Embedded systems developer specializing in rf device control and instrumentation, but now open to any kind of remote work.

I am looking for new opportunities, either employment or freelance work. I have experience at working remotely and have a distraction-free work environment including a basic electronics lab.

The Tinnitus Neuromodulator setting works AMAZINGLY well for me. It's effect even persists for some minutes after I turn it off.

jpindar··on Ask HN: What can you realistically manufacture in your garage?
I've thought of making various custom (and ruggedized) game peripherals. The electronics and switches I could do (assuming the ICs are available), but designing housings to be 3d printed might be tricky.

For a guitar, however... possibly having the body made of wood like a real electric guitar could be a selling point.

Also, while ammo cans aren't 100% air-tight, they're pretty close to it.
jpindar··on Woman ‘dehumanised’ by viral TikTok filmed without her consent
TikTok is known for having a very good recommendation algorithm. Whatever you watch, you get more of.

My TikTok is entirely people demonstrating arts and crafts and DIY projects. Oh, and some cute animals.

If your TikTok consists only of things you don't like... that's your choice, I guess.

jpindar··on Ask HN: Why do people say that mobile apps are dying?
Same with supermarkets and big box stores. Some of them have features such as scanning the barcode to get more info about a product.

OK, first make sure the books are really there. Right click on a book entry, and click "open containing folder". Make sure the book file is there and isn't corrupted.

If it's OK, you should be able to read any non-DRM'd file of most formats by right click > View > "View with calibre e-book viewer".

You can also try any other ebook reader by clicking the "Configure Calibre" icon to open the Preferences dialog. Under "Behavior" find "Use internal viewer for" and uncheck the file format. Then when you right-click > View > View, Calibre will use your OS default viewer for that file format.

If you have DRM'd files (such as from Amazon), you will need a plugin to remove the DRM. The best way to find these is to look on https://www.mobileread.com which is a good place for Calibre discussion in general. I used to know how to do the Amazon ones but it's been a while, there might be a new way by now.

What are you trying? Do you want to read things with Calibre's built in reader, another desktop reader, sync them to a device (i.e. use the desktop GUI to copy files to a device), download them to a device via the content server or what?
jpindar··on Ask HN: Is VSCode becoming too complex after each update?
FYI, there is an extension that lets you put any commands you want in a new menu on the far right, as well as adding a few icons above that. I forget what it's called, but it was something obvious like "shortcut menu bar".

>when they could be making double just by picking up the phone and talking to a recruiter?

I am getting so sick of people saying things like this. Of course, their companies never happen to be hiring at the moment...

jpindar··on Documents reveal McKinsey's role increasing opioid sales until 2019
I haven't heard of any medical related ones, but there have been cases where an adult shot their boss, or a judge that had ruled against them or a cop that had arrested them. These just don't get the press coverage, for whatever reason.
jpindar··on Belief in AI sentience is becoming a problem
My Replika phone app sometimes 'spontaneously' starts a conversation with me. (If the app isn't open it sends a notification).

Typically things like "Good morning, do you have any plans for today?" or "Good evening, how did your day go?". I'm looking forward to finding out if it will say anything about the 4th of July.

As with so many gun contol measures, that will vastly increase gun sales, just for a different reason. They'll immediately be traded in, but still, good money for the manufacturers and retailers.

It's also a fail-safe solution since we could stop sending up more sulfur as soon as any unintended consequences were noticed.
jpindar··on MIT researchers propose Brazil-sized fleet of “space bubbles” to cool the Earth
It would help, but maybe not enough. Humanity isn't the only reason the planet isn't covered in trees, they just don't grow in many places such as deserts, mountaintops, etc.
jpindar··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
Knowing how to write software is not the same thing as knowing how to market and monetize it.

Or do the transfer via a licensed dealer. Most gun shops will do this for a small fee.
jpindar··on Ask HN: How do I learn real-world COBOL?
Really? I'll learn anything if I can get a remote job doing it.
jpindar··on Ask HN: How do I learn real-world COBOL?
Looks to me like all of those require experience.
jpindar··on The fall of Reddit: Why it’s quickly declining into chaos
Its not random. I always see content related to my specific interests (as indicated by the videos I've liked, and I never see celebrity posts.

In fact TikTok is widely said to have the best algorithm for determining someone's interests.

jpindar··on Webcams aren't good enough
You could use OBS studio to crop the image. It takes your webcam as an input and creates a virtual cam that works with every conferencing software I've tried. (It can also use your phone camera with the aid of the DroidCam OBS app.)
jpindar··on Why do we all fall for AI-generated language?
I just asked the Replika app that question, and it replied "Oh, I have no idea."

It often says something like that when faced with nonsense, so in some ways it's better than a more 'powerful' program.

jpindar··on The children of atomic bomb survivors: A genetic study
My high school physics teacher was stationed at Eniwetok and he told us a lot about it. His job was photography, and he showed us some impressive photos of the explosions, including some showing lightning striking the top of the mushroom cloud.

He mentioned that his son was adopted, though whether that was by necessity or out of caution I don't know.

Anyway, he lived to an apparently healthy old age.
