julianb··on Amazon Instant Video on Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
Macworld recently wrote about this: http://www.macworld.com/article/1168038/playing_amazon_insta...

As others have commented, it's a licensing issue.

One workaround is loading the Amazon Video Player in Safari on a Mac, then mirroring the display on AppleTV. Looks best in full screen mode.

julianb··on Secure Shell chrome (killer) app
That's right. But Secure Shell also knows how to connect to an HTTP-to-ssh relay.
julianb··on Secure Shell chrome (killer) app
One use case would be ssh over http. Corporate proxies often disallow ssh traffic.
julianb··on Dive into Responsive Prototyping with Foundation
Looks like Balsamiq Mockups.

Any thoughts on Atlassian Crowd?

julianb··on Jelastic - Holy Grail of Java Hosting? (user review)
Their documentation looks a lot like Heroku Dev Center. Anyone know if this is an open source wiki?
julianb··on How Y Combinator Started
It's hard for people to realize now how inconsequential YC seemed at the time. I can't blame people who didn't take us seriously, because we ourselves didn't take that first summer program seriously in the very beginning.

I attended the "How to Start a Startup" talk in 2005. I remember going home and reading pg's website, the whole thing, cover-to-cover. Later that year I met Steve Wozniak at the first Startup School held in Cambridge. Woz, Chris Sacca and pg left a lasting impression on me. I had never witnessed that level of information density and knowledge sharing. Amazing to look back at those humble beginnings. Always grateful for YC and the HN community.

julianb··on Apple releases Ipad 3
Looks like the iPad2 is available for $399 now.
julianb··on Stop Launching Shitty MVPs in Competitive Markets
I think the author makes some important points. So I visited Groove and tried to sign-up. This is what I got on Chrome in Mac OS X.

julianb··on Marco Arment on the new Kindles
Doesn't seem fitting to end the post with affiliate links, after criticizing Amazon for offering ad supported versions of the Kindle.
julianb··on Amazon Unveils $199 Kindle Fire Tablet
Interesting. Found some more details here:

julianb··on Amazon Unveils $199 Kindle Fire Tablet
Interested to see what type of web browser they ship on these new devices.
julianb··on Rails 3.1 shipping with CoffeeScript
Jose Valim commented on the commit:

This is going to be in your generated Gemfile only. It can still be swapped, removed or replaced as everyone is used to do when it comes to prototype/jquery.

julianb··on Salary negotiation for engineers
Absolutely. Would love to read more about your thoughts on negotiating contracts.
julianb··on Salary negotiation for engineers
The five tweets:

1) Salary negotiation for engineers in 5 tweets: Never, ever reveal past salary information or your salary floor. #salarynegotiation

2) Every number in your contract is subject to negotiation. Hear otherwise? They're lying for advantage. #salarynegotiation

3) We are all businessmen here. Insecurity will not be rewarded with karma. Competency will not be viewed as greed. #salarynegotiation

4) Always have a counteroffer. Always have an option to walk away from the negotiation. #salarynegotiation

5) It is a seller's market now for talent. If they don't budge, firm handshake and wish them well in their search. #salarynegotiation

julianb··on Imagine K12
This reminds me of SchoolTool - http://schooltool.org/

It's a project conceived by Mark Shuttleworth, the Ubuntu project founder.

julianb··on Today, Web Development Sucks
Google built the GWT so they didn’t have to write code twice, but I don’t want to be stuck in the Java world or be forced to learn the whole GWT and make any open source buddies of mine learn it too.

Groovy/Grails works well with GWT. Idiomatic Groovy looks more like Python than Java. Another possibility is Vaadin, which is built on GWT.

julianb··on Obama calls Steve Jobs' success prime example of American wealth
Most of Jobs' wealth comes from shares of Walt Disney Co. that he received when the media conglomerate acquired Pixar in 2006. Disney shares recently hit a 52 week high of $38.

I'm surprised that most of Jobs' wealth comes from the sale of Pixar. Even with Apple's stock price ($323) valued at nearly 9 times the value of Disney ($37).

julianb··on Java Build Systems - a sad state of affairs
Another one that's missing from the discussion is Gradle.
julianb··on Code Like a Pythonista: Idiomatic Python
I think the "names" illustration refers to dynamic typing and points out that assignment creates an association between a name and a value. Differs from C where a name represents a fixed size and location in memory.
julianb··on Top ten essential Emacs tips
Regular expression search and replace is also killer.
julianb··on Interview with Donald Knuth
I've used noweb (http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/nr/noweb/) with Python and Emacs for about a year. Not for everyone, but I love it.
