kimos··on PHP 8.2.35
They also have more to coordinate and manage. I don’t think it’s fair to frame it as them being bad at something. What they have to do is much harder, and it takes time.

When I’ve worked at small places, a security patch is bumping some versions and restating some servers.

I worked at a massive Rails shop for a decade and a big security bump meant mobilizing a team, coordinating updating dozens or hundreds of apps, all while maintaining platform stability and staying within SLAs. It’s a nightmare.

kimos··on Waymo in Toronto
Toronto gets snow! Do any other cities they operate in get snow?

So much of winter driving is knowing what is blocked by ice and snow, what snow is probably safe to pass, and navigating around piles of ice and snow that become temporary obstacles.

Granted Toronto gets much less accumulation than a city like Montréal.

kimos··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
Napkin math for me puts newer fridges at 4x more efficient. I’ve got cheap hydro power in Canada, but that would still be about $150/year more in electricity use to keep the old one.
kimos··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
It is rarely enforced though. And the pharmacies will just replace it and ship it again.
kimos··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
This is actually tragic.

I worked for an online pharmacy in Canada for many years, and it’s fraught and full of grey areas for sure. But so so many Americans count on importing generics to afford their medication. You’re talking several times the price difference for the same pills, life changing amounts of money for older people on fixed incomes with health problems. They will simply not be able to access their medication anymore.

kimos··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
There are many obvious differences, but Canada and Australia share many characteristics and I find myself comparing to Aussies. Similar population, massive landmass, population mostly contained in narrow stripes at the edges, ex UK colony, middle power, etc..
kimos··on iPhone Duo
In Canada they range from $3000-$4800. Absolutely bonkers prices.
kimos··on Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify
And based on Tailwind’s previous statements about AI impact on them and their business, it’s possible Shopify got a good deal.
kimos··on Nitter is unarchived and will continue
Links mostly. To organization or government agencies or whatever official that shares updates only in one place. (Which is bad)
kimos··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
Whelp. I’ve been using Gmail since it was invite only. Sending as my personal domain was grandfathered in. This is going to be my push to leave for another service. I wonder if they understand or intend that?
kimos··on Wiped out: US faces surging toilet paper prices amid trade war with Canada
Canadians may be nice but we are also petty and proud. It’s hard for us to win against a big bully, but we won’t be pushed around either.

Everyone is going to lose here.

kimos··on Walgit – a Git server that is one binary in front of an object store
He’s goal isn’t to camouflage. Shopify is full AI maximalism, and Tobi’s goal as the CEO is to prove that he can change the world with AI and that his employees should follow.

Up to the reader to believe it or not.

kimos··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Maple farms take decades to reach maturity. The US imports about 4x more maple from Canada than Vermont’s entire production capacity. It’s not possible.

So consumers will pay double or substitute with flavoured corn syrup.

kimos··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Quebec alone produces more maple syrup than everywhere else in the world combined, by a wide margin.
kimos··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
Perplexity does this on web by adding a logo in response to key combos for normal screenshot shortcuts.
kimos··on Stop sending me huge PRs; a rant
What does “accountability” mean to you here. Isn’t that the point of a reviewer to make them also accountable for the PR?

I think what you’re outlining here is an entire change to the code creation and merging process, not just adding an AI helper to the “coder”.

kimos··on World Train Map – 1247 train routes around the world
I wonder where the data is sourced. It has lots of detail about some VIA Rail routes in Canada and entirely misses others.
kimos··on The original URL for this prediction will no longer be available in 11 years (2011)
Flattening old things down to plain HTML is underrated and important here. Old apps don’t need to be updated or upgraded or maintained or even deployed. It’s way simpler to argue to keep old stuff around if it’s essentially a domain pointing to a static bucket.
kimos··on We replaced Redis with MySQL for inventory reservations and it scaled
I too have a positive view of Shopify engineers. But no longer Shopify management. It went from bottom up trust basted to top down AI first and for everything based. It’s very hard to express how deeply and completely the internal workings and culture of the company has changed. (Source: I am a long time former developer there.)
kimos··on How the words we teach English language learners changed
But you’re more likely to remember it. It’s not trying to be easier.
kimos··on Ruby Central's Destructive Legacy
Most recently he compared Roma people to wolves that should be exterminated, a post so openly racist that an LLM refused to translate it.
kimos··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
Yeah this is roughly the same. It’s just a smear of apps and no real assumption of anything sure to be shared.
kimos··on Just Let Me Write Digits
But you can just add the space back in! It’s a strict format of six characters, alternating digits and letters, with a space. There is no deviation. You can easily write a parser and a formatter for it. It kills me how often this is a struggle on forms.

Fun fact: even the “send a free letter to santa” is compliant by making his postal code “H0H 0H0”

kimos··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
Canadian here.

I have a WhatsApp account and the app on my phone with zero contacts in it. Nobody here uses it. But every time I leave the country I need it for some service or business or who knows what. It seems like the rest of the world all agreed to use this app and Canada (and I think the US) just said “naw thanks…” and have no common app or method.

kimos··on This blog is written in en-GB
Unfortunately en-CA is not really supported as a locale and we have to choose between en-US and en-GB. I’ll usually choose the latter, because despite more differences in language, there is more alignment between Canada and British English in spelling, units, and style.

I really wish en-CA was as well supported as fr-CA honestly.

kimos··on How Alberta Eradicated Rats
Whereas tens of thousands contract Lyme, often in life altering infections. Lyme is a big deal. But yes, I agree, we can both aim to reduce new disease without letting old vectors for disease back in.
kimos··on How Alberta Eradicated Rats
I care about the Lyme more than the rats tbh. That is way more likely to fuck you up long term than anything a rat will bring in this day and age. We aren’t getting the black plague anymore.
kimos··on How Alberta Eradicated Rats
I live in Ottawa and I watched a crow rip a dead brown rat apart in my front street this week. I don’t see them often but they’re here. (I swear I live in a nice neighbourhood)
kimos··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
It’s worth knowing the answer, but also the answer shouldn’t matter for most cases.

Regular users should only use these stations for road trips. Nearly all charging should be done with L2 chargers.

kimos··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
Manitoba is almost 100% powered by hydro, and exports something like 7TWh of power a year. You’re drawing your line in the wrong spot.
