jspaetzel··on Playa Phone
Slow your roll, not everything is a startup, some things are just for fun
jspaetzel··on Grok 4.5
How's this going with the rest of the models?
jspaetzel··on Google plans to invest up to $40B in Anthropic
Increasing shareholder value
jspaetzel··on We moved Railway's frontend off Next.js. Builds went from 10+ mins to under 2
Incredible that the builds were ever 10min. How far things have regressed.
jspaetzel··on Some things just take time
Was hoping this wasn't ai related, disappointed
jspaetzel··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
They should just increase the taxes on rental income to make it less profitable. It's too easy to be a bum landlord.
jspaetzel··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Higher rent means more people will opt to buy. That's not necessarily a bad thing in perspective. Assuming the other side effect is a decrease in costs due to a lower profit margin.
jspaetzel··on Fast
Why's this so highly rated. Y'all don't know that fast is good?
jspaetzel··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
It's somewhat telling that the most valuable part of an company is the people, some things don't change
jspaetzel··on Player Piano Rolls
Love that this company is still around. I've seen some of their rolls in the wild but assumed they were long gone!
jspaetzel··on High-School Shop Students Attract Skilled-Trades Job Offers
I went to maybe slightly above average high school for my area and didn't have one. But there were programs where the school partnered with community colleges and students maintaining decent grades could attend classes elsewhere. And those had shop as well as other vocational programs.

They probably sent us home with a pamphlet with information at the beginning of the year, but I don't remember.

jspaetzel··on Laravel Cloud
AWS based on https://cloud.laravel.com/docs/pricing#compute
jspaetzel··on PHP 8.4
I usually wait 6mo to a year in order for composer dependencies I use to get updated. Then its usually a trivial upgrade. I've upgraded sooner before for simpler projects though and things are usually pretty stable upon release.
jspaetzel··on Show HN: Pumpkin – A Modern Minecraft server written in Rust
Modern in software terms almost always just means recently written. Last couple years. It's a pretty useless adjective to describe software.

E.g. sqlite probably wouldn't be called modern, but everyone loves it so who cares.

jspaetzel··on America is becoming less "woke"
Examples of poor polling data for $200
jspaetzel··on People can read their manager's mind (2015)
This cuts a little deep "Who can, and sometimes does, un-rot the fish from the bottom? An insane employee."
jspaetzel··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
This is nothing new or exclusive to Roblox, I recall this sort of language in every online gaming platform.
jspaetzel··on I Quit Spotify
Airplane mode being broken on two flights was the final straw for me. YouTube music's offline is also sorta wonky but at least it mostly works
jspaetzel··on OpenAI and Apple Announce Partnership
Siri now powered by OpenAI powered by Microsoft Azure
jspaetzel··on A deep dive into email deliverability in 2024
for a long time it hasn't been a software problem. It's been a reputation problem, the only recent change is we're more interested in the domain then the IP now.
jspaetzel··on Lcl.host: fast, easy HTTPS in your local dev environment
I've been using mkcert for ages now for local development. Free, open source, and works offline.

Why use any service for this?

jspaetzel··on Quality is a hard sell in big tech
Quality is hard because people stop talking to customers and become out of touch with them. Everyone thinks the next big thing will be what customers want, but customers will tell you what they want unfortunately nobody is listening.
jspaetzel··on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not
Microsoft failed to disrupt the smartphone market because they tried doing it at a period of all time low Microsoft sentiment, especially in the developer community. If they tried it again today, it might actually work.

Apple putting a toe in the water is roughly equivalent to Microsoft's HoloLens effort. I wouldn't compare it to Xbox or even the Windows Phone. Ironically Apple might fail here because they're developer relations isn't exactly great right now and they might lose this the same way Microsoft lost mobile.

jspaetzel··on The weirdest bug I've seen yet
I've run into something similar to this a few years ago where chrome randomly introduced a rendering bug that resulted in a similar crash and only affected our application in seemingly random fashion. I don't remember the full context but I think it was something involving layers & transparency.

We finally figured it out when a coworker couldn't replicate and we noticed they were a version of chrome behind. We were able to track down the specific commits in chrome that broke & fixed it in our case which was pretty cool to see at the time.

If you have any more time I recommend reading through the commit log and see if you can find the changes that broke/fixed this for you. I'd bet on another rendering bug.

jspaetzel··on Microsoft is retiring Visual Studio for Mac in 2024
It was an acquisition, came with Xamarin
jspaetzel··on Xbox will block third-party controllers to "preserve the console experience"
They'll still work fine. MadCatz is licensed. There are tons of licensed accessory vendors for Xbox.
jspaetzel··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
So many things require HTTPS now I always use HTTPS during development with local certs via mkcert
jspaetzel··on Ask HN: Just moved to SF. How can I leverage my new location to skill up in dev?
Definitely the best choice.
jspaetzel··on Ask HN: Just moved to SF. How can I leverage my new location to skill up in dev?
