kdtop··on CoRncrete: A corn starch based building material
Perhaps they have to seal it so water doesn't get in.
kdtop··on 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 recreated via reverse engineering (2021)
It's a cool name if it is a good product. If it is less-than-stellar, though, it's not that far from "face-palm". LOL
kdtop··on Raw footage inside Sears with Atari 800 and 2600 (1982) [video]
I lived at that time, and I don't remember it looking like that. All the colors are washed out!
kdtop··on Ask HN: What is your experience with SSRIs?
If someone is very nervous about the Rx, they can be started at 5 mg to minimize potential side effects.
kdtop··on How will a doctors profession change by tech in the next 10 years?
Medicine is not all about diagnostics. Much of it is also about case management. Encouraging people to do the things that they should have learned from their mothers. Probably 80% or more of my intellectual work as PCP I suspect could soon be accomplished by a computer. Buy many seniors (who tend to need more medical care) don't want to interface with a computer and prefer instead to have a human being that they trust and who they know are working to help them. Once you get your medical care from a computer screen, ala' getting money from an ATM, things will change.

But I agree that the future is likely to change, as it becomes easier for non-medical persons to access and understand medical information and recommendations. It will just then come down to regulatory barriers. When will a computer be given a medical license? 20 years? 50 yrs? 5 yrs?

kdtop··on Cloudflare mitigates a record of 26M request per second DDoS attack
Are all those infected machines, that create the DDoS attack, tracked and labeled? I.e. is their cover now blown? Or do they live on to attack another day?
kdtop··on The rise of computer-generated, artificially intelligent influencers
Seems like the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (source material for Blade Runner movie), had a big scandal where a popular TV personality was revealed to be an AI. Seems tame now.
kdtop··on GPT-3 may be a squirrel
This is funny. But when will the day come that we can't make them look ridiculous, but yet they are still not reliable -- and yet too many will be looking to them for guidance on life's big questions? Thus this is funny, but also sobering.
kdtop··on Who owns the copyright to my medical images? (2018)
U.S. doctor here. I think "ownership" is not the correct way of thinking about this. I would argue that "access" is the better concept. If a dentist creates an xray in his office, then she should have access to the image to be able to prove that she provide standard-of-care treatment should claims of malpractice be leveled. A patient of this dentist should also have ready access to this as it is their body and their information. And perhaps an insurance company may require that they have the right to access the image and ensure the dentist is no submitting fraudulent charges. And many more examples could be created. Throw in privacy considerations adds yet another wrinkle. Again, I think "ownership" or "copyright" is not the best concept.
kdtop··on Reversing hearing loss with regenerative therapy
Let's talk about money. How much is a reasonable total cost like this for restoration of hearing? $10k? $100k? $1 million? More? Next, what do readers think the cost will actually be?
kdtop··on Melody – a language that compiles to regular expressions
I have never taken the time to learn RegEx stuff. It seems like it would be great if I could keep all the syntax in my head. So the idea of Melody seems great. I don't like that the github description claims it to be unstable currently. I hope this project continues and flourishes.
kdtop··on Two weeks later David Bennett is alive, his pig’s heart beating soundly
Yeah, that caught my eye. I did a little research and the first xenotransplant of any kind was somewhere about 1838 -- of a cornea from a pig (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684730/)
kdtop··on NetShears: iOS Network monitor/interceptor framework written in Swift
Is this a man-in-the-middle tool?
kdtop··on Open-source tests of web browser privacy
To me, it seemed that if a browser had passed every test, the user might not be able to use many web sites. Perhaps the current status is a conscious decision by developers to keep users from hating their browser. Security vs usability.
kdtop··on Films with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes
Why don't I recognize any of the titles? Do you have to be obscure to get 100%?
kdtop··on Jetson ONE – ultralight and extremely fun to fly recreational VTOL aircraft
Cost: if you have to ask, it's too expensive??
kdtop··on Everyday Sexism Could Stop You from Getting That Promotion
Great article. Thanks
kdtop··on Is Web Scraping Legal?
I found the article overall useful. It seems to me that this issue is still not completely resolved, esp world-wide. The author gives disclaimer that they are not a lawyer, and then give what seems like their opinions. They give a scattering of references to court cases. But it seems they could have done a better job of giving proof for their claims. (UPDATE: The latter part of the article does better than the first.)
kdtop··on There Should Be One Billion Americans – Matthew Yglesias (2020)
With people come amazing opportunities to get things done. Yes, pollution comes along with the rise. But it is fascinating to me to think what could be done if we could find a way to live that didn't increase green house gasses etc.
kdtop··on Monodraw: ASCII art editor for the Mac
Today I learned... one more thing that emacs can do!
kdtop··on Beverly Cleary has died
Did you hate them as a kid, or as an adult reading them to kids?
kdtop··on Kevinism
Doh! My name is Kevin.... probably too late to change it now...
kdtop··on 26 Years of Delphi
I have a love-hate relationship with Delphi/Pascal. Love the language and what I can do with it. Hate the buggy IDE. Love that fpc is n open-source pascal compiler. Hate the the Lazarus IDE was difficult to use (when I last tried it a few years ago). Sad that so many comments talk about pascal in the past tense.
kdtop··on U.S. Bill H.R.69 introduced – To make daylight savings time permanent
Well, there goes my garden. Messing with the hours of sunlight screws the plant's growth all up... :-\
kdtop··on Self-Driving A.I. In Action
Looks 99% reliable. I mean it is cool that it tracks all the surrounding items. But there is very little surrounding traffic. And the weather looks perfect. What about dog or small child running out into the street in that neighborhood? I'd like to see it's performance in extreme situations. Still, all told, very impressive. Just makes me nervous.
kdtop··on The State of Linux Debuggers
I feel this review is overly harsh. I felt the author was showing that many of the packages were not intuitive and were often buggy. He was showing me what I could expect when I might try them. When one expects one's users to RTFM, they've already lost.
kdtop··on Pointer Pointer (2012)
Today I learned that the internet is AWESOME.
kdtop··on A New Theorem Maps Out the Limits of Quantum Physics
My understanding was that Bell's theorem rules out hidden LOCAL variables, but doesn't address or rule out hidden GLOBAL variables. Bohmian mechanics haven't been disproven, right?
kdtop··on Iron Powder Passes First Industrial Test as Renewable, Carbon Dioxide-Free Fuel
The reason we burn fossil fuels is because we can pull the oil out of the ground and utilize the stored energy. This seems like a different situation than is being described with using iron oxide as a sort of "battery", that will have to later be recharged (reduced away from iron oxide). Thus it seems more like a mechanism for utilizing previously stored energy than as a readily available energy source waiting for exploitation.
kdtop··on A small but complete JavaScript engine
Serious question, why is this a joke? Couldn't javascript be just another language to replace bash?
