kesava··on Mystery in the Moon
Rebecca Boyle’s Our Moon talks a lot about this. A fascinating read!
kesava··on The McPhee method for writing deeply reported nonfiction
For me, it’s "The Pine Barrens". It’s boring, but he did make it interesting. For a while, at least.
kesava··on A.I. Is Homogenizing Our Thoughts
the comments on this post are pretty diverse.
kesava··on Apple Invites
The tussle between usability and security.
kesava··on Apple must ensure interoperability of iPhone with rivals, says EU
does this mean apple cannot come up with new features unless they support interoperability? Isn’t that taking away the incentive to innovate?
kesava··on Ask HN: Can you recommend some poetry?
pōtana's bhāgavataṁ, if you can read Telugu.
kesava··on How does the sky turn dark at night?
I miss the early academic internet with at least a couple of links every sentence. :)
kesava··on Why programming languages matter [video]
Piquant and jejune?
kesava··on Show HN: Tome, aka Tom's Editor – a new command-line text editor
That’s awesome! Can someone point me to a similar minimal web/editableContent implementation? Would love to learn from it.
kesava··on Average color of the NYC sky every 5 minutes
what a funny/scary thought :)
kesava··on Ask HN: Engineering managers, how do you “upskill” your team?
interesting. how do you get volunteers for this weekly meeting?
kesava··on Ask HN: What foreign languages do you know or want to learn, and why?
English. Does English count ? :)
kesava··on How Apple names things
iPhone followed the name iPod. I actually think iPad is great.
kesava··on Ask HN: How much longer will we have free access to ChatGPT?
as reasonable as that proposal sounds, i wonder if that will result in a whole market of asking questions on behalf of students.
kesava··on Oxford University Press’s new logo is unfathomably bad
Another example of "everything looks the same".
kesava··on Ask HN: Camera off during most of the meetings?
Me too. In fact, I have noticed I am far more attentive, when I turn off the camera and don't look at other people’s camera feeds.
kesava··on Ask HN: Why don't web browsers render Markdown yet?
I mean - one could argue they should render word and ppt documents as well. What are the trade-offs should be the question, dont you think?
kesava··on Sridhar Vembu built Zoho by questioning the conventional wisdom
I am an Indian, and I share this feeling. We have some very good writers and lots of mediocre ones, not to comment about this particular post, which i have not read. Anyway, Indian schooling does not focus on writing as a skill, as much as they do on math and science.
kesava··on Nightdrive
Was lot of fun staring at it for a long time. However, every driver using turn signals when they change lanes is not realistic :)
kesava··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
From independent India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru to current PM Narendra Modi - she met with a lot of them too.
kesava··on “Code” 2nd Edition Now Available
It seems to work for me. I see "It works!".
kesava··on Roe's overturn is tech's privacy apocalypse
Isn't Roe‘s sense of privacy different from tech‘s sense of privacy?
kesava··on Ask HN: What news subscription is worth it?
+1 for Economist.

Don't let the titles of New York Review of Books and London Review of Books fool you. They do much longer view of contemporary news but thru book review.

Most news is probably not worth following every day. The rearview mirror of a weekly magazine gives better context than trying to follow most news the same day when details are still ongoing.

kesava··on FP techniques that will help you write better JavaScript
This book is a great collection of concepts and techniques from a range of classic FP texts, reintroduced and reinterpreted for ES6.
kesava··on Amazon copied products and rigged search results to promote its own brands
It's fascinating all the ways this is unethical, but not illegal.
kesava··on Ask HN: What’s your 9/11 story?
I was in my fourth year of a five year undergrad/grad program at BITS Pilani, India. It was late in the evening as someone in the rec room caught a whiff off it while channel surfing. The TV played BBC World broadcast non-stop for the next 36 hours, and the whole dorm was glued to it.
kesava··on The American diversity meat grinder
"Asians" doesnt mean much, if it has to mean someone from the continent of Asia, given 60% of world population is from Asia.
kesava··on Why Russians do not smile (2002)
Wtf is a "Hindu" pm?
kesava··on Ask HN: Best Longform Articles?
Atchafalaya by John McPhee, New Yorker, Feb 1987: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1987/02/23/atchafalaya
kesava··on Ohm – A library and language for building parsers, interpreters, compilers, etc.
A ton of front end templating languages/frameworks. They involve compilers to different degrees, don't they?
