kreeben··on List of individual trees
Why is Pippi Longstocking's "soda pop tree" not on the list? It's dying and the whole of Sweden are freaking out. We're putting tax payer money on solving its disease. We're developing a vaccine to try and save it for gods sake. Yes, this is a very LOL type of situation to the rest of the world, I know that. But it's not a laughing matter in Sweden: https://www.slu.se/nyheter/2025/11/pippis-sockerdrickstrad-r...
kreeben··on 65% of Hacker News posts have negative sentiment, and they outperform
You just issued a complaint and that's a fact. In the context of "complaints are bad, m'kay" how do you feel about this?
kreeben··on Language model search built on vector database and anything key/value store
Vector space search engine, vector database and an anything key/value store. Powers efficient string processing, vector operations, and custom storage primitives designed for speed and simplicity. Can produce large language models out of strings and large anything models out of byte arrays.
kreeben··on Building websites with lots of little HTML pages
Netscape's too big to fail, yo.
kreeben··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
We're at peak ape technology but at this point in time for some reason we turn to a specific ape, not a smart one but an ape who feels he should rule the world, and is on the doorstep to world domination, one that feels entitled to this amount of power, and we ask him to do "the right thing"?

America, don't be the next force the rest of the world needs to fight. Wake the fuck up.

kreeben··on The Rise of Malört, an Unexpected Midwest princess
In Sweden it goes

1. eat rotten herring (which you'll not enjoy, because it's rotten fish, yo)

2. clean your palette with a disgusting shot of home made malört spirits (or aquavit, equally disgusting)

3. goto 1 until your drunk

4. get laid

Very, very, very few people ever reaches step 4.

kreeben··on Microsoft says 8.5M Windows devices were affected by CrowdStrike outage
From your linked piece:

"CrowdStrike has helped us develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix"

What if I told you that such Mag7 speak is not to be trusted, at all, even?

kreeben··on Detecting hallucinations in large language models using semantic entropy
Your linked paper suffers from the same anthropomorphisation as does all papers who uses the word "hallucination".
kreeben··on This Message Does Not Exist

Server: WTAF are you trying to do, here, man?

Message: Hi everybody!

kreeben··on Show HN: I built a backend so simple that it fits in a YAML file
Out of spite and because I could, I deleted all the text in the noyaml site and then clicked "save". Sorry if you were too slow to read it. Might find it in the waybackmachine?
kreeben··on Show HN: Wadzilla. Play DOOM in Zork
Sir, Facebook is over there [points west]. This is HN.
kreeben··on Feynman's Garden
Well said about not realizing it's important therefore names get down prioritized. Here's a counter point. I'm a movie geek. Yet when I reach for a name of someone from the cast I almost always end up describing, y'know, that guy who played together with that other guy in that movie, y'know, the one with the weird story line? Him! Yes, him. Love him.
kreeben··on Llama3 implemented from scratch
Don't torment the hobbits! Send the eagles right away!
kreeben··on The United States of Avocado
Heightened levels of intelligence due to avocado should already be noticable. What's he built with LEGO, so far?
kreeben··on The man who killed Google Search?
word2vec, invented by Google, killed Google?

I mean, it would serve as a terrific headline but I don't really buy it, do you?

I think it's more "Very poor search results, infested with ads, killed Google's dreams of becoming the next Microsoft and will now die a slow death and end up making millions instead of billions".

Dying might not be that bad, after all.

kreeben··on Voyager-1 sends readable data again from deep space
"The issue was resolved by shifting the affected code to different locations in the memory of the probe's computers."

Super human programmers doing super human things. Or, can we find a better link that describes what they did, so that those of us who are merely 10x rockstar programmer saviors don't have to realize we're really not as good as we think?

kreeben··on The killer app of Gemini Pro 1.5 is using video as an input
Clippy, definition: bot created by mega corp.

Clippy + high IQ: red flag, right here

Clippy + high IQ + intimate knowledge of you: do you seriously want that? Why?

kreeben··on Relativistic Spaceship
>> baseball

How large is one of those, even? I much prefer to work with perfectly spherical Olympic swimming pools.

kreeben··on The EPA is proposing that 'forever chemicals' be considered hazardous substances
I don't follow. Are you saying we should hold off laws that deem e.g. teflon toxic, until there's teflon everywhere?

The government: There's almost no teflon in the ground, so that's good.

The market: Hold my beer.

kreeben··on How to do things if you're not that smart and don't have any talent
I thought he once said "anyone can become a chef" but after Googling I realize I might have a false memory. Was it another famous chef who said it? Sry.
kreeben··on How to do things if you're not that smart and don't have any talent
I like AnotherGoodName's advise, a lot. But as you say, it will hit a nerve only with people who already have some confidence in their abilities so if they hit a wall, instead of giving up, they say to themselves that "oh, I guess I just need to learn even more things" and then do. A person with low confidence in their abilities will probably say "oh, I'm not smart enough".

When it comes to this and most other trades, I'm with Gordon Ramsey. Anyone can become a good programmer. "Smartness" and "intelligence", they are such ill-defined concepts. I'm not sure I believe they are real things.

kreeben··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
Daniel from "mid-western Germany", very nice to have virtually met you. I'm "the guy from southern Sweden".

Pretty darn cool service, this. Thx so much to the creator for showing this to HN.

Never thought I'd do a Omegle-like encounter with anyone. But here I am having done it and feeling quite enriched by the experience :D

kreeben··on An eruption has begun north of Grindavík
One house already on fire. That whole neighborhood seems pretty screwed.
kreeben··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
I realized it months ago, years even and then I remembered an insight from decades ago.

Boeing bad, mkay. Always has been.

kreeben··on www.google.com – The page is blank when accessed

kreeben··on Differences Between NT Server and Workstation Are Minimal (1996)
>> Only two registry settings

Could the bullet time I experienced when I installed Max Payne on Windows 2000 Server been even more bullet timlyer, simply through a reg tweak? Where was this information, three thousand years ago, when I needed it?

BTW, Windows 2000 Server, the most rock solidest OS I've ever used.

kreeben··on Windows 12: Savior of PC makers, or just an apology for Windows 11?
>> fully uninstall Cortana

>> disable the extra sneaky telemetry and privacy nightmares

Does that require a rinse and repeat at every monthly Windows Update?

kreeben··on Windows 12: Savior of PC makers, or just an apology for Windows 11?
I love this meme. It's one of my favorites. But Win10 was actually a turd and Win11 was a polished turd with a stinky one of an ad-on: more ads and more fingerprinting.

I xpect Win12 to be more turd and Win13 to be diarrhea.
