koolk3ychain··on Rust library for end-to-end encrypted, mutually authenticated communication
Very cool in 2021 to see rust and elixir as the first two supported languages :)
koolk3ychain··on Police say they found mafia fugitive on YouTube, posting cooking tutorials
Humanity needs the source of this youtube channel. Italian cuisine depends on this. This is a very serious matter.
koolk3ychain··on It's time to build: a New World's Fair
Yeah no, we should use this money to fund energy research. Trying to woo idiots is a stupid game already won by youtube, online advertising and TikTok.
koolk3ychain··on Receiving SpaceX Falcon 9 Telemetry with a HackRF and 1.2m Satellite Dish
I wonder if this telemetry is also unencrypted for launches carrying sensitive government payloads? Very cool stuff though, rtl-sdr.com has been a great source of entertainment for many years!
koolk3ychain··on USPS Selects Oshkosh Defense for Next Generation Delivery Vehicle Fleet
Darn, this stock would've been a great buy in Nov and I watched a youtube video from an automotive channel in January that went into quite a bit of depth regarding the post office vehicle trials and their opinion that Oshkosh would get the contract!

koolk3ychain··on Czech gunmaker CZG buys Colt in cash and stock deal
This is likely a move so they can continue to either a) import firearms from outside of the US for sale or b) to gain traction and tooling to produce CZ products domestically in the case that the Biden Admin actually gets some form of "assault weapon" ban passed. It's important to note, they'll include pistols that hold more than 15 rounds as "assault weapons".
koolk3ychain··on A Poetic Apology: Or Why Should You Use Poetry to Manage Python Dependencies
I still use pipenv and it's great. Python version management is a hell hole when sharing a project with other devs, pipenv solves this issue and is easy enough to containerize.
koolk3ychain··on Evidence that the FBI can hack into private Signal messages on a locked iPhone
This is why I keep a "universal hammer" at my desk. If the gov boys walk in all I have to do is use it on my phone / laptop.

Problem solved.

Thinking about upgrading to a small commercial grade shredder or microwave.

koolk3ychain··on Ask HN: Team fun event ideas during WFH?
As someone who used to like team happy hours / events when we had offices - team "events" via zoom are weird and awkward. I spend so much of my time at home working, that the last thing I want to do in my free time is pretend to want to talk to my co-workers.
koolk3ychain··on Tracking My Water Intake with NFC Tags
This is awesome! Anyone know of an alibaba source for thermal labels with embedded NFC radio tags?
koolk3ychain··on SEC reportedly probing whether fraudulent social media posts boosted GameStop
I'm going to assume in good faith you understand what satire is.
koolk3ychain··on SEC reportedly probing whether fraudulent social media posts boosted GameStop
SEC reportedly probing whether fraudulent media posts were actively supporting the interests of huge hedge funds. Oh wait...
koolk3ychain··on IBM has cut its blockchain team down to almost nothing – sources
If there was ever an answer to the question of "is there commercial or enterprise value in blockchain technology" this is the indicator of all indicators. Hyperledger / Corda were always shit, but this really takes the cake.

Even as someone who loves ethereum and has been active in the community since the early days - I still maintain that the technology, other than distributed DNS and the advent of IPFS (not in itself a blockchain technology) are the only productive real products of current blockchain "tech".

If you meet someone at a party (god forbid we have those anymore) and they espouse the "value" of blockchain, please immediately move on and ignore them.

koolk3ychain··on Asdf – An Extendable Version Manager
Asdf is fantastic for forcing versions of elixir, especially since no native version control exists for the elixir vm itself. Tools like this are developer friendly and also easy to introduce and share - I've had nothing but fantastic experiences with Asdf.
koolk3ychain··on Ask HN: To techdriven founders/startups – pains and fears in accounting/tax?
Calculating how much sales tax to collect (when building internal ecommerce payment processing) and figuring out how to report "transient" cashflow (for instance payouts to vendors who sell on a platform) on taxes while not counting it as income.

Figuring out how to file taxes for a small team incorperated as an LLC is also a bit daunting, especially when all team members are in different states working remote.

koolk3ychain··on I moved my family from California to Austin, Texas, and regretted it
Thank you kind soul
koolk3ychain··on Tell HN: Someone seems to be trying to make people more fearful through YouTube
I strongly believe that in the next four to five years a majority of the content on the platform will be machine generated. It's fascinating how many military weapons history / "news" channels are almost 100% voiced by machines and placed over public domain gov't produced video of the navy / airforce [0].

