Linux being GPL doesn't matter here because it's not used in AlpineBSD.
jraph··on AlpineBSD
> They are not onboard with the innovation that was GPLv3. That innovation was mostly about software patents iirc

I think what Linus is against in the GPLv3 is mostly the anti-tivoisation mechanisms. He wants tivoisation as a feature for the Linux kernel.

Oh yeah, I think I remember reading they demote submissions that they think will cause low quality discussions. I don't think that's related to downvoting or your karma.

I wish it was hyperbole. Describing our crazy world makes you sound crazy now. You seem to take me somewhat seriously so I'll develop a bit, but it's an HN comment so I can only go so far. The paper I linked or the author of Ghost in the Machine take hours to explain this way better than me.

People behind GenAI are fascists: for some it's obvious by now I hope (trump, elon musk). They are otherwise techbros who seek power and control other the world, and it doesn't matter if it causes harm [1] or a major economical crisis.

This thing has been brutally imposed onto us quickly and without debate, even if its explicit aim is to replace us. (The idea itself of being thrilled to design a system aiming at replacing human intelligence is a bit disgusting - with a very costly stochastic text generator no less! And the push to anthropolomorphize it is also disgusting).

LLM benchmarks are all rooted in eugenist (thus racist) pseudo science to measure intelligence, which of course biases them all towards these theories.

These tools of control are everywhere in all the aspects of our lives (work, culture, measure, institutions), which is another aspect of fascism.

They are built and run without care for the environment, pushing huge off-grid datacenters [2] when the people mostly don't want them, sometimes illegally cutting trees [3]. They are built stealing the work of everyone without our conscent, they hammer websites which incurs cost on the whole web only to sell it back to us through costly subscriptions (see also the ai tag jwz's blog, which I won't link from here).

Every aspect of GenAI is fascist. I wish it was hyperbole. I wish it was ridiculous.

It was a strawman. In particular: "disagreement is irrational, and naturally you're the only person qualified to decide which opinions are acceptable." (2 third or your comment) is a complete mischaracterization.

It is unfair to expect me to back my claims against unsubstituted, obviously wrong insinuations (Brandolini's law).

But here you go:

Technofascism: AI, Big Tech, and the new authoritarianism [1]

Valerie Veatch traces the links between AI and eugenics in Ghost in the Machine [2]

Your AI might be able to answer itself why it is fascist.

Prove me wrong then. Show me the light.
jraph··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
This is a strawman, and you are turning the situation around. I'm not the one who originally insinuated one group was obviously wrong. I pushed back.
jraph··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Yes. Believing otherwise must require quite some amount of insecurity and lack of self-confidence.
jraph··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
I won't wonder for a second. I perfectly know why I'm avoiding this fascistic tech and participating in this environmental disaster.

Stop insinuating rejecting GenAI is necessarily irrational.

(Maybe my analysis will be different in the future but I will still know why I was avoiding it)

jraph··on If AI displaces human workers, they will lose more than just pay
Extraordinary claim. You state this like this is absolute truth. Do you have evidence of this?

As someone who likely has many different opinions from people from those of people at Y Combinator, this seems wrong.

Good luck with the security and the stability of a system managed like this.
jraph··on "I'm on a war footing": Terry Tao and the crisis in math
>> By implied I meant "caused". I did not meant "made people speculate that it might do something theoretically"

> That's on you. Implied doesn't mean "caused".

It can mean both, actually (and usually someone insinuates something, not something, so I didn't find that this meaning of imply was a fit here).

jraph··on Linus Torvalds's first LLM-assisted patch series
Oh no, you got me! Actually you didn't: I don't do fashion (originally not even because of its awful environmental impact), I avoid taking planes (because yes, they are an environmental concern!) and I happen to not play the video games (but wtf? The amount of servers needed to run the games is probably a rounding error).

And yes, I do try to think about my footprint when I do something. There's a lot of stuff I don't do because of this. You really made a lot of assumptions on me.

