kj01a··on Sexual harassment is rife in the sciences, finds landmark US study
Or... you could not pay your committee so they're not incentivized to find positive results.
kj01a··on China is now home to some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers
Well now I'm confused, is that not what their talking about in this article?
kj01a··on Why museum professionals need to talk about Black Panther
Only black people museums can have black people things. Racist bullshit.
kj01a··on Dear Apple, please fix notifications
Did iOS get rid of the "turn off banner notifications," or whatever it's called, in settings?
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Replied via email.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Well, I would have deleted my "rabid," "aggressive," and "unsubstantive" comments, but apparently you've decided your users don't deserve the right to retract statements when they get off topic.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Can I ask why I'm being singled out here?

Edit: And why can't I post anymore?

kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
When it comes to obesity the victim is to blame.

>I think it'd be a lot more challenging for someone to be obese with the same caloric amount of avocados than cheetos, for example

As I've said elsewhere, the fact that some foods are more calorie dense than other is irrelevant.

kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
No one is saying calorie intake should be constant.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
The fact that your body can change the number of calories it burn disproves nothing. For example, the more weight you lose the fewer calories you burn, thus your calorie intake must lower to sustain the same deficit.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
That paper is defining a calorie as the chemical make up of a particular macronutrient. Which is wrong. A calorie is a unit of measure of energy.

Plus, if something violated a law of thermodynamics, that law would have changed. And it hasn't.

kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
The change in internal energy is negligible. The only exception is medical disorder.

If you want to lose weight and you are not, eat less. If the amount you eat goes below say 1200 calories and you're still not losing weight, go to a doctor.

It's that simple.

kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Either thermodynamics is wrong, or you are undisciplined. Which do you think is more likely?
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
It's not helpful because some food are more calorie dense than others? How does that make sense?
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
No wonder the robots decided to use us for batteries.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
>Calories in, calories out is not the golden rule, and this has been scientifically proven false.

No. If the laws of thermodynamics had been proven false, we would have heard of it.

kj01a··on The psychology of why we're irrationally more scared of terrorism than guns
>Am I really that much of an outlier?

No. Most people just live. They go to work, they go home, they sleep, maybe have a few drinks on the weekends, but their lives are not driven by fear of some nebulous thing like guns or terrorism. As a general rule most people's lives are not affected by the scary things on the news, save for the content of their facebook timelines.

kj01a··on My Farewell to Twitter
>It must be just the very young crowd, that hasn't gotten completely sick of it by now

Also the older crowd. My mother loves telling me what she saw on facebook. I'd be willing to bet it's just the millennial demographic in the middle that shows low social media usage.

EDIT: Btw, which news sites?

kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
Yes, there is.
kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
He excluded the countries that were already excluded under Obama's executive orders on immigration. This isn't new foreign policy, just a strengthened one.
kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
> a strike is generally a work stoppage intended to force management to in some way

This is also a political protest. Just because it's not against the U.S. government doesn't make it less so.

kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
Everything is about optics. What world do you think you live in?

EDIT: I don't know what to tell ya, but downvoting doesn't make it less true.

kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
>This wasn't a strike, it was a political protest.

What's the difference??

kj01a··on Lyft surges to the top 10 on App Store following the “DeleteUber” campaign
Here is the letter they wrote for their blog:

>We created Lyft to be a model for the type of community we want our world to be: diverse, inclusive, and safe.

>This weekend, Trump closed the country's borders to refugees, immigrants, and even documented residents from around the world based on their country of origin. Banning people of a particular faith or creed, race or identity, sexuality or ethnicity, from entering the U.S. is antithetical to both Lyft's and our nation's core values. We stand firmly against these actions, and will not be silent on issues that threaten the values of our community.

>We know this directly impacts many of our community members, their families, and friends. We stand with you, and are donating $1,000,000 over the next four years to the ACLU to defend our constitution. We ask that you continue to be there for each other - and together, continue proving the power of community.

I notice that it diplomatically does not answer your question, only that it will donate for the cause. So I guess it depends on what you mean by "cooperate." They certainly didn't order their workers to strike (which would be dumb of them anyway.)

kj01a··on Calling Yourself ‘Humbled’ Doesn’t Sound as Humble as It Used To
Somebody's been listening to the Hello Internet podcast.
kj01a··on Why Peter Thiel Fears Star Trek
>Why do they need a crew of hundreds, when almost everything is automated?

I believe they do state in TNG that the galaxy class ship could doing everything on its own, and the crew was just there because of their love of discovery and what not.

kj01a··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
Yes! I am quickly learning that. It's not very intuitive for me anyway.
kj01a··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
I learning software engineering! Right now I'm using python to learn about OOP, because I've never really understood the paradigm. I figured it's high time I buckled down and figured it out. But to be honest, I think I'd like to try my hand at systems engineering if I get the chance to program professionally.

I am also learning Norwegian, because I want to talk like a viking.

And I am learning Go (Baduk). It is the type of game I will be learning for the rest of my life. Which is why it is my favorite :)

kj01a··on The True Size of Countries
Big block of cheese day is my favorite day.
kj01a··on Grumpy: Go running Python
Haha it's Ubuntu. After I downloaded Python 3.6 last night, I found out I had Python 3.4 already on my machine. I got excited about new software and forgot to check. It's a crutch :/
