Old NPR Story Convinced Me Google Glass Will Stop Looking So Dorky
>> You know, next thing they should do is have a little movies, you know, little sunglass movies so you don't have to look, either.

Prior art.

jorgem··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
Diversity could be: Income, Country of Origin, Sex, Sexual preference, Ethnicity... much more. It's a broad term.
jorgem··on Poll: Full-time software engineer salaries in Berlin
That is so clever. If you can convince your coworkers to use it, you can figure out if you're underpaid.
jorgem··on Linda Liukas' Programming book for Children has Huge First Day on Kickstarter
No, I think you inferred it.
jorgem··on Ask HN: How to find part-time developer work?
December/January are always the toughest month for me. Lots of companies are still working out their annual budget.

I usually just go on vacation.

jorgem··on Byte Magazine Smalltalk-80 Issue
I remember this issue vividly. I was 14. :)

I couldn't grok what smalltalk was. :(

jorgem··on My Amazon interview experience
Even if he had gotten a job offer, it's weird he never spoke to anyone he would be working with. Or visited the site in Vancouver where he would be working. It seems like more interviewing was still to come.
jorgem··on “Vacations are for the weak”
> Total productivity is actually maximized (for most of the work we do) around 6 weeks off per year.

How do you measure this?

jorgem··on Tim Draper wants California to split into 6 states
I have always been a fan of the idea of splitting up California: More senators means more people looking out for my interests (relatively). I'm always jealous of those little states who have 2 senators, but are smaller than San Diego county: Alaska, Wyoming, etc.

Shoot, Puerto Rico's population is bigger than 22 states, and those Puerto-rican US citizens don't even have senators.

How to split up California's assets and debts is a big issue.

jorgem··on DHS Announces Expansion of Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative
The government has no business circumventing minimum wage laws.
jorgem··on Obama to Commute Sentences for 8 in Crack Cocaine Cases
In general, it seems like more amnesty's and pardon's are a good idea. Considering the US has hundreds (?) of times as many people as we did at the founding, we probably don't pardon as many people (relatively) as the founders did.
jorgem··on Geneva drive
I dunno, but the article says the mechanism was used commonly in watches -- which move and wiggle quite a bit.
jorgem··on NSA phone surveillance program likely unconstitutional, federal judge rules
I just don't get it.

Based on parent comments, you're ok with the government knowing WHO/WHEN you call someone. But you have a beef with the government knowing WHERE you called from?

And your basis for that is that they've always been able to collect WHO/WHEN, but WHERE is different because it's new?

jorgem··on DNA seen through the eyes of a coder
>> you can give DNA code ... and then the machine produces the organism from that DNA code

My wife and I managed to do it a couple of times. Not that hard.

jorgem··on Sprint reportedly preparing bid to purchase T-Mobile in 2014
no. no. no. I really like t-mobile. Don't mess it up.
