kickaha··on Matrix was worth the effort to self host
I took it to mean, worth it for the learnin’ and the fun messin’ around.
kickaha··on Ask HN: Does Hacker News still do in person meet ups?
But the beauty of it is that crap evaporates in real life. I don’t want to overstate it, of course, but the effect is always huge.
kickaha··on Analogies for Git (2016)
Came here to say: impressive how these metaphors are simultaneously so fascinating, presumably very insightful, and so unhelpful to a newbie trying to understand git.
kickaha··on Ask HN: What book have you re-read 3x or more?
Edward Said’s Representations of the Intellectual.

https://archive.org/details/representationso00said

Only a little over a hundred pages, and quite accessible—straightforward, even—but like other books in this thread full of profundities that take on different meaning as the reader passes through different seasons of life.

kickaha··on Ask HN: What LaTeX editor do you use?
Slightly surprised nobody has mentioned org-mode under Emacs. It’s a slightly orthogonal use-case, not strictly editing native LaTeX. But it does a million things well, especially organizing documents of various lengths, and then exports very nice LaTeX. Not just that you could subsequently tweak, but allowing includion of arbitrary LaTeX that also gets exported.

For many use-cases it can be much more efficient to step back and let the LaTeX get written for you.

kickaha··on Ask HN: What do you have in your office that inspires/amuses you?
Students often send me thank you cards after they graduate and I’ve covered a wall with them.

As the years go by it keeps growing and my reverence for my own responsibility to them keeps increasing.

kickaha··on Ask HN: Where to find people who love to learn?
My wife and I are both full-time academics. She has never worked outside academia (except a dirty menial job in high school). I dropped out, wrote code for a multi-billion-dollar non-profit, and had a bunch of menial jobs.

I don’t wanna say she takes the university life for granted, but I can’t say she understands what it’s like to work in a place where you’re the one and only curious, well-read person.

EDIT: janitors, bellhops, and waitstaff are much more interesting than office plankton. But there is no culture of reading and learning in either context.

kickaha··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
Golly, brother. I feel you all the way down to my toes. My parents just openly, declaratively resent my leaving misery behind for a rewarding and financially secure career.

Wanna hear the super effed up part? I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND their feelings! Like so many other modalities of code-switching I’ve learned, with just a little concentration I can go back and forth: having my kids do better than me is the main objective in life [VWOOP!!] the worst misfortune that can befall a parent.

kickaha··on [dead]
“I’m out.”
kickaha··on Ask HN: What are some keywords you track everyday?
“emacs” and “org-mode”
kickaha··on A functional definition to distinguish ponds from lakes and wetlands
Subtle point (addressed in the first sentence of the paper proper). “Lentic” bodies of water, those discussed here, means “still.” Presumably this means flux below some threshold.
kickaha··on Ask HN: How to not be intimidated by people with higher credentials?
You may be confusing class with credentials. (Leaving aside the accustomed confusion between credentials and ability.) Sorry to sound flippant, but I found it to be true: spend a lot of time with top level talent and you get used to it. On the other hand, if you have bad teeth or a regional accent, you might never overcome even the internal barriers.