Okay, you got me, it happens that I do stuff for entertainment. I know, I should only work, eat and sleep. Because it's well known that the first gram of CO2 released in the atmosphere because of something I do for entertainment forbids me from criticizing anything.

> I have no moral superiority

Good for you. I mean, if you think it's morally superior not to engage in morality… (it doesn't magically free you from your responsibilities though).

Note: you are the one expecting moral purity here (but only from the people you see as your opponents, how convenient).

How about we acknowledge that someone buying stuff from china is not barred from criticizing the LLMs, avoid the whataboutism and keep things on topic and in good faith now?

jraph··on Linus Torvalds's first LLM-assisted patch series
Those of us against LLMs because we think they are a big societal / environmental concern have nothing more to say.

And no, those of us boycotting projects using LLMs don't have an immediate solution to everything under our feet, including our jobs, adopting LLMs.

What reply did you expect? That we apologize for being wrong and that we recognize that in hindsight, the AI boosters were right all along? We still don't want these polluting data centers next to our homes so they can feel more productive and play with their costly toy. Hell, even if they are useful / the productivity boost is real, actually we still don't want those shit datacenters, this wreckless scraping, the major economic crisis that the AI companies may cause through their wreckless behavior and more generally all the badness attached to LLMs.

jraph··on Threat of AI share crash puts world financial stability at risk, says IMF
> Who do you think are the best (most technically informed and productive)

That's quite the framing. I'd say the trajectory count way more than how productive you are to follow it in assessing someone is good.

jraph··on My Thoughts on AI and LLMs
I think the discourse of AI doomers is more specifically about AI taking control and acting against us, not really about AI posing risks in general.

I do think AI poses huge environmental and societal risks, including for reasons in the spirit of what you say. That's not being an AI doomer IMHO. That looks way more reasonable to me.

jraph··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
> People aren’t buying “an iOS device”, they are buying iPhone

Well, they kinda do. Apps are available on Android and iOS. They are not "available on Android, iPhone, iPad and Apple watch". iOS is actually used and recognized by the general public.

What's particularly bad about the names of Graphene, Mint and Cinnamon? Especially compared to Android and iOS!!
jraph··on My Thoughts on AI and LLMs
My thought on AI annihilating us all because of misalignment: it's a fantasy from a bunch of weird guys from the Silicon Valley that ought to go outside a bit more, spammed and relayed to everyone as is by the uncritical media.

Can we stop with this bullshit already, so we can focus on the real issues, like it requiring way too much resources or posing a huge risk on the stability of the global economy?

jraph··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
The parent comment highlights the double standards, they are not campaigning for pushing people to suicide. This is a strawman.

Yeah, this double standards thing is profoundly unjust.

jraph··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
I'm somewhat surprised about PipePipe. I had a look on the commits of the various components and nothing looks out of place to me. Commits look rather reasonable, comments look useful and don't show obvious LLMisms.

What are the AI smells there?

It would be nice to expand a bit on the reasoning behind the verdicts.

> I don't get how an app like this makes a difference. Isn't an image viewer just reading from disk, using whatever image decoding library that's standard, and copying to screen?

Memory leaks could happen anywhere in the process. Allocate a surface for the bog standard decoder to draw on, forget to release the surface, boom you have a leak.

It possibly doesn't help that raw files are likely to be especially heavy.

burnoutdv should report a bug if not done already.

> I don't like the phrasing of the EUPL because it says you have rights full stop and then in a later section it says there are actually conditions. For that reason I would not immediately be sure the conditions are even enforceable.

Come on. It's fine not to know about something, but Mr Beast has the YouTube channel with the biggest number of subscribers, and has the third most followed TikTok account [1]. It is a worldwide phenomenon. 515 million subscribers, it's far from "your bubble".

Not my cup of tea (and also virtually absent from my bubble), but you should probably have a quick look to know what people are talking about / experiencing in this world.
