Bicycles work to all ages, all abilities.
In your case an ebike, trike (etrike?) or even mobility scooter might be a much lighter, cheaper, scalable option.
Hey why not a self-driving e-scooter? Why does it have to weight 2 tons in the first place?
Bike infrastructure is not only for bicycles: its for trikes, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, ebikes.

Ok, a bit sci-fi but I had to say it.
Build them and they will come.
Cycle infra is not only cycle lanes. Cycle lanes are needed only where cars move fast (>30kmh). What is even more important is traffic calming in residential streets. LTNs, modal filters etc. Build for people, not cars.
30k is a good daily ride. Keep it up!
Do you perceive bicycle as a poor man's mode of transport?
Rich countries is where everyone can travel by public transport or bicycle (or car). Poor countries is where everyone HAS to travel by car (locked in car dependency)
I see what you are trying to say: its better to cry and have wealth than to cry and not have wealth. But bike=poor, car=rich is not a good analogy. It sends the message bikes/public transport are for loosers, when its not. Well it might be in car-centric societies, but not in more fair societies.
You should teach how to build those streets for people first, bicycles second, public transportation third, cars last.
Build for people not for machines.
Bicycle are all age inclusive, all ability inclusive. Cars is the most discriminatory mode of transport.

Private car is space and energy inefficient, and car infra is hostile to cycling and walking.
Build for what you want (walking, cycling, public transport), not for what you have (private car).
Yes its a massive no-brainer. Amazing how we as a society fail to see this.
Fancy futuristic magic tech isn't going to save us.
This sounds like the flying-cars-solves-traffic BS: dark PR funded by the Fossil Fuel industry.

* climate change is term coined by Big Oil PR to make global warming sounds less scary -
Cycling is not a tour-de-france style of cycling, most ppl can easily cycle 20kmh without much effort...
And why focus only on commute? Commutes benefit more from public transport.
cycling is optimal for short distances, errand-type of trips: nearby shop, school, pharmacy etc
It the least discriminatory mode of transport: it caters to all ages, almost-all abilities (1). It give you free exercise, its good for the environment, for the community, for the local economy (small commercial shops benefit from cycle infra, ask notjustbikes and search it)
The reason we dont use the bicycle more often is because cars. Cars monopolized our streets taking most of the space making conditions too hostile for many to cycle. We then built cities (actually bulldozed cities) for the car and now distances are just too big (specially in the US).
Build cities for people not machines.
(1) I am including trikes and wheelchairs, and anything on wheels powered by humans.
The US has done many many breaches of international law since post-WW2
What might also happen is some sort of "risk compensation": the fossil fuel industry, politicians, and regulators will relax their stance against fossil fuel extraction because "CC takes the CO2 off the atmosphere" - like they did with plastics - and when we notice it, the net emission of CO2 per year will never decrease.
Those are real dangers.
Keep the oil in the ground.
Some insights:
* traffic noise (soundscape pollution) is actually suspected to be the biggest ecological destructor affecting all levels of life from insects, to birds, to mammals.
* Traffic-related noise accounts for over 1 million healthy years of life lost annually to ill health, disability or early death in the western countries in the WHO European Region. (a)

"We pretend that the government was at best just in the background creating the basic conditions (skills, infrastructure, basic science). But the truth is that the involvement required massive risk taking along the entire innovation chain: basic research, applied research and early stage financing of companies themselves.”
Our streets have become hostile to anything but cars.
