joseacta··on Why I have finally taken off the Apple Watch
I have a MS Band 2 and it has been great.

- Does the fitness tracking really well - Have the GPS for walks, bike rides and running - Have notifications - Weather - Multiple devices: Android, Apple and Windows Phone - Sleep tracking - Watch - Cortana

I really need to have it on me all the time. I only take it off for charging while taking a shower.

joseacta··on Twitter kills TweetDeck for Windows, automates log-ins for TweetDeck users
They just updated their UWP app for Windows 10 this week and added a bunch of features. It makes no sense to support two different apps on the same platform.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/twitter/9wzdncrfj...

Good to see they're focusing efforts on Windows 10.

joseacta··on Stripe Dashboard for iPhone
Try the direct link from the website. It'll work.
joseacta··on Ask HN: Are there any startups making desktop apps?
We have a product that provides licensing and copy protection for desktop apps http://www.licensespot.com

We've been growing our customer base steadily. So the answer is yes, lots of startups doing desktop apps.

joseacta··on Show HN: Corrello – Dashboards and Reports for Trello
Find it strange that Trello doesn't promote this kind of add-ons on their website.
joseacta··on Check the current stock of hard-to-find Lego sets
Nice site. One advice is to remove the lego keyword from your domain ASAP. It's a trademark and they really enforce in a bad way. Change it to "bricks" as almost everybody know bricks refers to lego.
joseacta··on Why I like XSLT
What I like about them the most of the separation. You're actually manipulating the data (XML) and displaying it to end user in HTML without going through the formalities of coding.

Being using them since 1999 too. Still use them today although more work is being done with JSON/JS.

joseacta··on Show HN: Referer.io – Target website content based on referrer url
It's a no code solution.

We already have the Javascript plugin. You just install it on your site and through the admin interface you can then start configuring what content to show based on the referral url.

Does it makes sense now?

joseacta··on Show HN: Referer.io – Target website content based on referrer url
Founder here :)

You can see a demo of the product working when you click on the link. A welcome message will show up at the top welcoming all Hacker News readers.

Also the pricing table at the bottom is 100% dynamic. We actually have three pricing tables: one for HN readers, one for Product Hunt readers and another one for everyone else.

Questions or comments, just let me know.

joseacta··on Is WPF dead: the present and future of WPF
We make a software for licensing WPF applications, http://www.licensespot.com, and it's been growing pretty steady in the last few months so I guess there are still a lot of people developing and selling apps in WPF.

It just works. Some niche markets still prefer to use desktop applications.

joseacta··on Know How To Roll Your SSL Certificates
You can also configure alerts to be sent when domains and SSL certificates expire using Expiration Reminder. We already have customers using it specifically for SSLs:

joseacta··on Facebook no longer supports IE7
Wouldn't make sense to place a message saying IE7 is no longer supported and a link to upgrade? I think most Facebook users won't know what's wrong with their computers.
joseacta··on Homeowner forecloses on Wells Fargo office, becomes folk hero
This is a matter of statistics for Wells Fargo. Of all their clients, maybe 1% do protest. The other 99% just go to the bank and pay the fees.

Maybe the other 99% doesn't even read the statements and just go and pay.

For them, it's all profits. Even paying this man and their attorneys to get to a settlement doesn't make a dent to the revenue they're receiving of the other 99%.

joseacta··on More Companies Plan to Put R&D Overseas
This should be a wake up call. What about north american universities? Aren't they the best?

Maybe, but they're not affordable to every american. This countries subsidize upper studies so their citizens can access this kind of education.

I think is just a matter of priorities. Instead of spending so much on X thing, spend more on scholarships for the top students in the country in specialized science areas. Universities know how to compete.

joseacta··on Startup Visa Canada
I think money and resources are global, you just need a good reason for investors to buy your idea.

Each place has its own pros and cons. Establishing yourself in Silicon Valley brings different kinds of issues like salaries. According to the WSJ, most VC funds are spend on employee wages because of competition from Google and Facebook. http://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/2010/12/29/the-war-for-t...

joseacta··on Goldman Limits Facebook Investment to Foreign Clients because of SEC/NYT
I think it might be a way from them to put some pressure to the SEC.

1. GS is taxpayer subsidize (To Big To Fail) company. As they're a bank holding company, they can tap funds from the Feds at a very low rate. Because of this, they can make deals with an enormous amount of risk, and not care. If it fails, and cash is needed, just tap the funds.

2. The contract between GS and investors, explicitly says that GS can sell their stake on Facebook without informing investor. A clear sign of the risk associated with the deal. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-01-06/goldman-sachs-discl...

3. The SEC can't do nothing about this. There's no law that prohibits GS to do this. Instead, SEC is looking for an alternative to block the deal, as the 500 investor limit: http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/01/03/facebook-and-the-500-...

4. GS takes advantage of the media attention to the case says it will limit investments to foreign clients. It's like saying: hey, the SEC is trying to block the deal at all costs, so instead, we won't support american investors and give priority to foreigners as the international community is more open to investment and risk taking.

joseacta··on Ask HN: Getting started with the logistics of freelancing?
1. The contract should specifically say what was the agreement between you and the client. The key word here is specifically. I've found, that the more specific the contract, the more easily I can justify what is out-of-scope and generate a change request (more money for the project).

2. If you charge by the hour, you should put that on the contract. If going this route, present to the customer at least every week a status report showing what did you complete on the last week, what hours did you spend and have it sign by them. How often do you invoice is part on what agreement you reach with the client, but generally is once a month. Put that on the contract also.

3. Everything should be written in the contract.

4. Hire the CPA. You're good at programming and CPAs are good at tax and accounting. At the end, you'll save big bucks.

Also, if possible, try to incorporate, and can't say what's the best structure for you, but you can expense business related things (like laptop or software) that will help you when you report your taxes.

joseacta··on How to build discipline and brainwash yourself
The repeating of the sentences every day has to do with your subconscious mind. Repeating it will record these words in your brain and with time your thinking will change along. If you read it once, probably tomorrow you won't remember what it said.
joseacta··on Deprecating XML
I think they shouldn't be mixed. JSON has its strong attributes as also does XML. I started working with XML on 1999 and started doing AJAX style web applications on that time using XML/XSL and Internet Explorer XMLHttpRequest. So now we have JSON, good, excellent addition. Is fast and simple to implement.

But to deprecate XML, I don't think so. Imagine just an EDIFACT document in JSON?
