jphalimi··on Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles
I am so, so tired of Tesla's claims that FSD is "multiple times safer than humans" when the data they base these claims on are basically people using FSD in a totally safe environment which made them use FSD in the first place (mostly long straight highways).

Anyone trying FSD in a crowded city environment would shit their pants. Unprotected lefts are very often a mess, and interventions are legion. It is really a breath of fresh air to hear news outlets report finally about the actual state of the technology.

jphalimi··on SimCity 4 was released 20 years ago
If you love SimCity 3k/4 music, it is made by Jerry Martin and saxophonist Marc Russo.

A few great links for you: http://jerrymartinmusic.com/music_demo.php On this demo page website, you can find some original jazz samples not included in SC3k even though they are quite amazing

http://boombamboom.com/ Some website Jerry Martin opened a few years ago where you can download high-quality music from the games he worked on (Sims, Sim City etc)

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1467440/SimCasino_Soundtr... Sim Casino is a way more recent game, and Jerry Martin / Marc Russo came back together to write the OST! It has a lot of feels from SC3k/SC4 music, so you might want to look into it.

You can also find one of their interviews here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1158420/view/4689895...

As you can see I am quite the fan... :-)

jphalimi··on Monkeypox declared global health emergency by WHO as cases surge

jphalimi··on Only 90s web developers remember this (2014)
Memories! :-) I was a web developer in the 2000s and I can relate to all of these very accurately… Replace Frontpage 98 by Frontpage 2003 and there you go!
jphalimi··on Apple M1 MacBook vs. PC Desktop Workstation for Adobe Creative Cloud
Did they just compare a desktop running native x86 code to results of translated code using Rosetta 2 in MacOS/M1?
jphalimi··on Auto-cpufreq – Automatic CPU speed and power optimizer for Linux
Absolutely. I don’t know what this tool is about, but the README statement is wrong; I can’t think of any distribution dumb enough to use performance governor by default. Most Intel-based platforms use Intel-specific governors.

I developed an energy-aware DVFS controller for HPC clusters a few years back, and there was no such thing as performance by default even on compute nodes.

jphalimi··on Super Mario Bros. has been released for the Commodore 64
I am sorry if this is off-topic, but is this board running phpBB2 from 15 years ago? I have used most versions of phpBB until 2015, they all came with so many security holes, I have been hacked so many times because of it, how is this board still up and running!?
jphalimi··on Animals are no less emotional than we are
Opinion: Your Dog Feels as Guilty as She Looks

Science does not need opinions. The question is worth asking, but this article does not seem to be backed by any kind of research or experiments.

jphalimi··on France might be losing its first big information war
You are right. The 2017 election in France was under the spotlight especially after what happened in 2016 in the US and the Brexit in the UK.

EM! (Macron's party) was a victim of massive internet attacks during the campaign. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/ne...

In the past couple of weeks, I have seen French fake posts that were popular in the past 24 months raise again like an army of Phoenix. As far as media go, we have usually and relatively independent media in France, even public. However, foreign entities and especially RT France have been controversial in some of their coverage.

jphalimi··on Facebook adding “fbclid” parameter to outbound links
Do you know if the rewrite happens before a user clicks a link? If it happens after, the data ends up actually being sent out to their server...
jphalimi··on Google is the new Yahoo
There are tons of things to complain about Google, but bashing a company just because they close some of their services is rather lame in my opinion. Companies innovate, and it is good to recognize you fail bringing significant value to the market, close what does not work and move on to the next. Staying relevant is difficult enough.
jphalimi··on Greenhouse gas emissions from the largest US industrial plants fell 2.7% in 2017
No. Withdrawal of the Paris agreement led to other political initiatives such as oil and gas projects, such as Keystone XL or new EPA (de)regulations, that could have been avoided.

Here again, a consequential drop in emissions does not mean that there is a political effect. Policies such as the Paris agreement are looking for long-term effects, rather than fluctuation deriving from a specific economical situation.

jphalimi··on Greenhouse gas emissions from the largest US industrial plants fell 2.7% in 2017
Bottom line, clean energy is getting cheaper so it cuts emissions of bigger emitters. Purely economical side-effect.

I think the bigger picture would be to look at solar panel installments and their overall contribution in the energy package of the US.

Hints: "Solar accounts for 55% of all US electricity added so far in 2018." Source: https://www.businessinsider.com/more-solar-power-than-any-ty...

jphalimi··on A Comparison of Functional Data Structures on the JVM
Thanks for sharing! One quick question: in the methodology section, you mention that the results are from a median value out of repeated runs. While I get that you run JITted code, you also mention that it makes the runs isolated from GC side-effects.

Just out of curiosity, what did you do to ensure that GC would not interfere with the execution while the tests are running?

jphalimi··on The mysterious case of missing URLs and Google's AMP
Telling Google is open-source is like telling MacDonald's is healthy because it has a slice of tomato and salad.

