joshreads··on The Tech Worker Shortage Doesn't Really Exist
H1B is the opposite of Ellis Island. Immigrants who came in via Ellis Island were generally legal to live in the United States, work for whoever would hire them, and eventually become citizens. H1B holders are legally tied to a sponsoring employer, which reduces their ability to bargain in the job market, thus keeping their salaries how.

The other alternatives to H1B would be allowing more people to move to the United States and get green cards.

“A word about proportion: this business interruption affects a small percentage of Amazon’s demand-weighted units.” -a normal thing a human would say
joshreads··on Facebook without the News Feed
You can set the feed (on the phone or the website) to "most recent" as opposed to "top stories"; doing this supposedly undoes the EdgeRank filtering and gives you a reverse chronological feed of what your friends are posting. But I find it also throws in random posts from people or pages that your friends comment on, and also keeps bumping your friends posts that are getting comments from your other friends further up in the feed, so it becomes unnavigable in its own way.
joshreads··on A Tipless Restaurant is a Well-Run Restaurant?
Have you ever run a restaurant? By what crazy math is staffing only 1% of the cost of running one? (Keeping in mind that tips aren't just going to the your main waiter, they're also distributed among busboys and other customer-interacting staff.)
joshreads··on Do It For Denmark No one has solved Denmark's falling birthrate. Until now.
I mean obviously children are much more than financial drains in terms of emotional and spiritual fulfillment. I don't think anyone's arguing that. But it is true that for most of human history children were economic boons from a very young age: most people were farmers, and very few people went to school, so kids could contribute economically by doing farm chores when quite young. This is untrue in modern society, obviously. It doesn't mean people don't have children or love their children, but it does mean that people are satisfied with having one or two kids rather than the four or five or more common in agricultural societies, which puts us below replacement rates.

Nobody has solved the "problem" of a falling birthrate in a culture where there's easy access to birth control and general overall prosperity in an economic system where children are financial drains rather than financial assets, and they will continue to not solve it because it's not actually a problem?
joshreads··on My Life as a Retail Worker: Nasty, Brutish, and Cheap
I mean, do you think that the job conditions described are meant to be a punishment for his misdeeds as a journalist? Because I think you'll find that many people who did not do such things also labor under them.

A lot of this is just "person who's had white-collar job for years doesn't get how difficult service jobs are", but making your already low-paid employees do unpaid overtime work is s-k-e-t-c-h-y, and actively illegal.
