JSR COUT, my friends. And when you CALL -151, don't forget to 3D0G!

jsrcout··on Emacs Turns 50
Awesome. I wasn't sure if anyone else remembered those. Formative stuff for me :-)
jsrcout··on Ghostty 1.4
Ooh, those are nice! Thanks for the tip.
jsrcout··on Programming Isn't Special
I believe so. I mean, I care a lot about the end result and whether it solves the problem. But I'm motivated more by how one does the work, the quality and aesthetics of (say) the code I write, and so forth.

Most people I work with are more in the 2nd camp. But I've known people in both.

jsrcout··on NASA Super Intelligence Page
It's here.
jsrcout··on C++ Insights – See your source code with the eyes of a Compiler
Definitely trying this out. I've always had the problem of "but what is the compiler thinking?" with C++ in particular.
jsrcout··on The new Firefox design is here
I'm glad we can roll it back, but wonder how long that will be the case.
jsrcout··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
That was beautiful. I sincerely hope you are writing a book about your experiences.
jsrcout··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
Nice! That's a new one for me.
jsrcout··on Bug Blindness
I was always soooo tempted to say "pretend I can't see whatever you're looking at right now..."
jsrcout··on A joke domain purchase turned in geopolitical warfare
That's really going above and beyond. Hope it helped them.
jsrcout··on Every fast write moves work somewhere else
My friend calls it the lump under the carpet. You can move it around, but you can never get rid of it.
jsrcout··on Franken.domains: Stitched-Together Domains, Because Every .com Is Taken
Yikes, must have missed that one. Horrifying thought.
jsrcout··on The Alice and Bob After Dinner Speech (1984)
This one of my favorite speeches for being both educational and entertaining. It's especially gratifying to learn the background story for the mysterious Alice and Bob.
jsrcout··on Shay Locomotives
You can still ride a Shay-powered train at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Scenic_Railroad_State_Par.... It's an old-time logging railroad that goes up into the mountains from a former https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_town founded in 1901.
jsrcout··on Stolen Buttons
Nice! That Windows 95/98 GUI design wasn't the most beautiful ever made, but it was quite usable. You never had trouble telling what was what.
jsrcout··on Stolen Buttons
Ooh, nice! This very much appeals to the historian and former GUI developer in me.

Update: The Pixel Perfect checkbox makes a noticeable difference in appearance. I presume this is because older systems were developed before the advent of anti-aliasing, and were designed pixel by pixel.

jsrcout··on Stolen Buttons
Interesting site. As a non-Web developer, I've vaguely wondered about the various frameworks and where the "look and feel" that I see on different sites' user controls come from. This be will fun to explore.
jsrcout··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
For tools that don't support -0, you can add the NULs yourself without much fuss. It's a one-liner in awk/perl/sed. Very handy.
jsrcout··on Goes-19 weather satellite enters Safe Hold mode
That's a new one for me. Do you happen to have any pointers to more info? I found a few mentions, but nothing substantial.
jsrcout··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
In fact, he loves us!
jsrcout··on Zig – SPIR-V Backend Progress
> time is now part of the io interface [...]

Nice, didn't know that! Sounds like this could be extremely useful for some of the simulators we work on (though we mostly work in C/C++).

jsrcout··on Show HN: A pure-Ruby X11 terminal
> Why? Because I can.

Always the best reason.

jsrcout··on Perlisisms (1982)
> 11. If you have a procedure with ten parameters, you probably missed some.

That brings back some memories. Just glad I eventually learned better.

jsrcout··on More Molly Guards
It was amazing to read the original account in the alumni newsletter, and it was great to see the photo. The legend is real! Heh heh.
jsrcout··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
I was... not prepared for your standup to comic README. Besides just being a cool idea, you gave me some things to think about and several new rabbit holes to explore.
jsrcout··on Powering up a module from the IBM 604: an electronic calculator from 1948
> 1948 was an interesting time for computing.

Not a commonly seen statement :-)

jsrcout··on The dead economy theory
Dammit, another horrifying yet entirely realistic near-future scenario to keep me up at night.
jsrcout··on U.S. researchers face new restrictions on publishing with foreign collaborators
Oh, absolutely. For instance I never thought Lysenkoism would happen again, but the conditions are ripe for it.
jsrcout··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
Same here. The Teams meeting page layout pisses me off on a regular basis, with way too much useless space around everything, tons of unhideable icons and crap filling half the screen, and all the actual content crammed into a little box. I'm sitting here with a 4K 27" monitor and all that space and resolution is just wasted. Yeah you can work around it, but what a PITA.
jsrcout··on Mounting tar archives as a filesystem in WebAssembly
Ratarmount is so cool. Recently I wanted to look at a couple random files in a > 300G compressed tarball. It just wouldn't have been worth doing without it.