Always very interesting to see the kinds of audio / video dithering used to defeat the YouTube algorithm!

koolk3ychain··on The nihilism of r/wallstreetbets
Albeit, it's incredibly entertaining - however anyone who things any of it is "real information" who doesn't have pre-existing professional experience is a moron. Unless you're already a professional I highly doubt anyone can cut through the noise to signal ratio.
koolk3ychain··on The nihilism of r/wallstreetbets
I don't understand why people think /r/wallstreetbets is really that interesting or provides insight into actual wall street? Anyone who knows anything about actual options trading / building strategies knows these people are idiots. Sure, there's a lot of money flowing around - but most people don't realize that to many $60k is pocket change.
koolk3ychain··on Czech trainers teach dogs to sniff out Covid: 95-percent success rate
In many states, a dog indicating is used as the threshold of probable cause.
koolk3ychain··on Czech trainers teach dogs to sniff out Covid: 95-percent success rate
As cool as this development is, I can't help but think about how this could be grossly abused and used as another means of detaining or abusing certain populations state or federal gov might not like. "Pointing", or the provable technique of eliciting a "positive" detection response from a detection animal, has long been a huge point of contention for use of drug dogs during traffic stops - especially in California and Illinois. A huge proportion of these stops also involved the use of "pointing" drug dogs to lead to egregious 4th amendment violations.

koolk3ychain··on How hard should I push myself?
Pushing myself during covid has been a somewhat frivolous and failed effort. Sure, I managed to stand up a handful of small "test" side projects, two of which are now small businesses - however I actually struggled more to immediately apply myself at my day job while working remote.

I know the immediate comments will be - focus on your job not side projects, this is obviously why you struggled to buckle down on "actual work". However, I would say that my day to day work gives me more stress and "pushing myself" just lead to further meetings and stress being more involved with other people's problems.

Like a few other commenters here I received an ADHD diagnosis in my early twenties - for this reason college was a significant challenge. My deepest moments of "pushing myself" have come from trying to escape situations or life circumstances that make me deeply unhappy. Supposedly, ADHD sufferers commonly focus anxiety like this - however, this is certainly my vice. Being able to gauge risk and make hard decisions with this anxiety is great - but it comes at a huge personal and social cost.

koolk3ychain··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Hey, would you be open to selling the front end code you've used to stand up your course? Very curious of your billing backend as well!
koolk3ychain··on Futuristic Helmet Has Its Own HEPA Filter and Fan
I still can't fathom why people would risk a deadly respiratory illness to save... a beard. I broke out laughing when I was reading a 3m respirator review on Amazon from someone with a beard that was verbatim "works great with thick beard, just have to spread half a tub of vaseline on my face to achieve near air-tight seal".

The people making these products are grifters, and bad grifters at that being this late in the game.

koolk3ychain··on Futuristic Helmet Has Its Own HEPA Filter and Fan
What kind of idiot would actually wear this - other than the finance bros this is intentionally marketed towards?
koolk3ychain··on QuantMath: Financial maths library for risk-neutral pricing and risk in Rust
Wow, thanks for putting this together!
koolk3ychain··on QuantMath: Financial maths library for risk-neutral pricing and risk in Rust
What kind of maths are these libraries based on? Always been curious how math is used in finance to build investment strategies / gauge risk.
koolk3ychain··on Small modular nuclear reactors may help polluting industries reduce emissions
That said, all of these reactors have been on platforms surrounded by water and are occupied by hundreds if not thousands of trained (some highly trained) crew 24/7. It goes without saying that many of those crew are also armed or directly tasked with ensuring nobody can tamper with the nuclear power source / any part of the platform. I should also add a very good friend of mine is a nuclear engineer who works on submarines.

I'm not sure it's even fair to compare the operational discrepancies of something as simple as a test / training reactor to a nuclear heat source at a concrete plant?

koolk3ychain··on Twitter shuts down account of Sci-Hub
I hate that I have to preface this, but I'm a democrat who voted for Biden and doesn't question the outcome of the election. That said, our society does not need this kind of gerrymandering in our online discourse. People need to forget politics for a second and realize the true harm companies like this are inflicting by effectively playing god.
