koyote··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
Which really reveals how far we still have to go as a society when trivial things such as the above are taboo.
koyote··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
You don't need an antenna. You can think of an antenna as simply being a signal booster.

That being said, without an antenna it is highly improbable that it could still find an open WiFi AP to connect to (especially if you don't have one in your house).

koyote··on Ghostty 1.4
Yep, same here but with xfce4-terminal.

I've just reverted back to using that as it's faster to load and has all the features I need.

koyote··on New iPad mini
I don't think that's a good comparison.

I've often had new phones that are 'faster' but I barely notice the fastness until I go back to my old phone and realise that my finger-memory needs adapting because things take just a bit longer to load.

I'd assume it's similar for screen refresh rates.

koyote··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
Microsoft has abandoned Azure Devops so we've had to move to Github for any 'new' (read AI) features.

Github is so bad I don't even know where to start. It's fine for small personal projects and the odd project with a few collaborators. But it's just not built for managing large software projects. Even the PR process is awful compared to Azure Devops (and Azure Devops was, in my opinion, ok bordering on good). Diffs are somehow worse than any tool I've ever used.

I am now questioning what Microsoft has been doing all these years they've owned it.

koyote··on Quad9 to exit France
> Does the fact I have written this resolver make me liable should it not block the domains they listed which may contain copyright infringing content?

I use unbound and have a similar question. Shouldn't we just encourage everyone to run their own resolvers (it's turnkey for the most part!)? Will Sony/beIn start going after the root servers and enforce a global block?

koyote··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
This is the only way to work with AI and ensure your code is still (somewhat) maintainable in a year+.

Anyone who's ever directed AI at a very large legacy code base will have noticed that AI just gets dumber and slower the worse (larger + inconsistent) the code base gets (just like us humans do). The big difference is that with AI you can get to the point where the code base is an unmaintainable legacy mess in a fraction of the time that it used to take. Directing architecture is the only way to mitigate this to some extent.

koyote··on Gemini 4 Argon
Definitely agree. Sol 5.6 was great when it was released and for nearly a month.

Since then they cut the price but the intelligence (of 6 and 6.1) has gone down to Sonnet 4 levels. I am back in a world where the model is lazy, cuts corners, ignores existing coding standards and context, makes stupid mistakes etc.

I am not sure how those models still rank so high in benchmarks when real-life usage is so obviously bad.

koyote··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I have a similar amount running on a 16GB NUC in proxmox LXCs and it usually sits at less than half memory usage.

The only big memory guzzlers are generally proprietary software, like the unifi network controller software which basically requires an entire room of Cray supercomputers just to view your Wifi AP status.

koyote··on OpenAI annualised revenues $20B less than previously signalled
Do you have any insight into how your management tracks the value it is providing?

This is something we've been trying to do for a while now and have not found a convincing metric.

koyote··on Visa, Mastercard, major banks facing new litigation over 'anticompetitive' fees
I have only once in my life had to request a chargeback for some random charge I had never initiated.

Where do you live or shop that you are happy to take what is effectively a 3% pay cut for the privilege of having a slightly easier option to get your money back if someone charges you the wrong amount?

koyote··on Tapo (Rust/Python library) now speaks TP-Link's TPAP protocol
Great work!

I assume because it has Python wrapper, the HomeAsstant integration can make use of it soon?

koyote··on Two American Airlines Flights End Up with the Same Flight Numbers
The US is really weird with flight numbers and I don't think any other country in the world does it the same way.

You often get flights sharing the same flight numbers such as JFK-SLC and SLC-SFO being the same flight number, even if it's a completely different plane doing the route!

Also super confusing when trying to search for your (or a loved one's) flight online as you'll get multiple matches.

koyote··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I think the fact that Sol 6 appeared higher than Sonnet 4 on benchmarks shows that benchmarks are completely rubbish and useless.

I've never seen such a large degradation in intelligence in a model until I tried out Sol 6 after having used 5.6 almost exclusively for several weeks.

koyote··on Ember-1
I am glad I am not the only one to notice. I feel like I've gone back to Sonnet 4 levels of incompetence!

With Sol 6 I am back in a world where the model writes bad code because it is lazy ("You're absolutely right, I did not [do it properly] because I did not want to edit [a normal amount of files]").

koyote··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
And yet they have only improved marginally in my use cases since around Opus 4.5.

