journalctl··on Copenhagen Cycles with the Young, the Old, the Busy and the Dead
What a remarkable testament to the power of automaker advertising that something as banal as riding a bike gets people so upset.
journalctl··on Microsoft REST API Guidelines
That’s what Evernote did: binary protocol and implementations in a bunch of languages. Their API was apparently easier to develop this way.
journalctl··on The revolution of machine learning has been exaggerated
“Who needs a neural net? OCaml can already match patterns!”
journalctl··on Average product lifespan of Google products before it kills them
This is what happens when companies are disorganized and don’t communicate internally.
journalctl··on OnePlus Hit by Data Breach
Nobody said they didn’t?
journalctl··on The Making of Margaret Atwood
Considering that The Handmaid’s Tale was published in 1985, I’d say her work has lasting value.
journalctl··on Google to restrict political adverts worldwide
Cool. When will they stop aggregating all of everyone’s data ever?
journalctl··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
After this change I really want to develop a native chat application on Windows and OS X. I think it’s almost to the point where someone who did they could make a killing.
journalctl··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
It’s heartening to see I’m not the only one with this problem, and also incredibly depressing.
journalctl··on How NBA executive Jeff David stole $13M from the Sacramento Kings
Wealth continues to concentrate upwards, and if you can’t easily find information on your own, I’d be happy to provide sources that show that social mobility is low, and a good predictor of your class is that of your parents. Please don’t set up this straw man. There’s nothing wrong with leaving things to your kids, but maybe you don’t need $50 billion to be distributed to three or four individuals.
journalctl··on Basic Social Skills Guide (2012)
Extend a little empathy once in a while. I promise people aren’t out to get you nearly as much as you seemingly believe.
journalctl··on ‘No one wants to open a restaurant in San Francisco’ because of break-ins, costs
Too bad that’s incorrect. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/crime-and-punishment...
journalctl··on Basic Social Skills Guide (2012)
Sometimes people just want someone to listen. Sometimes there’s nothing else you can do.
journalctl··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
“Coming up at 11, rich people don’t understand why poor people don’t just stop being poor.”
journalctl··on How NBA executive Jeff David stole $13M from the Sacramento Kings
Life’s work like what, inheriting wealth?
journalctl··on Empathic concern does not reduce partisan animosity: study
People tend to think that your beliefs drive your actions. So if someone claims to believe one thing, but acts in accordance with other beliefs, what are you going to assume about their beliefs? If I talk about believing in family values but make it impossible for gay people to get married, do I really believe in family values? Or was I just lying/using a dog whistle?
journalctl··on New, slippery toilet coating provides cleaner flushing, saves water
I don’t mean this judgmentally, but how much water do you use? The bulk of residential water use tends to be for landscaping, in particular watering lawns. When my city raised rates for excess water usage, all of the homeowners complained, even though they require vastly more water infrastructure and end up using a lot more water for their lawns.
journalctl··on Tunnel Boring Machines (2018)
> I still don't enjoy being squeezed in with thousands of other people.

I still don’t enjoy the global mean temperature getting higher and causing flood and famine, but I guess your personal comfort is more important.

journalctl··on Interpol plans to condemn encryption spread, citing predators
You can do encryption with a pen, paper, and a calculator. The genie is out of the bottle at this point.
journalctl··on Is there any data that says secondhand car seats aren’t safe?
There’s also only so much you can realistically do to keep you and/or a child safe in a car accident. Cars are just dangerous, and although safety has improved, slamming into anything at 60+ mi/h can only be made so safe. Combine a need for control with the anxiety of being a parent, and it’s no wonder car seat marketing works so well. After a certain point, though, some things are out of your control, and people should take solace in realizing that they can only realistically do so much to keep their kids safe. (This applies to everything outside of your country, by the way.)
journalctl··on Amtrak Could Turn a Profit for the First Time
US residents pay too much for healthcare because we let healthcare and insurance companies squeeze as much profit as possible from people. It’s fucked up that an unplanned medical emergency can make you bankrupt. Somehow everyone else in the world manages to avoid that, and yet Americans either cry about socialism or think it’s some kind of impossible dark magic.
journalctl··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
Lots of meetings can also be a sign of churn. If people can’t make decisions, or consistently flip flop on decisions, it can be reflected in lots of (ultimately pointless) meetings.
journalctl··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
I work with people like that. They’re extremely siloed and they make decisions in a vacuum. It always ends up creating problems for everyone else. Then when we actually do have meetings, they don’t want to collaborate or discuss, they just want everything immediately, end of discussion. It doesn’t work.

If you don’t want to work with other people, move out into the woods.

journalctl··on A turf war and a botched contract landed two pentesters in Iowa jail
They only make mistakes when the other party isn’t white.
journalctl··on KonMari method in under 1000 words
If you’re emotionally attached to something, you can consider that “sparking joy”. Although personally, I’d have to think hard about whether or not certain emotional attachments were good or healthy. Like, the old, ratty blanket from childhood? It has sentimental value, but it’s not really worth keeping because it just takes up space.

I think the whole point of KonMari is just that you’re mindful and thoughtful when choosing, but ultimately it’s all up to you.

journalctl··on To motivate people, talk about the context of the work to be done
That’s what we call “lying”.
journalctl··on European Investment Bank to phase out fossil fuel financing
They’re also entirely different issues. One is about handling to payment for people who are not really harming anyone (or at least not doing massive environmental damage). The other is... doing massive environmental damage.

Cool, so I guess we just downvote stuff we disagree with.

journalctl··on Do You Know Who Owns Your Debt?
I think those are basically credit derivatives.
journalctl··on Hayabusa2 is leaving the asteroid Ryugu and heading back to Earth
And it seems so effortless! Like, “duh, of course we landed a satellite on an asteroid and blew off bits of minerals for later analysis. What, like it’s hard?” Obviously it’s incredibly difficult, but the point is that we did it. I like to think the very first humans who peered up at the heavens with rudimentary telescopes would be incredibly proud. They should be.
journalctl··on Fusion in a magnetically-shielded-grid inertial electrostatic confinement device
So don’t bring your credit cards in to work!
