kbrisso··on Borland Turbo Basic
VB5 Pro was one of the best IDE's I have ever used. You could literally write code as you debugged. This sounds dangerous and is, but It helped me understand how programming actually worked. F1 context help was a great idea and super helpful - MS ruined it with MS Developer CD and it was super slow. I decided to get into programming because in Junior college we built a pizza ordering client server and had two IDEs opened in debug mode and you could step through it from client to server. I bought a $2000 computer and VB5 Pro for $55 at a computer show and got into VB Access programming job. Borland was kinda fading away out when I started programming and MS products were taking over the campus.
kbrisso··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Predicting El Niño vs. La Niña vs. neutral: relatively reliable. Predicting how strong the El Niño will be: harder. Predicting exactly what it will do to rainfall, temperatures, storms, or snowfall: substantially less reliable.
kbrisso··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I think we are pulling in the driveway.
kbrisso··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
The reason for the drop, I think you might be keto adapted. If you had < 20 grams of carbs you might be using all the ketones in your blood. If you can tolerate MCT oil you can use it as a ketone boost.
kbrisso··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
I'm 56 and have been experimenting with it. It definitely helps me stay laser focus on a task. I take between 10 to 15 grams a day in multiple doses. It does help with brain fatigue if you don't sleep well either. I'm also on keto diet and it helps me at the gym. Here is the thing everyone's DNA is different - keto works for me because I have tried it on and off. I have way more energy off carbs. I can also tolerate creatine, some people can't.
kbrisso··on Show HN: LocalRAG – Ask AI about your own documents (iOS/Android)
This is not completely local and not private. You are still sending info to third parties. Local definition is everything runs local, it does not include sending info to third parties.
kbrisso··on Americans are destroying Flock surveillance cameras
I agree. The amount of cameras and tracking has gotten out of control. If America actually becomes an "authoritarian" country (seems almost likely) I imagine all these Flock pics with other data mining techniques will be used to send Communist Progressives to reeducation camp.
kbrisso··on CSS sucks because we don't bother learning it (2022)
AI does CSS well!
kbrisso··on So you wanna build a local RAG?
The vector search works great once you figure it out. I wanted to focus on writing the application and not have to rewrite a document store.
kbrisso··on So you wanna build a local RAG?
I built this for local RAG https://github.com/kbrisso/byte-vision it uses llama.cpp and Elasticsearch. On a laptop with 8 GB GPU it can handle a 30K token size and summarize a fairly large PDF.
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
It's like a bad dream.
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
I'm a libertarian until it comes to human safety and corruption. We need regulations to regulate greed. I also believe in privacy and personal freedom as long as you don't hurt others. If you want to come to this country and work - please come and do so. Freedom isn't a flag on a truck or to poison the well and the and die from drinking poisoned water.
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
The scary thing? Who says Trump is going away?
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
Who needs mandatory id systems? State ID's and passports work just fine. What if I don't want an ID?
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
I agree.
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
What if they scanned you and the result was illegal alien? How would you feel?
kbrisso··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
This is America and we shouldn't have to put up with this. We shouldn't allow mask men running around terrorizing people because of race. But we can't stop it. American freedom is about being free from this form of harassment. American freedom is about being left alone to make something for yourself and your family. America is built on a bad marriage and is not perfect but to let this administration continue to do these types of illegal acts and cause one constitutional crisis after another is the down fall of this country in my opinion. As far as I'm concerned there will be no more elections in the future. What do we do then?
kbrisso··on Exile Economics: If Globalisation Fails
Free trade along with capitalism has brought more people out of poverty than any other economic theory/system. It's not perfect but you can't deny it's impact.
kbrisso··on Show HN: I built a Privacy First local AI RAG GUI for your own documents
I chunk the documents and use Elasticsearch to store the vectors. On a laptop with 8GB of GPU I can have a pretty large context window and not hallucinate.
kbrisso··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Byte-Vision is a privacy-first document intelligence platform that transforms static documents into an interactive, searchable knowledge base. Built on Elasticsearch with RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) capabilities, it offers document parsing, OCR processing, and conversational AI interfaces.

kbrisso··on They're Close to My Body: A Hagiography of Nine Inch Nails and Robin Finck (2020)
With Teeth is his first sober album. He wanted the stripped back rock feel so it would sound different from the previous.
kbrisso··on Ghost artists on Spotify
I don't like Spotify's business model. This is why I use Deezer as my streaming service. Deezer pays the artist more and has Hi-Fi streams. Streaming is killing the music industry and quality because it pays crappy royalties.
kbrisso··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Why do people vote for him? America is a closet racist country and the education system obviously doesn't produce critical thinkers. The south is poor and Trump will make them money again some how - they believe that. Trump will make grocery prices' go down and create many magnificent jobs. Trump will make interest rates go down and loans cheaper. He will deport all the Mexicans so the black or white people can fill the jobs.Trump is a populist con man who conned his base. No public company or start up will ever hire a CEO like him. I call this political entropy. This is the decline in America in my view. It's a sad day and I will just stick my head in the sand and hope we make it through.
kbrisso··on Chain-of-thought can hurt performance on tasks where thinking makes humans worse
Bingo, great reply! This is what I've been trying to explain to my wife. LLM's use fancy math and our language examples to reproduce our language but have no thoughts are feelings.
kbrisso··on The science behind on-the-wrist blood pressure tracking
I don't check my blood pressure every day. Maybe twice a month or when I feel like crap. I also check my glucose. Why? I believe if I keep myself in check I will keep myself out of the hospital as I age. High blood pressure and diabetes are two things I can manage. I don't want to be on meds unless I absolutely have to. Exercise and these tools allow me to figure out what I can eat and not. I'm not obsessed with my health or a health "nut". The upside is I don't get sick that much and feel good.
kbrisso··on The science behind on-the-wrist blood pressure tracking
Measuring blood pressure on the wrist is tricky. I usually do three measurements to get an accurate reading. I have two machines I use. The older one is actually better than the new one. Another thing is, pay attention to how you feel. I can feel my blood pressure when it's high and usually know when the device reading is off. I do this because my family has a history of high blood pressure and so far because of lifestyle choices I have avoided the need for meds.
kbrisso··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Subscribed! I'm guessing that nothing needs to be done to let my friends know? It just works?
kbrisso··on Why is the ocean salty? (2022)
I love facts like this, thanks!
kbrisso··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
One of the cable networks had a guy make the shot from the exact same height and distance. After I watch that episode I'm convinced it happened that way. What really makes it a conspiracy is how RFK covered up the political on goings in the White House. JFK was doing thing politically not popular in America, in an effort to cover this up RFK rushed the funeral, medical exam and burial to put those things to rest.
kbrisso··on Remote workers are increasingly less productive, anxious, depressed and lonely
"The research, which is not yet peer-reviewed, was based on 2400 employee responses across five surveys between 2021 and 2022." Why is this even allowed to be posted?
