kfrzcode··on Vacations in the Soviet Union
20 + 10 = one full calendar month (that's 6 business weeks) of work.

You're asking for more than six weeks per year where you can just get paid for not working. Sure, there's plenty of holistic value-add to being a well rested, happy employee, but if the difference for your happiness and well-being is somewhere above having six weeks of paid vacation (plus assumed sick days as needed for actual sicknesses) and getting paid for doing nothing. . . what's that quantitative number, and how did you arrive there?

If your job is so stressful that the aforementioned six weeks plus sick days is not enough vacation for you to recuperate, you're likely underpaid, in the wrong field, or something else is driving your discontent. I'd suggest using your PTO to do some introspection and accounting for where those capacities may be needing some care.

I don't have trust for things, I build trust with other humans if earned, potentially dogs. Beyond that there's no reason to trust with objectivity and reason.

Digression aside, I would impress upon you I haven't claimed, nor do I believe what you're claiming I have. I am simply providing you with a slice of the larger original academic paper that provides great, rigorous, and peer-reviewed documentation of precisely what GPT is, and what it's trained on.

From this paper you'll perhaps gather an instinct that these folks working on this problem are widely aware of the extremely well-known concept of "open source knowledge" and were well considered in their application of pruning data to their needs.

I believe you'll perhaps further gather retrospective insight upon the idea that GPT is doing anything more than giving you a T9-predictive-autotext for the entirety of that dataset; meaning you can try to coax it into saying anything you want but if the p-values aren't right or the predictive potential of a given token "coming up next" isn't there, that's just.. how it goes.

It's data. It's not quite the tower of Babel, but we'll get there soon enough. Kind of like how all the fancy 3D video game rendering software that looks incredible these days is still just manipulating tuples and vectors with matrix calculations, stuff you could do on paper but why would you do that math to describe a picture when you could just draw it.

ChatGPT is just drawing the pictures (in this poorly chosen analogy), and giving us the cool graphics. The math is all pretty benign and based in the fundamentals of neural networks, not even the more fanciful CV and deeper trained NLP can get to.

Info-scientists, I wonder what the "rainbow table" of all language and ideas etc. that would be relevant to a latent language learning model would be... this is a wonder to me because I lack the sufficient knowledge and field expertise.

kfrzcode··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
To that extent, is there not a capital-N Natural bound even to math? I mean to say, consider the highest-order abstraction or system or whatever, and that itself is bounded by.. something - I suppose this is the ultimate philosophical question and exceeds what is pragmatic for human-sake, versus a pontificator's notions in passing.

Agreed; this is akin to the "woo" applied writ large to the lucid dreaming phenomenology; or anything "metaphysical" crossing into "empirical" -- I have a fondness for the UAP topic and it's poster child for this effect. I know there's a grain of truth in the bucket but the wackery is beyond my ability to dredge.
kfrzcode··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
> imperceptible

isn't that sort of cheating, when it comes to math?

It's "almost" the thing just not the thing

kfrzcode··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
It's because we live inside a spiral galaxy that's transitioning into a new galaxy type so we see through a spiral
kfrzcode··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
I'm astounded to see the coverage on this bury the lede; today was historic in that Starship has 2x the thrust of Saturn V, i.e. this was the biggest rocket ever. And they did it, extremely successfully. Their goal was to get the thing off the pad without ruining Stage 0 (launch/pad). Now the newer, shinier revisions get to go up and we'll see orbit attained this year probably. We'll have private Starship missions to the moon in the next president's term of office.

kfrzcode··on The least impactful way to spend $300M?
Hmm I didn't consider second-order impact, but still think it's gotta be one of the least impactful ways, strictly speaking. "Spending," is a loose term but if burning a sum of cash that large... maybe that's impactful to the climate
kfrzcode··on Don’t record your social life on an append-only social network (2022)
sigh I'm now old enough to watch yet another wave of "reinventing 2005 web dev again"

Did you know HTML and CSS are basically text files with some special organization that allow you to make really snazzy colors and marquees and stuff?

