killdozer··on Twitter's new encrypted DMs aren't better than the old ones
It's explained in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJNK4VKeoBM
killdozer··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
Please, nobody ever left their doors unlocked all the time, if trust was _really_ that high there wouldn't have been locks at all.
killdozer··on Adobe employees slam the company over AI controversy: 'Avoid becoming like IBM'
no that's correct, it's the right content.
killdozer··on Quest 2 is outselling Quest 3
The quest 3 is almost 7 times cheaper than the vision pro (499 vs 3499) and provides incredible value for the price. I doubt very many people are actually going to buy the initial release of the vision pro, who is paying almost 4k after tax for a devkit besides developers and rich enthusiasts?
killdozer··on Cybertruck Launch
If you see a knife move away from it.
killdozer··on Russian oil sold to India at 30% above Western price cap, traders say
You don't actually believe this given the recent issue between these two countries do you?
killdozer··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
"Look, you're just FORCING me to become a 'neo-nazi follower' by helping these people too much!"
killdozer··on We don't have senior engineers anymore
If you can make a plan to solve a technical problem and execute on it in a successful way you're an engineer. There may be differing levels of expertise and "rigor" but we should be more generous with the title if anything. There are a lot of extremely talented "non-technical" people out there building wild solutions with excel/zapier/etc... that deliver value and contain a ton of technical complexity but are very hacky and brittle, but at the end of the day it's still engineering.
killdozer··on Cities are suing car manufacturers over auto theft
Sure thing man we'll just solve crime lol.
killdozer··on Cities are suing car manufacturers over auto theft
The product is obviously defective compared to other manufacturers where this isn't a problem. This is not absurd it's pretty easy to understand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_liability
killdozer··on Fitch Downgrades the US Rating to 'AA+'
There's only one side holding the debt ceiling hostage, it's just a conservative problem.
killdozer··on Bitsummit 2023: Steam Decks everywhere, no VR, and impressive indie games
You don't even have to do any of this, you can compile for windows and use the SDK (once you've enabled developer mode in the steam deck settings and paired) (https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/steamdeck/loadgames) to add your packaged game as a new title. I've compiled and tested games from unreal 4 and Godot 3.something without issue using proton. Using the SDK vs ssh is really nice since it shows up in Steam automatically and updating is easy (just redeploy via the SDK). Be warned the SDK is windows only.
killdozer··on AI watches millions of cars and tells cops if you’re driving like a criminal
Searching through a database of license plates to determine cause for a stop is plainly a warrantless search, SCOTUS is a dumpster who bend over backwards for LE but lets not pretend there's any merit to most of these decisions.
killdozer··on Emerging architectures for LLM applications
This blog post is way more complex than it needs to be, a lot of what most people are doing with llms right now boils down to using vector databases to provide the "best" info/examples to your prompt. This is a slick marketing page but im not sure what they think they're providing beyond that.
killdozer··on Private equity is buying everything from vet offices to tech conglomerates
"My work helps people, don't listen to the ocean of negative examples about my industry."
killdozer··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
People like this don't see people poorer than them as humans with agency, they're just cattle or insects.
killdozer··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
These are people not a free source of labor.
killdozer··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
lmao not every law is "regulatory capture", sometimes laws make dangerous activities that most of us are forced into (like driving) a bit safer as better technology becomes available.
killdozer··on New Arkansas bill to keep minors off social media exempts most social platforms
The children yearn for the mines.
killdozer··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
Seriously, we're talking about a company that Microsoft invested 10 billion dollars into, this is very powerful technology that will affect our lives. They didn't invest all that money because it will make the world a better place, they did so because they see the opportunity to make a LOT of money and have the ability to steer where this technology goes while also reducing transparency. Why shouldn't we view that with suspicion, you don't have to roll over just because there's a lot of money involved or because some millionaire/billionaire might get treated "unfairly".
killdozer··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
Just because there's some bad stuff out there doesn't mean that opening the flood gates to higher amounts of more advanced bad stuff is acceptable. It's absolutely reasonable to look at a new technology and try to figure out if it is likely to bring about more harm than good and take action based on that assessment.
killdozer··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
"heckling should not enjoy freedom of speech" exactly, this is just the marketplace of ideas deciding that the speaker is either bringing nothing of value to the table or that his reputation for previous speech is too poor. The idea that a Federal Judge is somehow having his free speech rights violated by a bunch of college students is insane, the man has argued before the SCOTUS and has a lifetime appointment which allows him to affect the lives of millions of Americans. It's becoming increasingly clear that "Free Speech" is just the idea that the powerful speak and the commoners listen.
killdozer··on Apple fires hundreds of contract workers, previously assured jobs were safe
In a LOT of cases it's neither short term or temporary, you would be surprised how many temps/contractors/vendors/whatever at these companies have been there for years, sat at a desk in their buildings, learned their tech stacks and developed products, ate lunch at their cafeterias, etc....
killdozer··on Fentanyl vaccine tested in rats
`And possibly start using chemicals to alter your bone density and muscle mass.` Just when you think you've seen some depraved/inhumane takes you see someone suggest that actually this homeless person deserves to be where they are because they're not risking enough of their health by taking hgh/ped to get a meager paycheck as a bouncer at a bar where they could very well get stabbed or shot providing security for a bunch of tech workers that hate their guts.

` If you just half ass it and complain that the world is against you, you will not go anywhere` This man is homeless what are you talking about?

killdozer··on The Shit Show
Everyone should be a cold emotionless machine that pumps out code, just like me.
killdozer··on Ask HN: Can you log in to Twitter?
No, the error i get is for the url `https://api.twitter.com/1.1/onboarding/sso_init.json` and the error is "Over capacity" code 130. The client keeps looping on this call too so idk if the load will ever dissipate lol.
killdozer··on 6M Acres of Public Land in the US West Are Corner-Locked
`the sheriff is using their state powers to provide security for a wealthy private citizen` That's the reason though, the police exist to protect the property rights of the wealthy.
killdozer··on Cannabis is legal in most US states but federal laws block businesses from banks
`Sometimes market liberalization and conservative thinking does not go hand in hand. ` I would say it never has, but that the market liberalization and social conservative wings of the larger conservative party had an uneasy truce and their ultimate goals were always in conflict. Looking at the current conservative movement in the US and how they're pushing back against capital for being "too woke" (whatever that means) it's clear (at least to me) that the market liberalization wing lost a lot of power and doesn't seem to have too much pull anymore.
killdozer··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
The sudden spike of the use of the word "journalists" as a slur from the right is pretty wild to see in real time.
killdozer··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Thank god we have people like you looking out for the little guy.
