I’m unclear why this isn’t just a PR template with a checkbox
kaveet··on City Roads: A tool to draw all roads in a city at once
Google Maps and most other maps will happily hide streets depending on your zoom level

kaveet··on Show HN: Gleam.so – Beautiful OG images in seconds, no design skills needed
OG = OpenGraph (like ‘og:image’)
kaveet··on Video scraping: extracting JSON from a 35s screen capture for 1/10th of a cent
> You should never trust these things not to make mistakes, so I re-watched the 35 second video and manually checked the numbers. It got everything right.
kaveet··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm working on planning next year's Square Foot Garden and building some tools to help me figure out staggering and succession planting--trying to be self-sufficient this year. I'm also working on a cookbook that focuses on "composable" meals and minimizing kitchen waste.
kaveet··on Flaw has Microsoft Authenticator overwriting MFA accounts, locking users out
Microsoft admin isn’t my day job, but I dealt with this exact thing the other day—the toggles for Microsoft Defender MFA are spread across Entra ID policies, Registration Campaigns, per-user settings, and more Microsoft subdomains I’d never heard of. After two hours the best I could do was add a Skip button to the MFA prompt when our users sign in.
kaveet··on Open source tools to query OpenStreetMap
Makes perfect sense. Would it be frowned upon to contribute these POIs using automated scrapers? Or does OSM prefer hand-collected, seen-it-in-person data?
kaveet··on Open source tools to query OpenStreetMap
Has anyone else run into big gaps in OSM data? I’ve tried to cobble together a store locator with Overpass Turbo, and even though the queries look correct I’ll still get fewer results compared to Google Maps. Sephora and Walmart locations in the US, for example.
kaveet··on Ask HN: Vision Pro owners, are you still using it?
If you’re mirroring your Mac, the computer’s mouse/keyboard/trackpad work across both the virtual screen and Vision OS’s interface. You can also pair Bluetooth peripherals directly to the headset.
kaveet··on Ask HN: Vision Pro owners, are you still using it?
I’m still using Vision Pro for about 10-15 hours each week, but the bulk of that is spent mirroring my Mac or having focused writing time using the Obsidian iPad app—there really aren’t apps that take full advantage of the platform yet (and I don’t watch a lot of movies). Still, it’s been the best way to stay productive away from my desk. The launch was a bit rocky with bugs and missing features, but the recent updates to mirroring and keyboard/mouse support are starting to hint that Apple is focusing in on productivity as a first-class use case. I’m okay paying the premium knowing that this platform has the potential to keep heading in this direction. It feels like the hardware has a decent amount of headroom.

kaveet··on Apple is reportedly spending ‘millions of dollars a day’ training AI
As you're typing in the search term, you're also given a "Name contains <term>" option in the dropdown if you're strictly searching by filename
kaveet··on Show HN: Chat with your data using LangChain, Pinecone, and Airbyte
That's disappointing to see, and posted within 10 minutes no less.
kaveet··on How VSCode made bracket pair colorization faster (2021)
This might be my own personal experience, but one effect of my colorblindness is that I place far less emphasis on color-coding in the real world--I'll subconciously ignore things like status indicators. When I think of alternative solutions here, I tend to reach for variables like font weight instead.
kaveet··on How VSCode made bracket pair colorization faster (2021)
Any interest in working together on a new extension?
kaveet··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
The fine was $615 thousand, not $615 million. Although I might agree with your original statement too.
kaveet··on Like the macOS Dock but for macOS System 7
Enjoyed this bit from the README:

kaveet··on GitHub Actions Down / Degraded
We subscribe to GitHub’s RSS feed in one of our vendor notifications channels, and it’s been super noisy in the last few months:

https://www.githubstatus.com/history

On one hand GitHub seems a little more proactive than most when it comes to raising incidents and updating status pages, but we’re getting a little too used to pausing our deploys in the middle of the day.

kaveet··on Show HN: Link Book – Quickly save links from around the web to GitHub

kaveet··on Tips for a healthier Postgres database (2021)

kaveet··on Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
The Aviation Herald for great coverage on commercial aviation news and incidents.

Their incident breakdowns are a lesson in clear technical communication—I highly recommend checking them out even if you’re not into aviation.

kaveet··on Show HN: A highly opinionated, fully functional Obsidian vault
“Let structure emerge” is my rule of thumb any time I pitch Obsidian.
kaveet··on Cobalt – a stripped down Chromium for apps, Linux and embedded systems
Cobalt isn't a great fit for general-purpose web browsing because it only supports a subset of HTML--lots of websites would appear broken. It's really meant for webapps you've designed with Cobalt in mind.

Check out the supported features:

kaveet··on Ask HN: Recent uptick in spam emails and text messages?
On iOS I’ve been using Bouncer to filter out SMS and iMessage spam using regexes. It’s been surprisingly effective to filter out messages that contain non-https URLs:

kaveet··on Tell HN: Citus is 100% open source now

kaveet··on Get your work recognized: write a brag document (2019)
Another habit I’ve made is sending praise via e-mail and CC’ing a manager, especially when great work would otherwise go unnoticed. For my peers this can be a level of sponsorship and visibility they haven’t received before, and for their managers this becomes a resource similar to a brag document when it comes to reviews. It’s 5-10 minutes out of your day but it can be hugely impactful for someone who might not normally advocate for themselves in these situations. Thank your teammates!

Did you look at self-hosted runners for your use case?

kaveet··on Heightened dream recall ability linked to increased creativity, connectivity
This was my experience too. Although it’s been 5+ years since I actively tried to lucid dream, I still have nearly the same level of dream recall and average 1-2 accidental lucid dreams per month.

The app looks wonderful! It might be the perfect excuse for me to get back into it. I’d love to maybe discuss some of your recommended reads—I’ll drop you a note.