The harnesses have improved somewhat, but the code produced on large or legacy code bases is still very average and I still see similar mistakes made that I saw back a year ago (although less now that harnesses have become better at steering).

For my use cases, we are definitely on the flatter part of the curve at the moment.

koyote··on I added a non-wi-fi Mitsubishi AC to Home Assistant
The non-ducted systems will usually have an IR remote. You can buy devices to blast IR at it and HA has good support for that. This is what I use.
koyote··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
> even before LLMs could spot my bugs in an instant

I guess it depends on the bugs.

LLMs even INSIDE the (VS) debugger couldn't work out some of the more recent bugs I have been looking at. Never mind by statically looking at the code base.

koyote··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I too have been burned by the BBOC, although not as badly as this:

I picked out a random short ethernet cable that looked nice (it was flat) to connect my wifi AP to my router.

It took me about a month to realize my 100mbit internet connection had dropped down to about ~85-90mbit, but more importantly, transferring files between a wifi client and the wired network was also only ~90mbit.

Turned out the cable was so bad that it only connected at 100mbit...

I have now gone the other way and I actually curate the BBOC: All cables I get for 'free' with random appliances now go straight to the bin (unless they are specialised) and I only keep cables I specifically bought and know they adhere to a standard.

koyote··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
So at 2am you would have thousands of cars driving around empty?

Or would you still need a giant spot of land to park these things outside of peak hour?

koyote··on iPhone Duo
Celsius is not really related to the metric system. It's just a temperature scale the entire world (minus the US) agreed to use.
koyote··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
It basically makes it impossible to have it build a very large feature incrementally.

I am currently building a very large feature and the only way to do this properly is to do it in small steps.

No matter what I prompt, I always have to spend a bunch of time reigning it in during planning (and implementation!) because it tries to solve the whole thing end-to-end or add enough boilerplate so that a code path (that is still under construction) returns a meaningful (but wrong) value.

And then of course every time I start a new session it gets very upset that the feature I am trying to implement will never work because the main user entry point has a 'not fully implemented' exception that definitely needs to be removed immediately!

koyote··on Apple Watch Series 12
The garmin has so much battery life that when it's at 10% and starts complaining that the battery is close to dying I still have about 2 days to remember to charge it.

And obviously you don't get penalised for charging it more often. Just charge it every Sunday if routine is a big issue.

koyote··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Surely it shouldn't be to difficult to come up with a sort of plugin-type approach like I've seen in various 'comments' sections on existing websites:

Simply embed the 'update' feed on a page in the existing website and have some kind of admin panel where employees can easily CRUD some updates.

I guess because even this would not be 'free', twitter ends up winning.

koyote··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
It almost seems like we need laws that information about public services have to be available on a public website (as opposed to a third-party website that requires registration).

I personally do not know anyone in real life with a twitter account (although I have one, I have not used it in over 15 years), I wonder how many people just go without this information and are angry that it's (seemingly) not available.

koyote··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Definitely slower to use a card or your phone in London.

I remember when they first allowed card use more than a decade ago and it broke the flow quite a bit at rush hour as people were so used to the Oyster card's timing that they'd run into the back of people using cards or people using cards would run into the gate as it had not opened as quickly as they were used to. Quite a bit of commentary around it during that time:

koyote··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
One of the many reasons I moved away from ipods is because iTunes (which was awful; some of the worst software I've used) did the same thing to me just before I went on a trip.

I thought to myself: "I better add these two new albums to my ipod so that I can listen to them while away". I plug in the ipod, itunes loads up, I walk away. I come back 10 minutes later and it had not finished yet and I wonder what is going on. Turns out it deleted my entire 40gb library off my ipod and started re-syncing. I had to leave so I unplugged the ipod but it was basically useless at that point.

I do agree with Microsoft in general but Apple seems to be very much the same in my experience.

koyote··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
It's not just claude, all AI is unable to produce something concise. On the surface everything looks 'good' whether code or prose, but then if you dig a bit, try and understand the whole text you quickly realise that 80% of it is unecessary and the whole thing could have been re-worded/re-coded into something a fraction of its size and complexity.

I asked Sol to reduce the length of some documentation we had by making it more concise. It came back after 20 minutes of work, did a line count and was aghast that the line count had somehow increased...

koyote··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Early 90s maybe. By the end of the 90s and definitely early 2000s CRT screens were 1024×768 for the cheap crap and 1600×1200 for the high-end (with 1280×1024 as a mid-range).
