kid64on Attention is all you have

Thanks to you and @bradley for the explanation.

kid64on Attention is all you have

When you say "navigational queries" do you mean Google Maps?

If so, you may not be aware that the locations represented by square dots on the map are ads.

kid64on Bug Blindness

> I get that people who are fans of things tend to be blind to the thing's faults.

Wow, there's Obsidian, Kagi, and Apple in a nutshell.

kid64on Review: Chuwi's $449 Unibook laptop is a funhouse-mirror MacBook Neo

> It’s not even because everyone else's trackpads are fucking garbage (they are). It’s that systems that aren’t macs just weren’t built around using one.

Great news for users depending on accessibility

kid64on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail

PSA - A crucial detail about Fastmail's spam filter that should really disclosed more clearly is that your filter is only trained on email you flag from within the web UI. Invoking your email client's "move to spam via IMAP" function does not train the filter.

kid64on Fastmail offers EU data region

They're Australian

kid64on I Owe My Life to the Commodore 64

I suggest you run this by an actual doctor.

kid64on Summer of '85: DOSBOS is rejected by ANALOG Computing

That's not a trick. It's just how you list files. Same awkwardness as any other disk command.

kid64on Adafruit receives demand letter from Fenwick legal counsel on behalf of Flux.ai

I think it originally aired on MTV.

kid64on Mouseless – keyboard-driven control of macOS/Linux/Windows

“When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind, I don’t consider the bloody ROI.”

Well Tim, I suppose the blind do outnumber the handless.

Nor the Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future.

kid64on Don't put aria-label on generic elements like divs

The most infuriating case I've seen within the last few days is the Airbnb CAPTCHA, which relies on the user being able to see content that is blocked at zoom levels over 100%. They have an alternative audio option that they've clearly never tested; it always reports failure, even if the CAPTCHA was solved correctly. Unthinkable for an organization with their resources.

kid64on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian

Obsidian is just a shitty wrapper around CodeMirror, which does the actual heavy lifting. How much of the money should Obsidian hand over to the CodeMirror developer?

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48088576

What, no smiley face in those comments? Maybe a silly shrug would have been appropriate.

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

Just say "I think my users are stupid" and be done with it. The timing of your announcement is obviously not a coincidence. You are genuinely terrible at this.

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

For those that aren't aware, this is all meant to distract/confuse you in light of this story: https://cyber.netsecops.io/articles/obsidian-plugin-abused-i...

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

I realize you're just doing your job as CEO to shape perceptions here, but this is your best effort? The docs should have correctly stated "we don't review ANY new community plugin release". Hint: This is where you would admit the review process itself was meaningless theater intended to provide a false sense of security to users that trusted you.

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

In what universe is it trusted? This blog post is an admission that they've been lying to their userbase about their review process for years, with updates receiving no review whatsoever. Enjoy your mass exfiltration.

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

Wtf are you doing with all the money? Hire some actual engineers already, Jesus.

kid64on The Future of Obsidian Plugins

Maybe wait and see how this plays out. It's a cat and mouse, and the mice here are way smarter. Data exfiltration happens quietly.

kid64on Obsidian plugin was abused to deploy a remote access trojan

No I'm not. But I'd encourage you to visit and see for yourself why these outcomes are completely predictable.

kid64on Obsidian plugin was abused to deploy a remote access trojan

Yeah, but these attacks are possible without any of that complexity.

kid64on Obsidian plugin was abused to deploy a remote access trojan

This is just the first detected and reported instance, in all likelyhood such attacks have been happening for some time. When will the fanatic userbsse finally admit that using Obsidian in any enterprise setting is just plain malpractice?

It takes 5 minutes in their Discord channel to see the founders are D&D nerds, not competent engineers. It was never meant for serious work.

kid64on Obsidian plugin was abused to deploy a remote access trojan

That's horse hockey. Obsidian is not a usable system without community plugins.

Folks will reply "but I use it every day without plugins".

That position disregards software usability as a formal discipline, along with decades of UX research and standards.

kid64on Ask HN: Which is better–macOS/Windows/Linux?

Macs are great for watching cartoons, etc.. But for any serious work, you'll want a real computer.

kid64on Ghostty is leaving GitHub

An obvious pivot would be to Codeberg. Is there some missing feature there rendering such a move less desirable than I imagine?
