kotrunga··on Apple’s Mistake (2009)
I'm a developer, but just to play devil's advocate... think about the end user. Having a review process (though, Apple can improve theirs, see below) helps protect the end user. Programmers, companies, etc. can't just repeatedly push updates non-stop, starting with half-baked apps, iterating too quickly. How do you have a check process that ensures an app is up to standard and "safe"? In addition, the time cost to release adds value to a release, hopefully helping it be more thought out, bringing more value to the user.

Again though... I think the point is that Apple could have a better review process that A) values the developer more and B) shouldn't take as long. I agree with that.

Nice.

Do you have any sites that support the flow yet?

Your game looks like a lot of fun, and the concept is really cool. Would you mind telling us more about your process and the technical aspects?
kotrunga··on Are daily standups hurting your team?
Woah- this is my first time seeing a Jocko quote on HN. Nice!

And it makes sense- even if the team is "objectively bad", a good leader will help transform them.

Why was this downvoted? sneak brings up good points.

kotrunga··on Ask HN: Is Signal Down?
The desktop experience, at least for me, has been amazing. Very fast and clean.

The download times for messages / etc have been MUCH slower recently. I’m thinking it’s because of the load they are experiencing. As more people donate and as they scale for the load I imagine (and hope) it might even be faster than it was before.

I was using fish, wasn't working there either. thanks :)

Dumb question but I'm getting 404 errors with the wget command (but the urls work fine in the browser). Any advice?

What is this Wikipedia "Deletion Police"? I haven't heard of quality content being consistently deleted.

Regardless of how great the stuff in the repo is (I'll check it out)... this is amazing:

kotrunga··on Privacy Not Included
To a normal internet user, they make it look like they endorse the product.

The 'meets our minimum security standards' seal is still next to the product.

kotrunga··on Privacy Not Included
What is Mozilla doing? They are endorsing the 'Google Home'? The 'Ring Doorbell'? Products from Nest? I guess it makes sense, with the amount of money they get from Google- they have to.

While these devices might have encryption, security updates, etc, many of the devices listed ABUSE user privacy. Many of the devices here ARE creepy!

I could provide 10 links as proof, but it's not even worth the time. You can go ahead and 'Google' the proof.

This is horrible.

kotrunga··on For 40 Years, This Russian Family Was Cut Off from All Human Contact (2013)
Wow... this was an incredible read, thank you for sharing.

I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up in that environment.

Humans are amazing... one of my favorite lines from the article:

The family’s principal entertainment, the Russian journalist Vasily Peskov noted, “was for everyone to recount their dreams.”

exactly.
kotrunga··on Show HN: I made a site that aggregates entry-level positions
Exactly. Which is definitely not needed for a job aggregation site.

This is a great site, and I really like what they are doing and going towards. I just don't like how it's littered with Google trackers, etc.

kotrunga··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
Just a little sad to see how much value they put into the iPhone and services while iPad and Mac software is lacking. Obviously, they're making money, and that's their goal. However, I think sales could be boosted for the iPads and Macs if they increased the quality of the software for those devices.

kotrunga··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
I use Firefox every day, I like Rust, and I like what Mozilla stands for. The hard thing is... I'm pretty sure a significant portion of their revenue comes from Google, which is ironic.