Android is not entirely open-source. Chrome browser is not entirely open-source. Google Web Apps are not open source. Google Search is not open source.

jphalimi··on The new MacBook Pros with T2 chips do indeed kernel panic randomly
While I understand your point, I think this guy really needs a chill pill. Give Apple some slack to fix a bug. There was, there is and there will always be bugs in software. Just report it. If one does not fix the problem on time, then it's fine to get angry. But overreacting like that won't help anything.
jphalimi··on The SF Bay Area, where the streets are paved with single young men
As usual, the study is, as mentioned in the article, heteronormative, and does not take into account the fact that some people may not feel the need to marry to be in a meaningful / long term relationship.
jphalimi··on What We Have Now Is Not Advertising
The scale of the tracking you are mentioning is nothing compared to what ads platforms do nowadays...
jphalimi··on What We Have Now Is Not Advertising
It would be interesting to see user studies over which platforms they feel the more trustworthy.

Honestly considering the opacity of their privacy rules, it's all about marketing and how receptive you are to it. Apple does communicate a lot more about privacy of its users, but it is unclear whether they actually are objectively better than the others big names.

From a business model point of view however, I agree that it's clear Amazon, Facebook and Google make most of their revenue out of users tracking. It is not true for Apple.

jphalimi··on What We Have Now Is Not Advertising
I do not agree. Things are not binary. There are tradeoffs in everything we do. Such tradeoffs do not make his points invalid, they actually emphasize the limits of our control over privacy. I find it quite more honest and exhaustive than just winding about ads.
jphalimi··on Ask HN: What are the best hacks to fight depression?
If you have been feeling depressed for a long time, I recommend consulting a professional.

I think I entered depression a few months ago after a hard breakup and a difficult personal, professional situation. I could not do my daily activities, I just wanted to stay in the corner of a room and cry out my pain. It was physically painful, too. I am still recovering and it takes a lot of time to.

One thing that helped me is to read self-development books. I read two, it has literally saved me from sinking. If you like philosophy, I highly recommend it.

Florence Scovel Shinn, The Game of Life and How To Play It:

Louise L. Hay, You Can Heal Your Life:

1 hour of your life. I like some parts of this book a lot. Some are weird to me, but once you sort things out, I concluded that it helped me a lot.

Oh and one last thing, from experience, IT GETS BETTER. It might sound silly or something you've heard 1000 times, but it does. I've been there.

Hope this helps. And feel free to reach out if you want to rant.

jphalimi··on Near-Collapse of ZTE May Be China’s Sputnik Moment
I'm surprised nothing has been said about Huawei's HiSilicon Kirin ARM chips. Their latest mobile chips are definitely on par with the best on the market.

Mediatek is also another big player among the chip manufacturer and they make their own-designed chips as well.

jphalimi··on Chinese EV and PHEV car sales are skyrocketting in 2018
We often talk of Chinese copycats when it comes to their auto industry, and even today you can easily find mainstream car brands selling shameful copies of European or American cars (I'm looking at you, Zotye...). That being said, it becomes more and more obvious that in recent years, the pace of improvement has been unprecedented among Chinese carmakers, despite the market plateauing since 2017. The last fascinating shift is the push for clean cities, and as a result the development of numerous electrified vehicles. In April 2018 in China, some EV, PHEV and Hybrid models reached 2, 3 or 4x sales compared to the same period last year. The market opportunity is huge and it is yet another sign that China will become one of the leaders in environment in the coming years considering its impact on its economy. I find this fascinating, and I thought it would be nice to raise awareness around this shift.
jphalimi··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
"Google’s PM director for Chrome OS Kan Liu told me the company was obviously aware that people were using Crouton to do this before. But doing this also meant doing away with all of the security features that come with Google’s operating system."

I don't know if I am the only one, but this one made me laugh.

jphalimi··on The problem with Facebook
It saddens me that someone that brilliantly summarizing the problems of extensive AI-driven content organization in tech companies does not seem to understand that the company he works for suffer from the same exact problems.

The real question I am having reading this thread is: is this guy being very naive, or just dishonest?

jphalimi··on The problem with Facebook
Facebook needs "like" buttons, Google have other, more invisible ways: mainly Google Analytics and Google Adsense.
jphalimi··on Faster Coding Interview Prep Using Interactive Visualizations
You are right, you don't "have to" do anything, as long as you don't want to get a job at one of these companies. :-)

The truth of the matter is that, at the end of the day, some companies can afford to tell you no, even if you are talented, because they will get other people who want to do what you don't "have to" do. And it works quite well for them, as you can see.

jphalimi··on So, leboncoin.fr doesn't like my email alert webapp
This is not a French phenomenon. There is a difference between political affairs, such as extreme rights winning elections and a nuclear bomb explosion, than your neighbor being an asshole. Being ashamed of something means people you consider in the same group as you do things you find not acceptable (it could be a country, as it's the case here, but also a community, a football team or whatever). In fact, being ashamed shows you'd prefer this entity to react differently to make you and the group you're considering better.

Yes, we should be ashamed when someone does something wrong. In fact, we shouldn't be ashamed to be ashamed of some dumb decision. Being ashamed doesn't mean we are not doing anything else about it. You've seen Frenchmen being ashamed to be French, and that's OK. It means they're not thinking their country is the best, but they can also learn from their mistakes. And I am proud of this, as a French person, too, though I am ashamed of LeBonCoin's strategy.