It's just a text file you can POST, too!

Super simple, use the same tools you use now.

Well, you'll need a browser to make it look pretty, but that's not the point right?

Lol, we're about 30 years late. Everything, all the bits, are slurped by the NSA. ECHELON started in 1970s with the big five brothers.

Here's some fun keywords to whet your whistles if you wanna:

Camp Williams Boundless Informant ICREACH MAINWAY DCSNet BULLRUN/Edgehill - NSA breaking encryption by intentionally weakening encryption schemes and stealing master keys.

kfrzcode··on The least impactful way to spend $300M?
Give everyone in America $1. That'll impact basically nothing.

Always curious what sort of monitoring is used here, pressure valves, temperature, could we assume there's ultra-high-FPS cameras at every useful vantage point? Would there be any vantage point you could put a camera(or other sensor) that wouldn't get destroyed in a catastrophic unplanned disassembly?

Turn off the feeds; don't listen to the talking heads. I'm not saying to be ill informed or under informed, but curate your information feeds such that they're challenging you to do due diligence; read journal articles that cite sources and avoid anything that has an advertisement like the bubonic plague.

Distend social media and focus on high-quality, low-throughput content. Rationality is not based in the vox of the masses.

kfrzcode··on Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes?
that was actually my point; it's not like you'd ask your CEO for permission to do work that was supplemented with StackOverflow; so just...do the thing that needs to get done, using the sources required to get'r'done
kfrzcode··on ChatGPT and Code Interpreter = Magic
This seems to resonate with me. I've got a bit of a tendency to experience spells of obsessiveness and if you get very pedantic and very wordy with GPT it espouses anything you tell it to that it conceptually could. Understanding human language to the max will be a useful skill because as with any agents communication is key to successful understanding
kfrzcode··on Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes?
I mean if the work could get done without ChatGPT then it's not getting done with ChatGPT any magnitude faster but it may help reduce the intervallic brain farts by being able to ask more than stack overflow has db results for

kfrzcode··on YouTube millionaires are not your friends
If those folks are only making $35k for 40 years they're losers with no impetus for self-growth or security. If they can make $35k a year they're capable enough to make $50k a year if they work hard to improve, start a business, create value.... if you don't, then enjoy your struggles. It's a dog eat dog world, right?
kfrzcode··on YouTube millionaires are not your friends
The path to modest generational wealth is pretty straightforward, pay off all your debts, don't borrow money, invest at least 15% of your income toward retirement in stable low-risk index funds or managed mutuals and leave it alone. Don't waste on big toys and you'll be a millionaire in a couple decades.

It's really really that simple. If your income is not enough to achieve the above state loop, then you'll need to put effort into increasing available income; whether by reducing expenses or increasing income by way of self education, career change, etc.

It's not hard. Anyone in America with $35,000/yr is in the 1% of the world's economic strata.

Alcohol is another massive killer. So are tobacco products. Processed food, and all of these factors are heavier on economically challenged folk.

Just saying it's not worth the outrage we've seen. Anyway we're ot.

kfrzcode··on Costs of the U.S.-Led War in Iraq Since 2003
No, I'm just elaborating that the police-brutality issue in America is actually not really as impactful and scary as one might think, and especially not as skewed toward targeting the black population disproportionately as many propagandists might have you think. Attempting to dispel a myth or at least learn along the way.

kfrzcode··on ViperGPT: Visual Inference via Python Execution for Reasoning
left to it's own devices I reckon it'd be a real feat to generate a GPT-based tool that takes over the world. What prompts? What's the most impressive thing?

Say we had a GPT bot that built it's own social media, somehow. How did it get there? what was the initial prompt? "write to yourself via this api to figure out audience growth until you gain 100k followers then wait for further instruction, use any tool and leverage this name and credit card number if you need to pay for any tools or supplies"

Idk just brainstorming really have no idea what it'll do. Will build this weekend and see what happens I guess.
