jxi··on JetKVM – Control any computer remotely
Is this even detectable? Doesn’t it just show up as a regular mouse and keyboard?
jxi··on Why We Migrated from Neon to PlanetScale
TiDB is another option in this space which claims to be even cheaper and auto-scaling than PlanetScale.
jxi··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
I think they're talking about just the murder-for-hire. It may have just been undercover agents the whole time and no murders actually occurred.
jxi··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Strange that issue types is only available if your repository is part of an organization. Why is this not configurable at the repository level?
jxi··on GitHub Git Operations Are Down
GitHub Actions are also failing with 500 (gateway timeout) errors when trying to fetch the repository.
jxi··on Adobe Lightroom's AI Remove feature added a Bitcoin to bird in flight photo
You have to click into it as it's not visible from the preview.
jxi··on Bluesky is currently gaining more than 1M users a day
I was skeptical but I just opened it and the UI does look cleaner and less bloated than X. However, UI is fixable and what matters more is content. There needs to be a compelling reason to switch, and I don't see one yet.
jxi··on Is Telegram really an encrypted messaging app?
I haven't used Signal in a while, so I probably misremember some of what it supported. I just looked it up though and Signal's delete feature seems to leave a "This message was deleted" placeholder like what Facebook Messenger does, which looks a bit annoying to me (https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360050426432-De...). Telegram just directly removes the message for everyone.
jxi··on Is Telegram really an encrypted messaging app?
Signal has probably the worst UX of any messaging app. It also used to require sharing phone numbers to add contacts, which imo is already a privacy violation.

Telegram is fast, responsive, gets frequent updates, has great group chat, tons of animated emojis, works flawlessly on all desktop and mobile platforms, has great support for media, bots, and a great API, allows edits and deleting messages for all users, and I really like the sync despite it not being e2e.

jxi··on How Google handles JavaScript throughout the indexing process
I actually worked on this part of the Google Search infrastructure a long time ago. It's just JSC with a bunch of customizations and heuristics tuned for performance to run at a gigantic scale. There's a lot of heuristics to penalize bad sites, and I spent a ton of time debugging engine crashes on ridiculous sites.
jxi··on The Threads Creator Paradox
Nobody has ever linked me or talked to me about something on Threads, and the only reason I know it still exists is because of annoying ads on Instagram.

Is it a ghost town or am I just not the target demographic (what is the target demographic)?

jxi··on Private Cloud Compute: A new frontier for AI privacy in the cloud
Threads is far from mainstream and just filled with spam and OnlyFans spammers at this point.
jxi··on Microsoft says new Surface Pro is faster than 15" M3 MacBook Air
Macs have always had great battery life and the Apple Silicon chips took it to another level. It remains to be seen if any Windows laptop can actually consistently achieve their marketed battery life given Windows’ terrible track record for power management and proper sleeping.
jxi··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure
That was my impression too, that this was more of a thread to slander Telegram than anything.

The main leg that Signal has to stand on is it uses standard encryption, but it has all kinds of shady components like it used to require sharing phone number to contact someone, and the cofounder Moxie launched some MOB crypto scam which went to 0 and he has now quit the project too.

jxi··on The Disappointing Tea.xyz
If anything this makes me seriously rethink my use of homebrew. I already had security-related concerns around it, but the fact that he launched this weird crypto thing that's going to cause a lot of spam on GitHub is pushing me even further away.
jxi··on Hono v4.0
Don't you need a built step to transpile Typescript anyway?
jxi··on Dax – Cross-platform shell for Node.js
Bun also has a shell: https://bun.sh/blog/the-bun-shell
jxi··on Sheryl Sandberg to Leave Meta Platforms Board After 12 Years
I agree, but there's an army of bots that will vote down and try to silence any points like this.

I simply don't use anything related to Meta and tell others to do the same.

jxi··on Unlock Complex Time Series Analysis in SQL with Range Queries
QuestDB had a recent similar but probably clearer blog post about time-series specific SQL queries: https://questdb.io/blog/olap-vs-time-series-databases-the-sq...
jxi··on Meta's new Threads, a rival for X, is now Apple's most downloaded app
I'm sick and tired of getting notifications about Threads when I'm on Instagram.

The notifications are very hard and sometimes impossible to turn off. I like Instagram, but I couldn't care less about Threads. Being forced to get these notifications constantly gives me a strong urge to nuke my profiles on both apps.

jxi··on UniFi Express
I haven't experienced any instability with personal routers to be honest.
jxi··on UniFi Express
What would I get from this both hardware and software-wise that I don't get from ASUS routers?
jxi··on Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board
It sounded like they would if they could (for instance trying to sell to Anthropic or instating a "slow it way down" CEO), but they even failed at that. Not an effective board at all.
jxi··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Right, so getting Sam fired was retaliation for that.
jxi··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Was this really motivated by AI safety or was it just Helen Toner’s personal vendetta against Sam?

It doesn’t feel like anything was accomplished besides wasting 700+ people’s time, and the only thing that has changed now is Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley are off the board.

jxi··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
Again, who's stopping her from publishing research papers? She felt threatened and decided to retaliate by orchestrating firing Sam.

They likely violated RICO by essentially nuking the company's valuation and trying to sell to Anthropic. That is a crime, by the way, so they don't seem above that.

They haven't given even a clear reason for firing Sam. "Not being candid" with no evidence doesn't sound like it directly violates "the charter", but you can really argue anything when you're just "interpreting" the charter.

Anyway, you can make infinite excuses for their actions and justify them infinite ways. Hopefully you agree that the current situation is a giant mess, and it's caused by their narrow misguided interpretation of their job, and it's at the expense of basically everybody else.

jxi··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
How far should she go to fulfill her interpretation of that duty? Should she even commit crimes in order to keep the non-profit mission? There's 700+ employees that disagree with her interpretation of the company's mission, and yet she stubbornly maintains that hers is correct and that it's her duty to destroy the company (or even sell it to Anthropic) to fulfill her duty.

This is delusion, and she thinks she's some hero that's saving the world by keeping it a non-profit when in reality it's just creating needless chaos and even impacting innocent people's livelihoods.

jxi··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
Is that worse than people who defraud and steal from users and hold entire companies hostage for their own motives?

In EA, the ends always justify the means, so that includes doing any or all of the things you mention if it achieves some ideological goal.

jxi··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
But she was biased. She seemed so biased against her own company that her intended course of action seems to be to destroy it.
