koolba··on Democrats’ Secret Effort to Stack Alaska’s Ballot With Another Dan Sullivan
From the article:

> The Peltola campaign has repeatedly denied any involvement in his candidacy. But The Times has found, based on interviews and text messages, along with documents prepared for a potential lawsuit against the campaign, that not only did Ms. Peltola’s team work with people trying to recruit Mr. Sullivan to run for Senate, but the effort was much broader. The group worked to coax other would-be spoilers into the race, to dilute the incumbent’s support and help catapult the Democrat to victory.

If this is not election interference, get ready for some interesting future elections.

Imagine having multiple Donald Trumps or Hillary Clintons on the ballot with no reasonable way for an ordinary voter to differentiate between them.

koolba··on Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers
The smart man makes his own luck.

In some way ways, that’s what smart working does. Being at the right place, at the right time, because you were smart enough to realize you should hang around that place.

So that people with off the books defi assets can diversify their holdings as if they bought into the non-defi world, without any of those pesky taxes or KYC requirements.
koolba··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
> A meeting between all the stakeholders to agree on requirements easily runs $1,000/hour. Taking your $4 functional PoC into that meeting is going to save so much time..

It is though! Because previously your have the meeting last 4x as long to end up with a list of notes that you already knew.

Now you can generate the PoC, showcase it during the meeting and leave with actionable changes in project direction.

koolba··on Anthropic S-1
The interface being arbitrary text makes the moat even looser. The cost of experimentation with alternatives is getting lower and lower.

It’s going to be hard for companies to justify paying $1000s per month to frontier providers when they see what’s doable with open versions.

koolba··on The Goose Programming Language
These AI generated docs would make more sense if you instruct it to not include numbers unless they form a complete example.
koolba··on The Goose Programming Language
What does this mean (from your link):

> Nested data stays inline. A string, an array of strings, a record with variable-size fields and an array of those records are each one contiguous block with no pointer in it. A record that is 160 bytes and an allocation in C++ is 29 bytes and none in Goose.

I’m having trouble parsing that last sentence.

koolba··on CVE Tracker
But they don’t research, validate, or PoC anything. It’s a just a centralized place to issue unique ids and eventually publish a bunch of text.
koolba··on Mark Zuckerberg Pushed Meta to Shield Him from California's Proposed Wealth Tax
> … an index designed to track the 500 largest companies is required to exclude some of those just because they happen to be run by a guy you dislike?

Emotions about the executives and founders aside, it may be worthwhile to exclude securities with multiple concentrated voting classes (like Meta) or those with one owner with more than X% of the float (like SpaceX).

koolba··on Docker is weird
> The only time it flirts with complexity is multi-stage Dockerfiles, but 90%+ of Dockerfiles are a single stage.

And multi stage builds are just a directed graph short hand for having separate intermediate dockerfiles. There’s nothing special about them either.

If I had to pick one thing that is tricky for someone new to docker to understand, it’s how the filesystem state is cached using the previous state, the env, and the raw command text.

koolba··on Speeding up code review with `small-change`
It can be even more lines as long as the hunks are continuous. Once you lose the context of change and have to “zoom out” to see where it fits in, the review time grows significantly.

> Don't be curmudgeonly. Thoughtful criticism is fine, but please don't be rigidly or generically negative.

Seriously. How often do we get a story that intersects power generation and volcanos?

I read, or at least lightly skim through, the article I post about. But always post whatever comes to mind, regardless of how it will come across.

koolba··on Startup taps underwater volcano as energy source in “proof point” test
I’ve been expecting Oracle to do this. It’d solve their current data center power problem. And it gives a place for Ellison to have video calls with the UN.
koolba··on Nvidia announces plug and play Vera Rubin racks that can be shipped on a truck
> Nvidia announced Wednesday a new product that will put seven of its Vera Rubin AI racks into a shipping container, the company’s latest effort to move up the stack and offer complete systems for artificial intelligence computing.

> Nvidia did not announce a price for the system, but analysts say a single Vera Rubin rack can cost more than $7 million.

So around $50 million in one shipping container. I bet they put more than an air tag to track those on the move.

koolba··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
There’s plenty of delicious vegetarian dishes. I’m not a fan of the ones that try to be meat dishes replaced with vegetables or anything processed to pretend to be meat.

Vegetables are delicious on their own. There’s thousands of years of cultures around the world making vegetables taste wonderful.

koolba··on Eight Bits of Trust; eMudhra's CA keys cracked in milliseconds

koolba··on Zuckerberg's Meta Takes Down No Kings Instagram During Protest Day
Run the full range. From, “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” all the way to “10K to whoever takes out heimdall”.
koolba··on Zuckerberg's Meta Takes Down No Kings Instagram During Protest Day
> I don't view words as violent action, people can say whatever they want.

Where does that put someone calling out a public hit? It is just words after all.

> I could care less if someone wants to say they're going to hurt me. My beef is when they actually try to do it.

They say there’s no atheists in foxholes.

koolba··on Zuckerberg's Meta Takes Down No Kings Instagram During Protest Day
> According to the organizers, Meta failed to respond to their team for approximately 90 minutes while the account was offline during the peak of their national day of action and livestream.

Is it really that unusual to contact a large tech company and not get a response for (egad!) 90 minutes?

koolba··on Tsc-ts: TypeScript written in TypeScript
> An experimental TypeScript port of the TypeScript 7.0.2 compiler (TypeScript-Go, or tsgo), compiled to native code with scriptc.

I don’t get it. Isn’t the golang version already native?

Or is this one of those things where it’s not supposed to make sense?

koolba··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks

Why would he be watching the Bruins and not the Devils?

koolba··on How the Claude Code team does code review
> Low - Docs, copy, internal-only features, additive changes behind a flag

> None required once automated review and security checks are green

How anybody can let an LLM write docs and not even read them is pure insanity.

koolba··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
> I went to a dentist in one of the new dental clinic "chains" that recently opened at my place, regarding some pain in the jaw, and they suggested to pull out a molar, and if the pain does not disappear, then suggested to take an X-ray.

The dentist suggested pulling out the tooth first and then doing an x-ray?

koolba··on CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY)
> Convenient how it doesn't also include housing cost increases …

It does, but only urban renting. It doesn’t measure increases in housing costs for suburbs directly. In particular it does not track increases in home values or mortgage payments for new buyers based on current rates.

koolba··on Thunderbird for iOS
Vertical tabs are only better because there is more horizontally space on a as screen and listing things vertical allows you to both gauge the list size and keep a mental reference of what slot a tab was. And those tab headers don’t move because of resizing when the width fills up.

But horizontal tabs are still better. Not technically better or ascetically better. Some other immeasurable, indescribable better.

koolba··on Firefox Enterprise
Hell yah. This is exactly the type of thing they need to do to take their mouths off the teats of advertising companies like Google.

Make privacy at the enterprise level the first class feature.

Too bad people won’t pay for any of this.

koolba··on An hour of audio transcribed in about 13s on MacBook Air
Too bad the errors for things like this are not truly independent.

Otherwise could run two passes to get down to .25% or three passes to .0125%. Or four passes to .000625%!

That’d be .02 seconds of error per hour!

koolba··on The Case for Firing Squads
